I can't imagine that I'm the only person on the forum that thinks faking hate crimes should carry a penalty equal to being convicted of a hatecrime, just as false rape allegations should be punishable by the same metric.

Arguably falsifying hate crimes should actually be punished even more harshly still, because while a fake rape allegation can destroy a single life a fake hate-crime allegation tears at the fabric of the entire nation.

Years ago, we had a news story in the American northeast where a police officer stabbed himself. He claimed he had been attacked by two black males, but it quickly became apparent that his life was falling apart and that he was trying to collect his retirement benefits.

He was acquitted in local court, but convicted of numerous counts of postal fraud at the federal level for sending the paperwork through the mail. He got a few years in federal prison and was slapped for $90,000 in restitution, the value of the benefits he received.

In the United States, criminal restitution can't be cleared in bankruptcy. It seems to me that if prosecutors started could make proven false accusers repay the costs of the investigations they demanded, quite a bit of this would dry up.

This link is a great find. But you left out the best part. The second half of the headline says: "Was Filmed in Lobby After ‘Attack” Appearing Normal."

The story goes on to say:
Jessie Smollett said he was assaulted and suffered a cracked rib but condo surveillance video shows Smollett walking past security to the elevator. Without telling them he had just been attacked by thugs who “beat the hell out of him” and “broke his ribs.”

He then said he was "talking to his manager" during the assault but won't turn over his phone. His manager is saying he overheard the assault and this is why cops want the phone -- to see if he was really talking to his manager.

I agree that you avoid cops whenever possible. "Getting involved" = asking for trouble, since the job of cops and prosecutors seems to be to put as many men behind bars as possible, whatever the reason.

But...if you're the one that goes to the police to begin with and they spend days doing a manhunt, perhaps it's then incumbent upon you to help them out. You already got involved by that point.

Crazy Conspiracy Theory

He could be the real anti-black racist.

Perhaps this guy was given a rough time by other black people for being gay while he was growing up and he now hates black people so he is using this hoax to exhaust police resources and distract away from the real crimes perpetrated against black people in Chicago by other black people every day. The more populous and black the city is, the greater the impact of his actions. So Chicago would be a natural choice, especially given the daily frequency of crime, if he wanted to inflict the maximum amount of damage on the largest number of people in the least amount of time.

Every day that he can keep the police and the public focused on him is a day that a dozen murders go unsolved and maybe even that a few crimes which would not have been committed are because the police are being distracted by him. Maybe his goal is to endanger and deprive of justice as many black people as he can, which is why he chose Chicago, one of the blackest and most populous cities in the country, for the staging of his fake hate crime. Maybe he is even using his manager, who thinks it is just a publicity stunt to promote Empire and is unaware of the true motive behind it.

There is actually a precedent for this kind of "publicity." It didn't work, but there is a precedent.

Back in 1989, a New York-based talk show host named Morton Downey, Jr. claimed he was attacked by "skinheads" in an airport bathroom. Downey was a confrontational show host who constantly got in his guests' faces, so this seemed believable. At first. When cops looked into it, it fell apart.

Eventually the consensus was that Downey faked the attack so he'd have an excuse to get dentures, because his teeth were gross from all the chain smoking he did on the show (he later died of lung cancer).

Here is a link, for anyone who wants to explore this odd rabbit hole. Along with Trump, Howard Stern, and the Beastie Boys, Downey was one of the quintessential New York characters of the '80s.
