I feel sorry for her, the inevitable drop from the glory that is herself, to the crushing normalcy that is adult life is going to be devastating. I'm imagining being her now, feeling special and wanted, just for merely being, to the inevitability of gravity, giving her crows feet, jowels, some ass-fat...all starting to increase from thirty years of age to her death. That's forty years of those tattoos haunting her with embarrassment ( stupidity of youth ) poor upbringing ( lower-class parenting, no-one with money or social status would allow their child to look like this), and then her scrambling like hell for relevance. She just had to be! and people kissed her ass. At thirty-five years she'll be in for a ride as she battles with her irrelevance as she no longer is hip, no longer gets looks from hot guys, and is felt sorry for by people who can see she's suffering because of her childish choices.

It's probably been said before, but when soldiers, sailors, bikers and Yakuza get tattoos, it's tradition.
When hipster college-age girls do it, it's a fad.

The above pastimes/occupations of the former are quite literally life or death, and their tattoos reflect that their chosen path is not in the least bit frivolous, which cannot be said of the latter.

There's a very good Italian grocer in my city near downtown that plays Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra loudly...and half of the young employees have ear gauges, colored hair, and are covered in tattoos. If you look closely, you can almost see the sixtysomethings that run the place shaking their heads in shame, wondering how they let the problem get so bad.

I'm in my early 30s in a fairly liberal city...and it's atrocious. Over half of all chicks bangable or not have at least 1 highly visible tattoo. Most of them are terrible. Many chicks with complex crap all over their legs, arms, chest that look like total shit regardless of the quality of the art. I've always had a primal reaction to them, a personal voluntary branding of sluttiness, poor decision making and lack of concern for future consequences. They lower a chick's hotness at least a point in my eyes and demote them severely on the <bang-----------relationship> spectrum. I can't wait until they become uncool in the mainstream.

I think I was caught in the back end of the rising tide of this fad as I started to notice the prevalence right after college in the late 2000's. So many washed up mediocre ~30 y.o. chicks with bad attitudes covered in crappy tats playing wallball...

And faggy weak dudes. I think tats on girls is a projection of what they think is hot and edgy (regardless how fuckin watered down getting tattoos is now from a "badboy" perspective) so clearly guys must think tattoos on girls are hot and edgy. No, it just makes you look like a skank with no sense.

Absolutely. Nowadays if you meet a German dude with a facial scar, there's a good chance he got it from academic fencing. It's an old tradition going back a few hundred years, but the short story is they get these scars deliberately through fencing competitions with sharp blades. As for tats, growing up I always thought if I ever joined the military, then I could see getting one. It wasn't until after I joined the military that i realized most of the guys with tattoos got them when they were young and stupid right out of basic training. A lot of the older guys wish they never had them, but that's changed a bit with the sleeve fad as well as more permissive regulations allowing sleeves and in some cases neck and hand tattoos.

In the early nineties I knew a legal secretary who had a barbed wire tattoo around her right wrist - that was very controversial for back then and she often had to hide it with a few bracelets. Her boss wasn't sure what to make of it, but tats were an easy way to tell if a girl was more likely DTF. Even an ankle tattoo was as good an indicator as big hooped earrings and a choker collar. Once tramp stamps came along, hell, might as well be a bulls eye, right?

But now tats are so ubiquitous on younger people. Even sleeve tats are way more common than I would ever have imagined, usually accompanied by some stupid gauging/self mutilation done to the ears. I agree with a previous poster about the presence of tats having more to do with fair trade coffee connoisseurs and slam poetry aficionados than anything remotely badass.

I stand out more by NOT having any tattoos - glad I never bothered.

I can say with reasonable certainty that it definitely correlates with a higher risk of STDs, and not just from the likely behavior of tatted up sluts.
