RE: The Canada Political Thread
I almost spit my coffee out reading this on the CBC this morning: P.E.I. farmer apologizes in local paper for calling agriculture minister 'an arsehole'
Quote:Ranald MacFarlane has apologized for calling the federal agriculture minister an "arsehole" during a farmer protest.

Lawrence MacAulay, a P.E.I. MP, was in Pooles Corner on Friday to make a federal spending announcement when he came face to face with a protest by local farmers upset about Canada's new trade deal with the U.S.

"A hundred of us landed there with pickup trucks and a cow and protest signs — and it's not like farmers here to pick up protest signs, but they did," MacFarlane, a pig and dairy farmer from Fernwood, P.E.I., told As It Happens host Carol Off.

He said four young farmers at the protest planned to read "victim impact statements" to the minister detailing how the new deal would affect their future livelihoods — but MacAulay refused to stay and listen.

"Eventually Lawrence was leaving — my voice has a tendency to carry for some reason — and Lawrence turned and looked at me and I looked at him and I said, 'You're an areshole, Lawrence,'" MacFarlane said.

"He heard it. I know he heard it. He looked at me. He looked sour."

Interestingly enough it seems that tradthot Faith Goldy was not only shut out of the debates, but prohibited from Advertising on Main Stream Media.

The judge is obviously a fag. The national post, which is our least left major newspaper threw in some verbiage that was a little over the top, basically calling her a nazi.

Not good news for Free Press in Canada.

Canada is a very democratic country, so long as you vote for the status quo. Orwell suits Canada perfectly, "Everyone is equal, some are just more equal than others".

Goldy has a good chance of coming in third in this race. Otherwise the media would let her do her thing, but Toronto can only handle a race between: Left, Left of left, and centre-left. Anything else raises the red flags in our media, and they shut it down.

^^ refusing to interview with Rebel was maybe Scheers' most cuck move. Or more accurately, refusing them access to cover conservative convention. How are they less legit than CBC in their outlook, I don't get it.

Taken from Wikipedia....re: CBC "Canadian broadcasting corporation.

The 1991 Broadcasting Act[14] states that...

...the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, as the national public broadcaster, should provide radio and television services incorporating a wide range of programming that informs, enlightens and entertains;

...the programming provided by the Corporation should:

be predominantly and distinctively Canadian,
reflect Canada and its regions to national and regional audiences, while serving the special needs of those regions,
actively contribute to the flow and exchange of cultural expression,
be in English and in French, reflecting the different needs and circumstances of each official language community, including the particular needs and circumstances of English and French linguistic minorities,
strive to be of equivalent quality in English and French,
contribute to shared national consciousness and identity,
be made available throughout Canada by the most appropriate and efficient means and as resources become available for the purpose, and
reflect the multicultural and multiracial nature of Canada.

Wide range of programming stuck out for me.

You don't have to agree with everything or anything they say. In fact I find most of their personalities unwatchable, but they are the only media outlet in Canada that will call out the government, and the only media outlet that gives a rat's ass about free speech.

RE: The Canada Political Thread
I can’t think of a single Rebel media host who I enjoy watching, they’re all cringe worthy. I have a lot of respect for Ezra Levant and have been reading and watching his stuff for over a decade, back when he published the Western Standard magazine and Shotgun blog. When him and Mark Steyn won a court case against Muslim lawyers who tried to sue them for Islamophobia or some other nonsense, it was a huge win. I actually met Levant and Sheila Reid at the Conservative convention in Halifax last August and they were very nice. All the same, these people have no main stream appeal, they seem cranky and are definitely not cool. Same with Andrew Scheer, the guy is a lame dork with the personality of a baked potato.

I don’t understand why we can’t have cool conservatives in Canada, we need to stop electing these uptight Prairie nerds like Harper, Scheer and Joe Clark. I know Quebec lawyers get a bad rep but guys like Maxime Bernier and Brian Mulroney would be way cooler to have a beer with and are more appealing to low information voters.

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

Harper was, for his part, "cool". He totally rocked the Beatles on the piano better than Clinton blew his sax. However, the Media Party played it down to maintain his cuddly as a porcupine persona.

He was amazing at domestic statescraft because he kept the loony left at bay and the fringe right on a leash.

JT is what we get when the dam breaks.

Unfortunately, Canada does not have a Trump equivalent.

I respect Harper and voted for the guy three times, I bought his new book teo days ago and look forward to reading it. Still, there’s nothing cool about the guy, he managed to get elected after the Sponsorship scandal wrecked the Liberals imagine and left voters looking for someone new. Harper fortuneatly managed to run the country fairly well, which just so happened to coincide with a decade long commodity boom, so he lucked out there.

"Cool" has different facets. As for as I can tell, all the dumb things he did in office were to appease the left and keep power in a minority government and then pave the was for future improvements.

He is higher in my "have a beer with" left than Trudeau (either), Martin or Chretien.

^^ Harper doesn't drink beer, only diet pepsi or something like that.

I got the new Harper book on audio, so pathetic that the national posts only editorial on it by cuckservative Andrew Coyne ripped it.

I read John Ibbotson's biography Harper a few years back, and it gave me insight into Harpers roots. How he finished first in his class in High School, then went to a fancy U of T program with a bunch of blue bloods. Then 3 weeks into September, he drops out goes out west and starts working some shit office job. Just because he didn't like those rich entitled fucks! How many of us know someone who finished first in their class and did that, I liked that anecdote, gives you a sense of what drives the man. Also, he knew his files sometimes better than his own ministers, something Trudeau will never be able to do with his pea brain

The first time I didn't vote for Harper, nor want to, because he "looked like a wiener" (definitely not cool)
The Second time I wanted to vote for him, but didn't, because he was "a weasel" (bought the media coolaid)
The 3rd time I did I vote for him, knew I had been duped previously, and was mad about it.

RE: The Canada Political Thread
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/steel-t...-1.4869440

Quote:A prominent Canadian steel executive told MPs this week that Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland's "ego" is getting in the way of ending American tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

Barry Zekelman, the chairman and CEO of Zekelman Industries, delivered a scathing assessment Thursday of how the Liberal government is handling the tariff fight with the United States, accusing the government of squandering opportunities to resolve the issue months ago.

Zekelman, a Windsor, Ont. native who heads a steel empire that has operations in both Canada and the U.S, was asked by MPs about the impact of tariffs on his Canadian operations.

"They have stalled and blown this big time, and our consumers and our industry in Canada is suffering because of it," Zekelman told MPs on the standing committee on international trade.

"We're waiting for someone's ego. They need to get into a room and get the deal done ... whether Freeland picks up the phone and calls (U.S. Trade Representative) Robert Lighthizer and says here it is ... the deal is available this afternoon."

Zekelman said he was making those claims based on his personal connections with U.S. President Donald Trump's circle; he said he has dined with Trump and has met with Lighthizer. He said he believes the Americans will drop their 25 per cent tariff on steel if Canada agrees to limit its exports into the U.S. through a quota system.

"This can be solved. Literally, I can do it this afternoon," Zekelman said. "How do I know that? I've talked to Mr. Lighthizer myself."

"We could have had that a long time ago. This is the worst negotiating I've seen," Zekelman said as he testified before the committee via video link.

But two senior government sources tell CBC News that Canada is not interested in accepting any sort of quota system on steel or aluminum — and Ottawa has made that clear to the Trump administration.

The quota system

Last June, the administration invoked a rarely used national security provision — Section 232 — to impose 25 per cent tariffs on steel and 10 per cent tariffs on aluminum from multiple countries, including Canada and Mexico.
Both Canada and Mexico responded with reciprocal tariff measures shortly after.

It had been widely expected the tariffs would be lifted upon the successful completion of the NAFTA negotiations. But when all three countries reached an agreement in principle before the October 1 deadline for a new deal — the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) — the U.S. did not remove the tariffs.

"The best outcome for both countries would be for the U.S. to rescind their tariffs," said Adam Austen, a spokesperson for Freeland.

"The unjust and illegal tariffs that the U.S. has imposed under Section 232 are separate and apart from the USMCA negotiations. We have taken strong responsive measures to defend our workers and our industry, including measured, dollar-for-dollar tariffs."

Zekelman's comments came as the parliamentary committee has been taking a closer look at the impact of the tariffs on Canadian businesses and workers.

Over several days of testimony, some business owners have told MPs they have been forced to introduce layoffs or reduce shift work as a result of the tariffs.

Zekelman said that pain could have been avoided had the Canadians just accepted the American quota system.

"They will do reduced shipments, or level shipments, but they will not do increased shipments," Zekelman said of the American negotiators.

An outspoken critic

He also took a personal shot at Freeland over her difficult relationship with Lighthizer.

"He can't stand negotiating with her because she's just not a businessperson. She's way out of her league."

Zekelman has been outspoken on the issue of U.S. tariffs — and even welcomed the idea when it was first floated back in March as a way to crack down on the dumping of cheap steel, mostly from Asia.

"Is that 25 per cent duty enough? I don't think it is and I actually think those duties should be much higher," he told CBC News at the time.

But his previous comments suggested he thought that Canada would get some sort of exemption. "President Trump doesn't view Canada as an enemy," he said at the time.

Can everyone on here sign this?

E-1883 (FIREARMS)

Quote:PETITION TO THE MINISTER OF BORDER SECURITY AND ORGANIZED CRIME REDUCTION

Whereas:
Justin Trudeau has instructed his Border Security and Organized Crime Minister to examine a potential handgun and assault weapon ban;

The safety of Canadians should be the highest responsibility of government;

Whenever Liberal governments attempt to crackdown on gun violence, they usually end up targeting law-abiding firearms owners;

Canadian firearms owners are highly vetted in our country;

The government is focusing its efforts on law-abiding firearm owners while ignoring data on gun-related crimes being correlated with gang activity and illegal weapon smuggling;

The government’s firearms legislation, Bill C-71, does nothing to address actual problems related to gun crime;

Bill C-71 contains no mention of the words “gang” or “organized” crime anywhere; and

The government refuses to admit that most guns used to commit crimes are from illegal sources.

We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction to:

1. Respect law-abiding Canadians who own firearms;

2. Immediately scrap Bill C-71 and introduce legislation that actually targets criminals while protecting Canadians and respecting law-abiding firearms owners; and

3. Abandon the idea of a blanket firearms ban on law-abiding and highly vetted Canadians.

Does anyone feel like taxes in Canada are crazy high? It’s hard to be incentivized to make more when 30-50% of it is going to the government.

Our taxes aren’t that much different than America’s but unlike America we aren’t supporting a large army. We also have a huge oil sector and a ton of natural resources. Why are our taxes so high? Is it all going to First Nations for what we did to their great great grandparents?

And why do they keep adding taxes? It’s like they are playing a game of Jenga as our taxes keep going up. I’ve never seen them go down.

Canada is an expensive country to run. A lot of the remote regions require a lot of government agencies to keep them from starving and freezing. Its 2018, and after generations of this system, no one questions it.

Our dear leaders say they need more government in order to keep this country together. So our own government agencies, from Federal to Civic, are bloated with shitty jobs. Its either this, or welfare they say. From my dealings with civic government, its likely true. Who else is going to hire an overweight, bitter and hateful paper pusher with no skills? So government it is, until they claim full pension at 40 and go on permanent disability for the rest of their days.

Canadians in the Maritimes pay 62% taxes if they make over $110,000 a year. BC is close behind, but in BC there are more people making that money, so if you want work three days a week for free, join the club. BC is a province of mental patients with Stockholm syndrome. The amount of people I hear say, "Well, I am privileged enough to be making this much, so its my duty to help out the poor".

Canadians have about 40% of the wealth that Americans do, if you factor in cost of living, wages, and taxes. If anyone has heard of Yellowknife, a townhouse sells for $1mm and a six pack is $16. Who the fuck in their minds would live in the frozen tundra with this cost of living? Government workers/dependents. Its a great system, as these fools just pay out most of their income right back into the system that keeps them alive.

If you can get rich in Canada, you are a smart and clever individual. Canada is not set up for people to make true wealth. Its designed to stifle this and push the smartest ones into resource industries where you pay $130k a year in taxes.

Taxes are rather messed up. I live in China and at current exchange rates I make only about $40k. However, due to taxes alone that boosts my actual take-home by about 50%. No pogey and I have to do my own retirement planning but fortunately I am fairly healthy so I just pay out of pocket for health care services.

Money-wise, that's about it.

Top 1 % Income in Canada: 227,000CAD (2014) @ 80% x USD = 181,000K
Top 1 % Income in US: 297,000 USD (2018)

Even within this, you can take a look at florida or texas where they have no statel taxes whatsoever and people are making serious money. In Canada, usually your province is killing you running their terrible bureaucratic health care systems, among just about every other program under the sun.

As an accountant, it is my belief the best method for managing your tax burden in Canada is having a CCPC (private corp). Even then it is mostly a deferral mechanism that locks your money up. Doctors, Lawyers, Management get absolutely slammed on their T4s.

Canada is poorer than the poorest US states (Alabama). We are tricked in that we have (1) less dirt poor people so we don't feel poor as a nation - Go into a Walmart in Canada vs. the USA and you see the difference. (2) Less rich people demonstrating true wealth - we don't know we aren't wealthy because few around us are.

When I expatriated, I cut my workload to about 80% of what it was before, and I still more than doubled my income. I'm fairly minimalist, so cost of living doesn't factor in to that (very much). It was 98% taxes.

I recently was back in the country and had a health issue. I was (and still am) deeply troubled with what I considered the substandard medical care. I know it varies by province, and I once recieved very good care in Vancouver, but in many other cities/provinces, I have been left unimpressed. Compared to insured medical care in the US, medical care in Panama, Bermuda, Colombia, and several European countries, Canada does not make the grade.

As to the northern communities that cost so much, agreed. On road infrastructure alone, no other country has to deal with so many roads, stretching for thousands of kilometers, all leading to some northern town with a population less than 2,000. If the government assistance and infrastucture was pulled, most of those people would die within a few weeks.

Why are Canadian residents comfortable with this? I hear what everyone has said, but the thing that always confused me was that Canadians travel. They go to Europe and Asia. They have, undoubtedly, seen far more functional systems with varying degrees of taxation. Yet, they do nothing. It is utter complacency.

Currently out of office.

Just out of curiosity, what Provence/City were you in, and how did you pay for your health issue if you're expatriated? Good information for those of us considering the expat option.
