When I said "Was racial integration a mistake?" at the start of this thread, I was being factious, but this is the kind of shit I was thinking about.

In a monoracial society, if two guys were asked to leave a starbucks 'cause they weren't buying shit, nothing would come of it. They'd bitch to their friends, the manager would tell his friends about these dick customers he dealt with, and by the end of the week both sides would've totally forgotten and moved on with their lives.

If you've never seen a lock on a bathroom or think the policy is stupid I believe you never lived in dense cities with large homeless populations. Every location is different, your suburban Starbucks in Texas doesn't have to deal with the same customer and non-customer base as downtown Philly. Exactly one person in this thread has said they have been in this location, otherwise there are a lot of meaningless comparisons being thrown around.

Also someone in this thread was saying that if the bathroom door was locked he would expect people to start pissing on the floor under the table. Or talking about a guy who publicly pissed his own pants to prove a point when a restaurant said their bathroom was for customers only.

If these guys refused to walk out the door after a manager said "buy something or leave" and then threatened to call the cops, it sounds like they just wanted to get their backs up and drum up hysteria. Don't fall for it.

The Starbucks response is pretty funny and about what you'd expect from a corporate HQ in liberal upscale Seattle. I'll be sure to review my implicit bias the next time I see a dude taking a shit on the sidewalk.

I read my post. Yeah it was too blunt even for me. Before I sent it I was just about to delete it, then said fuck it and submitted it. I regret that one due to tone, but I don’t apologize.

It’s true, blacks can be their own worst enemy though. I say that in frustration. (I didn’t think I had to say it but I guess I do - not all blacks, not even a majority, but enough where you end up with places like Ferguson and Detroit). Bad behavior with little things and the big things add up to bad dysfunction in black communities. Most black communities I’m aware of are not good places.

Little things: not leaving Starbucks when asked for not ordering, walking down the middle of the street, etc.

Bigger things: reaching for a cop’s gun, burning down your own neighborhoods.

Excusing bad behavior, even when it’s small stuff, I think hurts blacks more than anyone in the long run. And excusing bad behavior when these incidents occur is what white liberals and quite a few blacks do. The way this incident is being handled - all the groveling and excuse making - is just going to lead to more flaunting of the rules and turning a blind eye to bad behavior in the black community- which hurts blacks more than anyone. Hence what I mean by “their own worst enemy.” I also had a post about “the soft bigotry of low expectations.” Am I naive to think black communities could improve if we held them to the same standards of behavior as everyone else?

Or the opposite could have happened, and someone asked them nicely to buy something and they responded in a hostile way which offended the worker who was trying to be nice and then they got mad and spoke more sharply.

Anyway, it could easily ended up with everyone digging in, hunkering down morally into their position, whether it was inappropriate attitude or righteous indignation, all parties are feeling disrespected and become intransigent.

Still, no way to know. By the time the police come it is all over, and the lines are drawn. It is 'sitting while black' vs. 'private business rights,' and no one is cooperating with anyone, and we are well on our way to the internet video that can be interpreted in any old way, and the multiple Twitter accusations, followed by the completely predictable apology by Starbucks no matter what happened.

Back in the day when police were part & parcel of the neighbourhood & probably knew most folk by first name.
The easy response to such a situation may have been to simply buy a couple of coffees to allow the black guys to use the restroom without any further drama.
As long as they went on their way after.
Now though, police are a force to enforce tomes of legal text & humanity often goes out the window...
