She's not thankful he's a good father, she's thankful he'll do stuff for her when she wants him to and buy stuff for them. He's basically an ATM machine/babysitter to her.

If I were him I'd work out a custody/financial agreement not based on her feelings but based on what is fair. That would never happen in our judicial system thought. And thankfully I'm not him.

Well, this way she get's to take his money now AND whack him for back support whenever she's pissed off at him. Prevents him from fighting her for custody when he wakes up too, on paper he's a deadbeat dad. Don't forget, any money spent supporting your child is automatically excluded from your Child Support debt.

The only vague and plausible rationale I could imagine for this kind of behaviour is as a long game to keeping your son in your life in a positive manner until he's old enough for you to explain to him what a fucking whore his mother is.

Meanwhile gathering evidence of her shitty mothering would be useful, or even obtaining flat out blackmail material. God forbid I found myself in this situation I could see myself playing nice while setting the bitch up for a fall. When it comes to sons you need to get custody of them just prior to puberty. Everything I did would be premised on that eventual goal, no matter how lame it made me appear in the short term.
