This sucks. I was never a Bourdain fanboy, but I always enjoyed his books and shows. A few people I know appeared on them over the years.

But my dad was buddies with him and this news will really affect him. The last celebrity suicide to upset my dad was Hunter S. Thompson. They used to be drinking buddies during the days of the Rustic in Glen Ellen.

Very shocking.

That being said, I got the feeling lately that something was off. He was becoming a cheerleader for Asia Argento in her quest against Harvey Weinstein and other "typical" liberal causes, at least on his Twitter account. It came across a bit inauthentic. Lately, his shows were also taking on a certain tone and it was probably network directed. He did an episode on Italy and it seemed like he had to liken Mussolini to Trump. A similar theme on his England Brexit episode.

In simpler terms, to me it seemed that Bourdain had sold out and I think he realized this himself and it probably ate him up inside. He was a puppet promoting a cause instead of simply traveling the world and talking to locals. There are probably a few other factors too (i.e. he was a former hard core drug addict). I scrolled down his timeline and found something about him talking about autoerotic asphyxiation?

A sad ending however, despite his recent political ramblings, I was a huge fan of his since the "A Cook's Tour" days, which I thought was his most genuine, authentic work and the work he loved to do.

Hahah none of us have croaked yet so we don't know what awaits us after it's all over. But yeah the "spydersuit" reply was amusing. My parents are religious but for years I have been sort of the self proclaimed bad boy in my family taking pride in barely embracing any sort of religion although I was raised in the Catholic tradition. But despite that I have always refused to shit on religion outright.

He was dating Asia Argento for the last couple of years, which is why he featured her in the recent Italy episodes of Parts Unknown.

Her father, Dario Argento, is a legend amongst certain circles in Italy and abroad.

my god, I didn't know he committed suicide until I got to the last few comments. I clicked on the thread without any knowledge. Read this thread from start to finish and ended up with the inevitable. The RVF users noticed something wasn't right. His wife's BJJ and total lack of respect in public was the beginning of his suffering and torment. Let this be a lesson to everyone.

Tony had an 11-year-old daughter. I feel horrible for her, and revolted with him (if this truly was by his own hand) because no child deserves to lose a parent at that age.

In fairness, after Kate Spade and the allegations that she was partially inspired by media coverage of Robin Williams, I think they're being careful. Suicide contagion is a thing and there are published guidelines from medical and psychological groups on how to write stories to avoid it. That language is usually recommended, like here:

He was probably manipulated in these latest years to include politics in his shows, and he also probably hanged out with the wrong kind of people. Too much faggotry in high end kitchens..

Also as a former drug abuser he already had some tendency towards self destruction, possibly the BJJ trainings helped him a bit to change his life, but that treacherous wife made him lost the passion.

I really liked his earlier shows, just food and culture, no bs politics. And thats probably just who he was, some nice dude to chat over some food and beers.

I feel sad for his daughter...and I hope at least she does not have to care about money in the future.
