Once you register for a Coinbase account, the process is really easy to set up a GDAX account and to move some value over to the GDAX account, yet if you have some additional assurances by holding the dollars either in the Coinbase dollar account or holding the value in your bank, those are personal choices. There is also the possible risk of an issue if you are moving money to your bank then that could be more likely to trigger tax consequences and/or needs to account for those transactions (in terms of taxes).

I see that when you are talking about measuring industry, you are referring to the overall market cap of all of the crypto coins, as seen here.

http://coinmarketcap.com/all/views/all/

Sure, your own wealth may depend upon how you allocate investing in each of the coins, and some of us have taken various stakes in those coins and also we will be able to move around our investment allocations in the coins... which may cause some guys to be more rich than others.

And, the coins is only one aspect of potential investments into the cryptospace, because the overall infrastructure seems to be much larger, and seems to be several times larger than the value of the coins.. even though investing in the coins may be the most practical - especially on an entry level.

You could be correct that there is some kind of resolution in the works, but I cannot really anticipate what that resolution would be (that is in the works for the next 24 hours), except some kind of token resolution that brings confidence back to the market (that a hardfork is not imminent, for example).

A token resolution would possibly cause a temporary rise in price by $100 or more, but if there were a real meaningful resolution (which seems a lot less likely), we could get a pump into the $2k plus arena.

If no resolution - not even token resolution (which does seem to be a less likely scenario), then wouldn't that mean downside, maybe even testing support at $800?

Yeah, I made a similar post to my one above in response to the tweet in another bitcoin thread.

In that post, I was inquiring into the contents of the tweet regarding meeting taking place, and the tweet was pretty much discounted as being from someone who has a very short tweet history (low credibility).

So we do not really have any evidence from anyone credible that any actual meeting is taking place today.

Yesterday, I did see some quasi-credible news (from coindesk.. hahahahahaha) that there is a tentative meeting planned for May.. and I had posted it above... here is the link for ease of reference:

Maybe if today's candle turns out to be green (which we will find out in 4 hours), then I maybe willing to provide a tentative prediction that we will largely stay in the $950 to $1050 price range for some time into the next few weeks, at least - if not longer... but if it turns out to be red today or tomorrow, I will become less likely to make such an assertion (prediction).

Again, let's see how the market plays out in the next few hours and then in the next day in order to become more confident about whether there still remains some price support, and I may be willing to venture my quasi-short term prediction in the range that I stated.

Anyone else?

By the way, Skank_H, you did not provide any kind of probability level to your suggestion that $600 to $700 is a decently probable event in the near future. I take it from the fact that you said it, you provided graphs, and kind of arguing that it is likely, that you are giving such a scenario greater than 50% chance of occurring in the coming weeks?

At this time, assuming that my prediction of the non-happening of a hardfork is correct I would give such $600-$700 scenario in the coming months to be less than a 25% chance.. that is my tentative consideration of your anticipated price correction scenario, as I type.

Anyone else?

As a follow up to my earlier post (above), I am going to assert that today's candle is pretty much a done deal and going to close in the green (we are at $963 and just bounced up $10 in the past 20 minutes)

We have about 13 minutes remaining in today's candle, and the price would have to drop to below $928 for today's candle to close in the red.

I would prefer to wait one more day to see if we have another daily green candle before I would assert that we are out of the woods - but for the moment, the upwards price pressures seem to be decent and ongoing and we seem to be bouncing back in a decent way from the extremes of the correction of the past few days.

Today's candle was a nailbiter, and just barely closed in the green on Bitstamp - and did not close in the green on other exchanges. Therefore, I am going to put off any prediction regarding whether we are out of the woods yet... .. at least to see one more daily candle - tomorrow's.

At this point, tentatively we could be bouncing around in a price range of $800 to $1,150 for several months.. and I will still assert that I believe that the odds are greater that a break out will go through the top of the range rather than through the bottom.. yet it is seeming possible that we could be in this range for some time. Actually, if we were to continue downwards in the next 24 hours and support does not hold, then I would possibly change my tentative opinion about $800 holding as well.. but for now, mid-$900s seem to be our temporary and still uncertain price territory.

Classic is not the same as bitcoin unlimited.

The first attempt at a hardfork was XT in august 2015, and then that was pretty much abandoned.

The second attempt at a hardfork was classic starting in about December 2015.

The third attempt at a hardfork was BU.

Classic has a pretty small share of mining or whatever, maybe less than 1%

I don't know what the fuck they are doing, so their actual hardfork, if it were occur, may not have too much of an impact, unless they get some BU folks jumping on their chain.

You were looking kind of fucked for a little bit.

We went from $990s (about the point that you bought) to $937, and then now bouncing in the $1020 to $1030 arena- and maybe even seeming like there could be legs for a good $30 or more in the upside.. we will have to see how that part plays out.

I am glad that the whole matter pulled through in the positive direction for you, and for the rest of us who had been attempting to hold our bitcoins and to buy on the dips and may have been worrying about the extent to which we were retracing upwards from the correction down to $900.

This recent price movement does seem to be a decent indicator that at least $900 was able to hold as the shorter term bottom. We might go back, but at least for now we have a bit of a price cushion and some ongoing upwards price pressures.

Generally, I don't have a system in place for margin trading, so I understand that the dynamics are different to set up systems in order to attempt to make more than you lose (and the rationale for the stop loss)... as compared with regular buying and holding and selling.

Yet, I also understand the viewpoint that you gotta bet big to win big - and maybe some day, I might attempt to dabble with small amounts of margin, just to get a bit more personal experience and a better sense of it on a personal level - especially since my monitoring of crypto space does seem to give me some decent inclinations regarding likely possible short-term price movements - even though manipulation and misinformation can also cause any of us to get our inclinations wrong on a regular basis.

Reading my posts above I did mention that in quick, fast corrections on the weekly chart it's nearly always 3 big candles max followed by some relief. That's either followed by sideways bouncing, further downside or a continuation of upward trend.

When I posted that chart BTC was around $900-950 I think. The wave 5 didn't go as low as I drew but it's just rough - the point was the 5 wave pattern ended and bounced back up for some relief to 1000-1050. So as on the chart we should be in wave A. So this will be followed by some bouncing back down a bit in wave B followed by increase in wave C followed by a possibly scary second five wave impulse. It depends whether the correction is complex or simple. If simple, there is an alternative pattern where ABC has already been completed and now we're on a continuation of the uptrend.

However, with all the uncertainty and (quite frankly) absolute nonsense coming out of the BTC sphere lately, I would not be rushing to buy. Even if BTC continues up to 1500 in spite of these pressures it's just appetite for risk of losing capital being rewarded, like gambling. All crypto investment is gambling in a sense but this just has a lot more risk than usual it seems. Nearly the worst case scenario is a giant ABC pattern after the ATH years ago, where A was the ~$150, B the recent $1300 ATH, and C a decline back to ~$150, after which a new wave up begins. That would be extreme and probably would require some news of genuine collapse.

I mention Dogecoin and look what it fucking goes and does: 15 satoshis to 33 satoshis in 2 days. Joke coin or not, they're all shit coins. Could have doubled my money. But who would really put a huge % of his net worth in something called "Dogecoin"? That's the risk we take!

You look on poloniex and see random new shit coins pop up with 1700% gains and you see how absolutely insane it is. BTC had largely avoided a lot of that as it became bigger but the BU/Chinacoin stuff has dirtied it somewhat.

As for probability of BTC following the wave count I posted, if only roughly, quite a good chance for $600-700 especially if this BU stuff keeps going unresolved. But we could get a piece of news tomorrow that BU have disbanded and given up and all is back to normal. In which case price might shoot up. At the other end of the spectrum is that the BTCChina people get their wish and nail BTC as the real ETH became ETC and 95% of its value was wiped out and everyone started to follow the new coin.

I would have liked to just bought some coins, held them for a few years to see what happened. The craziness and instability of the asset itself is probably a major reason why the ETF was denied.

I do think we should be able to discuss ALTs on this thread, I wasn't always of this position, but getting into the right ALTs and getting out of the wrong ALTs has a lot to do with BTC. BTC is no longer the only player in town and billions are being made from these apparent shitcoins. It's a shame to miss out on that. I think members of the forum would like to be part of that and to keep each other safe as much as possible, because there is a LOT of shit out there.

Go for it, man... I also think that a lot of the altcoin discussions affect BTC in direct or even tertiary ways, and there's no reason why you can't discuss those types of things in this thread.

I see that ETC has had a similar 90% run up in the past month. After the ETC/ETH fork, I just kept my ETC on poloniex because it was such a small dollar amount that even if it got hacked, I wouldn't really blink. Now it's starting to actually look like a actual money.

Ultimately, I recommend guys do what they want; however, if you do not have any BTC at all, your considerations might be different from if you have accumulated a number of BTC at prices lower than the current price.

Almost always I have been recommending a kind of two pronged strategy to get into BTC (that sometimes can turn into three prongs). The main point is there is no need to wait until tomorrow and attempt to time the market. So, in that regard, guys can find an amount that is comfortable to him and dollar cost average - whether that is $10 a week or $100 per week. The second prong is to attempt to buy on dips (with another portion of whatever a guy allocates towards BTC), and that buying on dips can be a matter of degree and attempts at best approximations to get in while the price is going down. The third prong is completely optional, but a bit more advanced and complicated, and that is to sell small portions of your stash as the price goes up in order that you have some extra money on the side to buy dips and also even considering taking some of that off of the table. Each of these practices are matters of degree and also matters of guys finding comfort levels that work for them.

(03-27-2017 06:09 PM)Skank_Hunt Wrote:  All crypto investment is gambling in a sense but this just has a lot more risk than usual it seems.

I don't know if it is worse than usual. There is decent FUD out there, and BTC has been experiencing a pretty high price plateau over the past several months - and especially the last month. I am kind of inclined to believe that bitcoin is not any more "dead" than the multiple previous times that it was declared as "dead."

Yep it is possible, but as you acknowledge an extreme and not as likely of a scenario. Yet anyone investing should prepare for some of these kinds of extremes, but still consider how likely is the scenario and how much to allocate based on such likelihood that is perceived... and yeah, the good ole saw.. "never invest more than you can afford to lose."

I think that past practices of this thread have remained in line with various ideologies in the forum, as you suggest.. which is to help to provide perspective that may not be easily attainable in mainstream sources and sometimes even to really draw into question mainstream sources of information regarding bitcoin (and sometimes discussing alts, too).

So, I don't really have any problem with attempting to "protect" guys from some of the mainstream bullshit - however, one of the problems with attempting to lump all alts into the same category as bitcoin becomes a muddling of some of the bitcoin messages.

Even though guys might be able to prosper considerably by playing various alts, frequently the mainstream will also pump various alts in order to denigrate bitcoin and to plant disinformation about bitcoin or about whatever alt coin pump de jour is taking place.

Also, some RVF guys are way more informed about bitcoin than others, and sometime incorporating too much alt coin talk in this thread could cause way too much muddying of the waters, rather than having some of those discussions in another decent thread that we have that is specifically on the topic of alts. Nothing wrong with having two related but not exactly the same threads... and of course, there could be some justification to actually starting some other threads that might be on specific alts or a specific set of alts or even some of the other developments in the alt space that might be good for its own line of discussion.

Actually, if we were to continue downwards in the next 24 hours and support does not hold, then I would possibly change my tentative opinion about $800 holding as well.. but for now, mid-$900s seem to be our temporary and still uncertain price territory.

With the closing of today's candle clearly, unambiguously and fairly solidly in the green, I'm going to tentatively call our current price consolidation range as between $950 to $1,150.

Accordingly, I am not going to get too excited if the price moves in either direction within what I consider the current range - until it might look like we could be breaking out of the range in one direction or another.

Furthermore, in spite of the ongoing Hardfork FUD and some other "bitcoin is dead" nonsense, at this time, I will continue to place the odds that a price breakout to the upside seems to be a bit more likely than a price break out to the downside.

Surely Skank_H has already given a contrary opinion, and he does back up his opinion well, but his assessment seems a bit more bearish than justifiable (in my opinion, especially given network effects and s-curve adoption dynamics that I have considered to be part of the price pressure considerations).

Not to be too flippant, but this is an opinion, so I am not really very wedded to whether I am correct or not, but I am calling the situation in the way that I currently see it, based on a variety of recent price movements and long term fundamentals from my viewpoint.

Whether or not SunW should keep open his margined long from yesterday (to the extent that he has not cashed out any at this point) is surely up to him, but I would again suggest the practice of some form of incrementalism in cashing out (that incrementally cashes out between here, $1,035 and $1095. I would not attempt to play such a margined long beyond $1,095) - but then again what the fuck do I know about playing the margin trading scenarios? and SunW certainly knows his own situation better than anyone else yet any guy attempting such kinds of margin plays needs to account for his own financial situation, his own past experiences and his risk tolerances.

Skant, you're not allowed to talk about other coins on here, it's against the rules.

The reason that ETH has skyrocketed is because what is in the pipeline. zk-SNARKS, raiden, PoS hardfork. The last one especially is what's driving prices. If they can get the last one to implement by end of this year or early next year, ETH is going to be over $100 easy. Under $75 is still undervalued.

I don't think ETC will be able to utilize these implementations, despite you labeling it the "real ETH", which is not the right way to think of it all in my opinion.

But if you're really looking to park some things elsewhere. Look at GNT. JJG certified pump-and-dump. I know a thing or two about pump and dump - went to BKK 4x in 18 months. I used some profits over the weekend and threw 5k at it, jumped 25% in one day. I'm considering throwing another 20k at it. At $.05, i'd say it's cheap. This thing can really go 100x, if they do remotely what they are trying. And that's what only $5 a coin? Wow.

Don't know much about doge, but going to read up on it.

Was bored today and went margin long. We shall see what happens.

^^ On which exchange is GNT listed and where you can trade at?

I bought a few ETH btw. Tossed some play money at it, and if it explodes -- great.
