NYC seems to be the preferred choice here. For girls and partying I don't think you can beat it. I've always found it to be a tough place to save money, and live a healthy life. I've spent at least $100,000 in my 20's partying there. At my age NYC is not an option anymore, nor is a city with crazy nightlife. I need a city that has a high quality of life - clean, organized, ocean near by for surfing or mountains for hiking/skiing, healthy food.

I think my top 5 would be:
San Diego/OC, San Francisco, Phoenix, Honolulu, and Denver.

Most of my friends live in Minneapolis, but that would not motivate me to live there.

NYC if you make decent money or have serious money - nothing beats the sheer volume of carousel riding women both from within the US as well as tourists.

LA if you are a Hollywood producer or are high enough in the movie business.

What would you guys say are the downsides of living in Vegas? I'm thinking about making the move there myself, and I see a lot of pros.

-24/7 nightlife
-Constant pussy flow from around the world
-Relatively affordable for a big city
-Lots of nature in the surrounding area

Am I missing something? The only negative I hear repeatedly is the crime issue.

Underemployment rate in Nevada is highest in the states, especially in Vegas. Living in a 24/7 party town sounds great till you actually do it and get burned out after a few months. I've known a few people who moved to Vegas with the same thoughts you had but found it wasn't what they were looking for. Visiting as a carefree tourist is tons different then moving there and living there.

As for the partying, I think it's just a matter of having some discipline. I don't gamble. And i go out maybe 1-2 nights a week. So I'm not really a club rat either.

What do you think is causing the burnout there? I imagine living right on the strip would get old after a while. I was looking at Downtown, or maybe Spring Valley.

The Summers are unbearable. August is 100-120 degrees all month. Its 90 degrees at midnight. Plus you are in the middle of the desert

If you are familiar with LA at all, Vegas outside of the strip is basically the Inland Empire. The city is full of trashy, shady people. Take a drive off the strip and you'll see. What's not trash is boring, planned suburbia with mini-malls and McMansions.

Partying in the clubs gets old unless you are in the industry or are well connected. I mean how many times in a month can you go to XS and Omnia over and over again? A lot of locals do not go to the strip anymore. What's left are bars inside minimalls and stuff like that.

Vegas is a blast for 2 or 3 days. You fly in, stay in a nice hotel, trash the room, it gets made up, you get room service, party and repeat. After that, the city really wears on you.

Maybe you really like that, maybe you don't. Got to Los Angeles or Phoenix and it's a big sprawling metro with a lot of other towns you can hit. Vegas is Albuquerque-sized.

I'd get kind of stir-crazy. Better to live somewhere with easy access to Vegas when you want it.

NOLA jumped the shark when they banned smoking in bars two years ago. It's going to the way of Austin. Housing is through the roof and boring transplants are coming from all over. Music venues are declining as revenue drops, noise ordinances increase, and musicians have to commute from outside the city. There's even people trying to ban plastic cups for fucks sake.

Disclaimer I don't live there anymore but I still visit and have friends there. I recommend a trip but be realistic.

However for nighttime legends, NOLA is still in the exclusive club of cities with no closing time. NOLA, South Florida, NYC, Vegas.

Drazen and Jetset's posts were on the money but I'll add my take, having visited Vegas over a dozen times now, including staying off-strip a few times to visit family.

Remember, Vegas isn't a party city in a vacuum - there are laws that allow it to be the way it is. Alcohol can be served 24/7, gambling is legal everywhere, and while prostitution is technically illegal, strip clubs (also open 24/7) that are basically borderline brothels are definitely out there. The result is that in addition to the ritzy clubs on the Strip, the city is teeming with strip clubs, "adult movie stores", slot machines everywhere you can possibly imagine (basically every gas station has them). Furthermore, lots of people move to Vegas specifically for these reasons, and not all of them are cool and fun young guys/girls who just want to party a few nights a week without having a 2am last call. Those slot machines and adult movie stores aren't there to look pretty. There's lots of degenerates and just sketchy ass people who move to Vegas specifically for these reasons.

The weather is good for most of the year, especially if you're coming from Chicago or other spots up north, but as Drazen mentioned, it is fucking HOT in the summer to where you can't even go outside, and it isn't like in the Valley in LA where you can drive out to the beach. It's nothing but desert for miles on end. When you're stuck inside without much to do, it will be very, very hard to "have some discipline" with clubs and gambling as pretty much the only things to do. If you can do it, that's awesome, but I know more than a few people who have moved to Vegas and gone completely off the rails for a month or two.

There are some positives about Vegas, for sure. The nightlife is as good as it gets in America. It is really cheap to live there. You can rent a 4-bedroom house for <$2k, or a studio in a 50-story building on the Strip with a pool, doorman, and valet for ~$1,800. A solid, regular 1BR apt is usually under $1k. Good luck getting that in any major city with good nightlife like Miami or LA, let alone NYC or SF. For better or worse, it's a true hustler city, where a guy without a degree but with drive coupled with "street smarts" can make a lot of money really quickly. Strippers there can make $5k+/mth, as can blackjack dealers. It's one of few cities out there where the rags to riches in a year can still happen.

I can't really imaging living out there. I've spent 4 nights in a row partying there before, and by the end, I just wanted to get the fuck out. Aside from partying, there really isn't much else to do.

Just back to NY passing via Shanghai. They banned smoking indoors last month. Was only there a night so didn't take up offers from promoters I know (offered free entry to 3 different clubs with free drinks all night on Monday). A cheap hotel downtown can be had for $25. Not much else to do. Was bored after a 2-3 months when I lived there a few years ago. Harassment from pimps and whores on e Nanjing rd is worse than i recall. Got my shirt ripped.

When I'm home in New York i mainly visit family and do cultural stuff. Going out is just to time consuming and expensive unless you're a college kid. I'd rather have money to travel and live internationally. And for that NY is a great hub. My trade off is taking the bus an hour to port authority. So I'm just pressed up against the glass now. No easy pussy for me.

Seems like a lot of New Yorkers here. Curious. Has anyone ever gamed in the hellhole of Newark? Anyone have the skills to get a chick to follow them there from Manhattan? I'd think a dumb tourist wouldn't know the difference... Apts there are cheap as fuck and 25 min PATH to city. Though you will be mugged at some point unless you uber everywhere I guess.

Smoking was part of the energy. Smoking adds to the drinking culture and lets everyone let loose.

Part of New Orleans' charm is that it's imperfect. It's dirty. It smells. The houses are 50 years old, everything needs work, there was a ton of damage from the storm. The sidewalks are absolute piece of shit and drunk people fall on sidewalk cracks regularly. Clubs aren't popular, instead smelly dimly lit bars dominate. People come for the grime.

Now? It's the same shotgun house, but with a fresh new paint job, brand new driveway, and a yuuuuge price gauge.

NOLA is one of the hidden gems of the USA.

Chicago crime is overrated. The vast majority of it happens in a small portion of town that you would have no reason to ever go to. That shouldn't factor into anyone's decision. All other points I've read are valid.

Biggest con to Chi is weather. Two biggest advantages are density and cost of living.

Boston does have a bad reputation but I recommend it on a personal level - depends on your personality but for those of us who are not the "smiliest heeyyy how are you fake smile" all is well types, it is a great place. I like Boston's attitude in social matters and people leave you alone...NYC used to be like that too and even though I prefer NYC as a city, I feel it has way too many transplants and it is too crowded to have a good quality of life at all times. Puerto Rico could be great as well. Not sure what the implications of living there long-term would be, but when I visited San Juan for two weeks I had more fun than I've had in any city in the "U.S. proper".

Beautiful latina women, great beaches, phenomenal food, got to practice my spanish, just a short drive away from El Yunque National Forest which is the only Tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System. Short flights to Europe, NYC, and South America. Hell, Cuba is a boat ride away.. It's basically Dominican Republic-light.

If I was confined to US soil, I would seriously consider PR.

I'd either live somewhere boring like Pittsburgh or Cleveland with a solid job making 100k+ a year combined with cheap, affordable housing, save my money and get the hell out as soon as possible or go all or nothing in New York which I enjoyed a lot (albeit as a tourist). The US is a tough place for the average 20 year old middle class chump. You'll waste your youth away in a cubicle and spend your weekends playing video games in your suburban man-cave. It's fucking depressing.
Been to Vegas once, wasn't impressed one bit. The whole thing is a money making machine, nothing more. Many clubs make it a chore just to get in. Be prepared to sign up on guest lists, pay for VIP access, show up early (forget getting in after midnight), dress up, BYOB (bring your own bitch) and other crap like that.
