^ You've made a lot of good points here! I agree with much of what you wrote.

However, I also believe you are basing and resting the crux of your argument on a fallacious point, namely:

(04-24-2017 11:13 PM)JayJuanGee Wrote:  What does that mean? If you want to read about other topics, then go to those other topics, no? Idea

If you want to read about other cryptos isn't there another thread, already? Isn't it called alternatives to bitcoin?

It looks like this: Alternatives to bitcoin

The problem I see with this argument, is that it assumes since there is an "Alternatives to Bitcoin" thread, that all alt-coins should be discussed there, unless the discussion is directly related to Bitcoin.

However, this is not the pattern other major threads/topics on this forum follow.

For example, in "The Donald Trump thread", Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and the US congress, and North Korea are discussed extensively, sometimes 100s of times - and not only in direct context to Trump, but often independently. And we do have a much-smaller-in-comparison Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders (and North korea) thread. Yet no one has said "go post in the Bernie Sanders forum" - because it's widely an unspoken agreement that these things are relevant.

What I'm trying to ascertain with this vote - is if there is equally an agreement that alt-coin and Bitcoin discussion belong in the same thread. I believe they do.

We can certainly disagree about this, but I hope we can do so without being disagreeable - as this is the proper behavior expected on RVF.

In the alternatives to bitcoin thread you can talk about alternatives to bitcoin and you can talk about bitcoin.. I think it was kind of set up as a kind of compare contrast thread.

Further, if you read some of my earlier posts on this topic in this thread, you may notice that I can come off as a bit passionate about the topic.. it is not about the topic of bitcoin maximalist, but instead it is about the topic of sticking to the topic.

Anyhow, I already conceded that likely near 10% of the posts of this thread tend to be about other topics, so to me it seems that guys are tending to make a BIGGER deal out of this changing the title topic than it merits - in other words a great deal of deviation has historically been tolerated - and most RVF guys understand when they are on topic and when they are not on topic... and should be able to handle figuring out in which thread to post and in which thread their topic is most closely related (in this case, bitcoin or alternative to bitcoins.. sure there could be the creation of other threads, too).

By the way, there are a few posters who purposefully aim to troll and to derail and to distract, so sometimes there can be benefits to attempting to stick to the topic for the benefit of everyone.

By the way, anyone notice the price? Bouncing between $1250 and $1257 as I type.

When are we going to go above $1350?

This week? In the next couple of days?

You think that there is enough steam, or are we going to experience a correction?

in about he past 3 weeks, I have continued to feel a kind of shock about the continued upwards price pressures, and continuing to feel that I might not have enough bitcoin allocated in my bitcoin investment fund - at a tad over 90% right now.... 92% or 93% would feel better for me with these current dynamics, but if the price drops, the 90% is going to feel real good... but I am getting the sense that we might get an upwards spurt before we get a downwards spurt.. .

Who knows better - unprecedented territories, no?

That sounds like a pretty decent idea... hard fork the thread.

Based on Armogan's suggestion, I would create a new thread on my own; however, it seems better to wait for some kind of petition of Roosh or whatever to see whether or not this thread title is going to be changed.

I had a pretty good idea that you didn't know the difference between bitcoin and ethereum, but now, you are proving it. hahahaha

It's the ethereum thread that is going to automatically deduct your RVFDAO.

If one is looking to double their investment this year with a specific coin, what would you recommend? I got into bitcoin finally last year only because I needed it to make a Trump bet. It was in the $600-700 range at that time, so I've doubled my investment simply by holding. My simple plan is to keep buying cheap coin when I can in anticipation of selling some to cash out some profits in 2020 at the next block reward halving. I last bought BTC at $1098 but barring some backwards momentum with this scaling debate I don't see us dropping toward $1k again this year.

With that in mind, since I've got about $5k cash saved up, I was thinking it would be better to buy close to 100 ETH right now instead of a few more bitcoins. ETH looks like the clear number 2 right now, and I like that it has a niche for app developing while a lot of the other alt-coins are just bitcoin derivatives that want to be the new paypal (looking at you DASH). It's definitely still an undervalued asset at only $50, and with Raiden and Metropolis coming in the near future there is reason to believe we could hit or approach $100 sometime this year. After reading up a lot on ETH (from admittedly biased sources), I'm buying the hype and liking it as a long-term investment too. At least I think it will be good to diversify away from BTC only.

Even though I understand your thinking, I think that your mind-set is too gambling oriented, and in that sense your goals are way too fucking high.

I really doubt that there are people, other than insiders who can make those kinds of numbers in a kind of assured way... even shooting for 20% in a systematic way seems to be a very high number.

I am glad that you recognize that you are buying into some hype when you are reading some of the ETH bullshit - but even though we recognize it as hype, it does not mean that ETH might not 10x.. and we know that some coins can more than 10x in a few months if they get enough of a pump and if their market cap is small enough to pump.

If you feel that you have enough invested in BTC, then I see no problem with investing whatever it is that you feel like in a gamble for at least a 2x in your overall investment into other coins in the next year by actively monitoring them.

Each of us is different, and I will admit that I am a bit of a chicken shit, so I, personally, would not gamble with any more than between 5% and 20% of my crypto investment (I mean outside of bitcoin) because I don't think that I have confidence in my own abilities to identify coins before they are pumped rather than dumped and I don't really want to put myself in that mindset.

Accordingly, if I had $5k extra, I personally would need to have anywhere between $25k on the low end to $100k on the high end already invested in bitcoin before I would feel comfortable gambling $5k on the other cryptos.

I understand that surely your ratios might be different, and you may be willing to gamble up to 50% of your crypto holdings or even some other higher number, so yeah, maybe you need to find some guy with a similar mindset in order to help you with figuring that out and hope that he is not scamming you to invest in his bullshit.

At the same time you have to be able to actively monitor and maybe even have stop losses on some of those kinds of investments, so really I personally would have a difficult time figuring out any one coin outside of bitcoin that would give me a pretty high level of confidence on both the upside and the downside ..

At this time, I think Monero, ETC and Litecoin could be decent in those categories, if I were to think of specific coins - because I am skeptical of hype.. and maybe the Golen thing that Amogan had recommended earlier, but I heard about some scamminess in that one too, including the fact that I think that Golen may be tied to the success of ETH.. I am not sure.

Just to note that I think that talking about investment strategies is fine, but then getting into focusing on attempting to identify specific alts that may at least give a high probability of a 2x or more return seems to cause my post here to devolve into being off topic... but anyhow... I am trying to work with you - even though the contents seems to devolve into the alt coin thread to me.

And, also when other guys start to recommend other coins..... you will see that we can go all over the place in this discussion, and it no longer has anything to do with bitcoin, right?

Funny thing is that we still have RVF guys asking about other coins, and this BTC price situation remains just amazing upwards and ongoing BTC price pressures.

Can you imagine how many folks have been contemplating the death of BTC since $890 (a few weeks ago), and now we have BTC prices pushing upwards at $1,275 with no real sign of stopping?

Certainly, I am not going to say that we are going straight to the $3k to $5k price range in the coming months - but there certainly is decent potential for such.

I think that more conservative estimates will put us in the SunW range of about $1800 to $2000 - and yeah, we could get a correction at or before that point, but our current upward price move has not yet become exponential or explosive or punitive, and we may be on the cusp of such a punitive BTC move.. sorry for your losses, guys who are waiting on the sidelines for BTC prices below $700... or even more conservative guys who may have been waiting for another below $1k dip, that is seeming less and less likely.

What about you El Mech? You got any coins left? or did you buy too many consumer goods with your coins?

Here's an interesting article about Tether in which it discusses some of the relations between bitfinex, poloniex and tether and suggesting that a lot of folks might get caught with their pants down.. and lose some of their bitcoin opportunities... maybe similar points to what I have been making, but with some different rationales.

It shows that today, Bitcoin is number 8 in its all time high numbers.. It has been like that for several months. Bitcoin has a lot of substance and a lot happening.. no?
Bitcoin is happening, with price movements and upward and ongoing price pressures, no?

Isn't that a topic about bitcoin?

[edited out]

Any guy want to talk about actual bitcoin? or prices?

Look at the link in my earlier post that contains the top 50 day chart. Yesterday, we were at number 8 daily weighted ATH, and today's candle just closed and shows that the past 24 hours, puts bitcoin at #3.......

number 3, number 3

Hello? No one is excited about bitcoin, and just want to change the topic of the thread?

The last 24 hours, we got a little boost in the price, about 2% up in the average from the day before, so the last 12 hours or so, btc prices have been bouncing between $1,265 and $1,280.

Gonna break upwards?

Gonna break downwards?

Gonna break sideways?

I am still a little bit more inclined to think uppity has a decent favorable - even though it could take another 24 hours or more to find out and I would not be surprised by any of the directions.

So, shall we put it to a vote?

If I read prior posts in this thread accurately, we currently stand at 6-2 in favor of alt-coin discussion taking place independent of bitcoin: Yea (6) - Satoshi, SunW, Armogan, Skank Hunt, Stun, Issac Jordan, and Nay (2) JJG and zoom. Would anyone like to add their tally to the vote, and do we need to open a separate 'vote' thread?

Yes. I think it's easier to keep it all in one general cryptocurrency thread. There are not enough people on the forum interested or enough posting acitivity for multiple threads to be necessary.

What is with all these people coming out of the woodwork attacking JJG? I've been following this thread and his posts since June when I first bought into BTC. In fact, his posts inspired me to do so.

His posts are phenomenal. I even PM'd to tell him to start his own website as he is giving away too much high-quality information here.

And how is he repayed? By people telling him to fuck off and go start his own thread, even though he has single-handedly carried this thread for months now. Oh, and now you guys are coming in here and voting him out? What a joke.

Bitcoin deserves its own thread because, as JJG regularly points out, it's security/stability, high market cap, and general interest among the public sets it above all these "alt-coins", many of which are just ponzi schemes.

This is "The Bitcoin Thread". It's pretty straightforward: BITCOIN ONLY! You guys are clogging up this thread with your petty bickering. We already have Satoshi as the troll of this thread, so please do us a favor and take it elsewhere.

IMO 5k is not a lot of money, especially in crypto. But if I only had 5k personally i'd swing for the fences. Lose it all or double or more. 20% on 5k, only 1k. Double your 5k, 10k. Decent.

If you wanna go balls to the wall here are some options:

2. 100% GNT;
3. 50% ETH other 50% those tokens or maidesafe. Maidsafe will be big, but no one knows when it's getting launched.
4. 100% Van Damme Coin.

Tone the risk down options:
4. 50% ETH, 50% BTC.
5. 100% ETH

If you think you have asperger's but not sure option:
6. 100% BTC
Anything can happen, looks strong and fragile at the same time. Weird charts, weird bitfagnex crap, weird tether crap.

I will agree with any implied point that you may be making, Armogan, regarding that we might not completely know infinitejet's situation - and if he is telling us that he currently has $5k, then that is what he has, and we know that $5k is not chump change and it depends on the person's situation concerning what he has access to.

I don't really agree that you should tell him how much he should have, but I would think that most people should be able to recognize that you do not know their financial situation.

On the other hand, we also know that he had already explained to us that he had already taken a stake in BTC and he was leaning a bit towards taking a stake in ETH with his $5k.

On the 3rd hand, we could probably surmise that any guy may have a certain amount of money saved up (such as $5k), but over a 6 month period, the guy may also have a certain cash flow that would allow a certain amount to be taken from that cash flow to dedicate it to crypto... so if he has $5k, then maybe reasonably we may consider that on a monthly basis he may be able to reasonably access another $500 or so... and that would be something for him to consider regarding his cashflow expectations over the near future.

Well, I'm a gambler at heart. Which is why I'm all-in on crypto. Pretty much all my savings are in bitcoin right now, aside from the cash I have saved up. Many will say I'm a fool, but I'm a young guy and going heavy into crypto while it's still relatively young seems like the best shot I got at multiplying my money 10-15 years down the line. So I'm very bullish on bitcoin and crypto long term.

I already have a bitcoin bank in the range you listed, so I'm very comfortable just sitting on that. I don't want to touch that money. I think we have similar thoughts in that we see bitcoin as the safe crypto. At this point it's too late for the average person to get into bitcoin, and I'm not expecting bitcoin to double in value and cross the $2k mark by end of 2017. Which is why I'm now looking to branch out into alts hoping to catch the next 5-10x coin as it rockets off to the moon if I can.

As for the alt discussion, I mean at this point the thread is unofficially the crypto thread anyway. The other thread just doesn't get any traffic. Plus, all the other alt coins are implicitly linked to bitcoin anyway. They are all apart of the Crypto Court, where bitcoin reigns supreme still.

First, I wouldn't listen to Gee he admits he doesn't know anything about ETH, so you can discount what he says. Second, he can't even spell the thing he is criticizing, its called Golem, not golen. Another example that you should ignore. You can't accurately discredit something you don't know.

IMO 5k is not a lot of money, especially in crypto. But if I only had 5k personally i'd swing for the fences. Lose it all or double or more. 20% on 5k, only 1k. Double your 5k, 10k. Decent.

If you wanna go balls to the wall here are some options:

1. 100% REP (prediction market token; will eventually be able to bet on things like Trump you mentioned;
2. 100% GNT;
3. 50% ETH other 50% those tokens or maidesafe.

Personally, with 5k id say fuck it and throw it all at GNT or REP. Cash out when it doubles.

While I don't necessarily have a "fuck it" attitude with the $5k (it would still sting financially to lose that much), I am willing to take some risks with it. I'm probably gonna put another $10k in crypto too by the end of the year so ideally whatever I invest in now rises in price before I invest next.

I'm definitely gonna buy some ETH, but of the coins you mentioned the only one I have any knowledge of is Golem. It's been at .10 for awhile, but I am intrigued that its pretty much the only coin in the top 15 market cap wise that's still a penny stock. You feeling it will double at least this year? I've thought about dropping a couple hundred on it hoping for a 5-10x return in a few years but I admittedly don't know much about it.

Thanks for the replies guys. As for bitcoin, we're back to ATH numbers again. Hope everyone still has their ticket for this train.

Not really related to the thread but if guys are looking for a way to make a lot of money online while remaining location independent you should look into penny stock trading and shopify. There's also something called swiss golden although im not sure if they run transactions in USA

hahahahaha

You are right... this is not the "looking for a way to make a lot of money online while remaining location independent" thread, but you know what, maybe it could be?

GREAT Idea. Banana You go Amogie!!!

I think that you fail to recognize nuance and the value of interaction and even the value of various opinions.

When it comes to nuance there tends to be overlapping in the levels of agreement and disagreement - and these are not black and white concepts.

Someone who gives their opinion, is not "that guy that came out of the woodwork"

RVF guys have rights to give all kinds of opinions, and other guys have rights to agree, disagree, or give some combination of perspectives without being denigrated as "that guy"

See above. You need not ask in order to receive, sometimes. That is sometimes referred to as individual exercise of discretion, which varies from case to case and individuals determinations about when and how to exercise such.

That's fair enough. Your thinking may be closer aligned with some of the other RVF guys in this thread rather than mine, and really, I have no problem with your choice to apportion higher levels of risk as long as you understand what you are doing and the costs/benefits of such an approach.

You may already be familiar with the Martingale approach, which if not you can look up, but it is the concept to keep betting and keep doubling your bet if you lose. You can win a lot, but in the long run the odds are against you. Lot's of people attempt to play some variation of the martingale approach.

Even if you are a big gambler, you may also consider allocating a bit of your risk, and surely it is good that your bitcoin is currently in the green (or black), but you have equity built up in bitcoin.

I think that there remains some decent upside potential, and it would seem way too risky to me to pull it out and put all of it somewhere else.. so you may come to some level that is comfortable to you.. such as 50% or 30% or some other variation that you keep in Bitcoin, just to attempt a little bit of reasonableness (and attempt at principle preservation or hedging your bets) in your admitted gambling tendencies.

Oh?

Thanks for that further explanation... it's almost as if I should go back and fix my earlier comments, but I am not going to.

So, in some sense you are a bit more prudent than I thought in terms of your gambling of all of your proceeds. So identifying that killer coin (that 2x to 5x to 10x coin), is not going to be easy.

I hate to say this, but in regards to your bitcoin investment, it still can be quite prudent to protect your holdings from volatility by selling very small amounts as the price goes up, so when the price goes down, which at some point it is quite likely to go down, you have accumulated some money to buy back.

My selling on the way up goes through various phases, but overall, I tend to sell about 1% of my total holdings for about every 10% rise, but then sometimes I begin to feel like I have sold too much and I have not bought back enough.

So in this latest rise from $890 to $1300, I ended up selling more than 4% and the price has not really gone back down too much in order to use those proceeds to buy back in.. so sometimes I feel like I have sold too much, but when the price drops, I will feel good about having that stash of dollars to buy back.

You may want to consider some kind of variation of that selling on the way up.. but just remember to keep it small.

You can have a solid and good strategy in regards to bitcoin and still be more risky with other currencies.. and there is nothing wrong with that, which seems to be your current inclinations.

I am not going to concede that all crypto is related to bitcoin, but there are ways to make your arguments and your posts that make them bitcoin related, and there are ways in which they are totally about other cryptos and should go in another thread.

Surely, guys have differing opinions on this. This thread is still the bitcoin thread.. it does not say all cryptos, but surely, a certain amount of that is tolerated and moreso if you at least make some efforts to relate your post to bitcoin.

I am amazed every day in the past few weeks, and I am kind of thinking that bitcoin could be moving into a PUNISHMENT mode - in regards to those folks who have been waiting on the sidelines, you could get PUNISHED. Get your $1,300 coins while you still can... hahahahahahaha

I admit, I don't fucking know, but UPPITY, still does feel pretty strong.

Why? A wise and successful investor once said you should always know why you made or lost money on a trade. If you traded (or held) and made money but you don't know why, you didn't successfully invest, you gambled and were lucky.

So why will Bitcoin continue to rise despite being near ATH? What is it about the climate today that will cause it to ascend from 1300 instead of drop as it did last month?

Here's an article that puts another spin on possible seg wit support

... https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoin-p...it-support

I like the term, emerging consensus.... hahahaha..

That would be a good thing to get some "emerging consensus" in regards to this technological superior innovation (referring to seg wit) and what should really be a non-controversial and straight forward upgrade in the software / protocol.
