Relax. Tensions are rising, for sure, but a strike on Tokyo still falls within the realm of extremely unlikely. The reality is that North Korea would be nuked into oblivion if it so much as touched Tokyo. Kim knows this.

Japan and the US have a treaty whereby the US is obligated to strike back if Japan gets attacked. That is partly how Japan has been kept officially "pacifist" for all this time since WW2.

Some Japanese don't trust the US with regards this agreement (especially with Obama's previous policy of kissing Chinese ass). There are doubts as to whether the US has their back. Many conservatives have been calling for the a change in the famous Article 9 of the constitution, which forbids not only war but an official military too, so that Japan can build an official military and nuclear weapons. But, I think that under Trump, Japan has nothing to worry about. Time will tell. As for your trip though, you'll be fine.

Can't talk for him, but one of my very best friends went to NK in 2013. He's what I call it an IYI as Taleb describes (incredibly well-read and eloquent, yet trusts fake news media too much, in mould of Sam Harris). He told me some fascinating stories about the place.

It's actually an interesting thing to travel to obscure, non-mainstream places. Makes for unique stories. I, myself, am going to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan next month...looking forward to learn more about the mystery that is Central Asia.

There was a BBC documentary from 10-15 years ago called Holidays in the Danger Zone, which had a couple of episodes focused on holidays in the Axis of Evil (Syria, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Iraq and Cuba).

I don't often say this about the BBC, but it is well worth checking out.

They came across as practical, not fanatics, there was no passion behind the words and particularly the guy came across as very tongue in cheek when he was talking about how 'great' things are in N Korea.

I'd imagine if you decapitate the citizenry would be relieved they dont have to go along with this shit any longer.
