Man, this is a long thread! So I apologize for any duplication, but I can share some experience with regards to teaching English, particularly in Russia.

First thing I'd say is see teaching English as a short term option to enable and support travel. If you want to spend a year or two abroad it's a good option. You'll get your visa taken care of, and have some income (but not much).

You'll also be offered accommodation, but a) it won't be great, b) it'll be shared, c) you have no control over who you'll be sharing with.

If you have the opportunity, maybe save some dollars beforehand (which will be worth more in most places), to cover the cost of accommodation and just use the money you earn locally teaching as spending money. You can then do private tutoring and all that, where you can be very selective about the students you take)

As a way to meet women it's great. If that's your main goal and you have some savings to milk the opportunity, then why not.

The exception is if you are in your early twenties, maybe. Then you could probably get away with having a shitty shared apartment and no cash.

I'd say set a time limit on it though. All the time spent teaching English will do little to build your future, and you're just spinning wheels really. It's a good opportunity to study the local language though.

There is no real money in English teaching here, from what I've seen, and some offers translate to street sweeping money back home. However, local salaries are low anyway, and comparatively you could be making as much as a doctor, which is a bit nuts.

A BIG exception is govenor jobs. They are full time English tutors for rich kids. The super rich families here will pay top dollar for ivy league/oxbridge graduates to be with their kids all day to bring them up in an English environment. They can offer $1500 a WEEK, private accommodation, and other perks. The best thing though, in my opinion, is the kind of environment you'll be in and the people you get to spend time with. These guys can afford the best of everything though, and their preference is for British females who have graduated from the best schools and universities.

I have never done that job though I know some people who would refuse to take it on for any money. The kid is the boss, you pretty much live with the family, and I guess it could be pretty emasculating. Spending all day with kids is not that manly, and it will beta you over time, for sure. Depends how you play it though. I know one guy who has one of those jobs, and he tells girls he 'works for a businessman' omitting the kids part. Another guy posted a picture on facebook of him boarding a private jet with the family, so you know....

Another interesting thing about the governor jobs is that they pop up all over the FSU. I just looked and there are currently jobs available in Kharkiv, Almaty and Izhevsk - all paying between $5500 and $6000 with free accommodation provided. That would be some serious balling and cash-stacking money in those places where the cost of living is low.

Also - if you are French, Italian, Spanish or German there are opportunities to do this. Rich Russians are particularly keen for their children to know French. Sometimes families will have a rotation of English and French governors/governesses, so you can do one week on, one week off.

To me it doesn't seem common for the governor to spend all day with the child (or children). Usually they start work by collecting the child from school, taking them home and completing homework set by the school, maybe a little bit of extra tutoring and then maybe do some sport or other activity with them. The kids usually have an actual nanny, whose job it is to deal with providing meals and putting them to bed.

So really, you're looking at 3pm-9pm. I have a friend who has done this for 10 years. I was asking him about it this week. He said the private jets and yachts sound great, but that wasn't his favorite part, because you're on call all the time.

He also said that your experience of it can vary hugely depending on the families. I know one guy who is expected to help prep the kid for high school exams, and another who spends most of the time playing FIFA on the Playstation and just shooting the shit in English.

It would appear that the stories of rich Russians with unimaginable wealth flying over native english speakers is true then.

The girlfriend of a guy I used to work with told me that she used to be a nanny for the kids of some wealthy family in Siberia. She's Australian and they would fly her over and have her live with them 1 month on, 1 month off. They wanted her to do it on a more permanent basis but she was reluctant since the distance would cause too much strain on her relationship. They liked her so much that they offered to fly her boyfriend over too and get him a job a driver.

Despite the lavish lifestyle, she eventually quit. As others have said, no real career progression.

do you want to work legally or illegally? if legally then your options are down to southeast asia but they do have beaches

I tried going the online teaching route a few years ago before my online business took off, thinking I’d be able to work remotely, living in paradise while in SEA. But reality set in soon after. lol

The way these online English teaching companies work is, their clients have to pick and book you out of a huge pool of other teachers. We’re talking literally thousands. You are not guaranteed hours or a salary. You’re lucky to even get noticed initially. And, if the students/clients complain at all, they can take away your classes as soon as you get them. Happened to me actually. Luckily I had backup gigs back then, or I could’ve been in a real fucked situation. Again, you’re basically not guaranteed a paycheck with most online English teaching companies. From what I understand, most of them work the same and have the same MO. Especially VIPKid, etc.

Just a heads up to guys out there thinking of doing this. I’ve seen the online English teaching schtick mentioned a lot itt.

This is the ESL industry of 2018, where the women don't stick around long, because no one with at least a 5 inch dick will fuck them, where a policy of zero-immigration in the countries where learning English is the hottest means that all instructors are necessarily tourists with no reason to establish a long term existence of any kind and the supply of young and preppy 20-year olds doesn't even come close to satisfying demand.

For profit "schools" with a love for money and confusion about education are forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel, sometimes even hiring middle aged men or even Australians out of desperation.

What's your online business about? Copywriting? An online store? Just in general, no need to go into specifics if it's an under the radar area.

Here’s the deal. I’m looking to make a substantial amount of money very quickly teaching in China. So my plan was to work a day job like kindergartens or public schools from mornings to afternoons, then get a shitty after school training centre job. But now all the kindys and public school gigs in most tier 1 cities are asking for work visas. They’re afraid of the cops, they claim— apparently they do regular visa check-ups on foreign teachers now.

My problem is I’d rather not get a work visa. It’s such a pain and waste of time and money.

Any suggestions? What would my options be now?

It's a really concern being raiding by immigration. As it currently stands, such raids are routine and on-going.

I wouldn't recommend working anywhere that obviously employees foreign teachers without the correct visa in place. Doing so is just asking for trouble.

Gee whizz boys once you get settled in your center or school. Try to set up some private lessons you can charge much cash for these and the lessons are easy just teaching IELTS or the basics.

Where I am, ads for English teachers ALWAYS have errors in them, whether in English or Spanish. This goes for ads placed by English teachers as well. I used to collect them.
