Sure, I agree with you that it is a relatively low probability event for approval, but I would place approval in the 35%-ish territory, rather than 10%-ish.

The probability doesn't matter, I think we can both agree it is not likely to be approved. That's all that is important.

The level of probability assigned to the possibility matters, and personally I attempt to act in accordance with the level of probability that I assigned to any event that I deem to be material. I will also recalculate when I find material information that changes my assessment, conclusions or leanings, which also might cause me to change my investment behavior.

Whether I am detail oriented or not regarding a certain topic does not mean that I am going to be correct about it, but it does mean that I attempt to find a level of comfort for myself. Some guys may not care about details, while other guys do, and whether a guy cares about details may depend upon how much he cares about that particular topic and how much he has invested into the topic.

Maybe I don't understand what you are saying here? I do agree that the Winklevoss have outlined a variety of scenarios that attempt to assess risks and to account for what they would do in regards to the playing out of various future risk scenarios.

I don't really understand what you mean by "no upside for SEC approving it, only downside." It seems that if that statement were actually true, the SEC would have already denied it by now, no? You believe that the SEC is just going through the motions and they are not actually contemplating ways in which they could actually approve it? Or there are certain "deal breaker" aspects of the ETF that are very unlikely to overcome and the SEC is actually considering whether the "deal breaker" aspects of the ETF could be overcome?

The SEC has no financial incentive to approve this. They get no commission, no bonus, etc. But if investors lose a lot of money through a hack or some adverse event, the SEC didn't do their job and the people that approved this will likely get fired or have experienced a tarnished reputation. Zero upside, big downside.

I doubt that the factors that you listed are really very controlling in the decision making process, and sometimes there may be factors that are not readily apparent, including whether government officials, whether high up in the administration or at lower levels, believe that the government should be involved in such a thing as bitcoin and whether an ETF helps them in some public policy objectives, maybe including attempting to have some controls in the bitcoin space.

But, in the longer run, it is not only the news event that is driving the price but the context in which such news event takes place.

I think this is exactly what we are seeing happen with this crazy price appreciation this week. Big whales bought a lot of BTC, this moved the needle. They knew if they moved the needle they could trigger a FOMO reaction from the laymen. This moves the price up even more.

Yes there are dynamics that involve momentum, and at certain times there will be opportunities to increase momentum in one direction or another based on what the masses of people are doing... but there is a lot more going on in the bitcoin space beyond mere momentum. There are fundamentals and there are an increased number of exchanges that make price changes much more complicated than they were a few years ago (when there was not really opportunities to short bitcoin, for example).

If you are characterizing your own analysis of bitcoin in terms of a "classical" pump and dump, then you are likely looking at bitcoin from a bit of an incorrect framework. Sure there is some pump and dump going on in bitcoin, but bitcoin is much more varied than some mere pump and dump scheme. Hopefully in the future, you will be able to reconsider some of that simple perspective and/or maybe even come up with a bit more sophisticated analysis than that.

Sure. some may cash out, but bitcoin has a broader base than you seem to be suggesting and price control is becoming much more spread out that it is not really easy to manipulate in ways that you think and based on one or two news event topics.

Yeah, of course we agree that if there is approval, then there is likely decent BTC price appreciation based on that and partly because approval seems to be the underdog outcome at this moment.

"key" Alts are all over the place. Sometimes they correlate with bitcoin and other times they do the opposite. Some of them, also, have their own pump and dump facts going on, which makes specifics and generalizations hard to call regarding all of them when sometimes the events of one or two "key" alts could have an impact on what is happening with other alts, separate and apart from the BTC ETF question.

I disagree as we saw earlier this week. Big money came out of alts and into BTC. The price impact of what's happening with alts I believe is related to the ETF question, especially in this very volatile period. Money is going out of alts and into BTC, this could all reverse very quickly.

Sure, there is some bitcoin money moving in and out of alts, but that is only a fraction of bitcoin's money, and it seems that you are continuing to give too much weight to that... .. but no matter what, you surely can bet in accordance with your view of what is happening, causation and probabilities and sure that is a good approach... and likely even if each of us has differing views about causation and weighing of events, it is likely that each of us could still make money over this situation.

Probably depends on the alts, and is seeming to stray a bit from the topic of this thread.. but there is an alt coin thread, and if you wanted to get into detail discussions about alts, then probably that other thread would be better for such.

I'm not saying bitcoin is a pump-and-dump scheme; however, it doesn't seem unreasonable to conclude that in the short-term there is potentially some pumping going on driven by whales triggering a FOMO reaction. They could dump coins in the short-term increasing volatility. Forget long-term I'm talking two weeks to a month.

How can the event be priced in when it appreciated like crazy this week. We both agree that it is not likely to pass, if it is priced in why did it skyrocket? Look at the appreciation the last week, the last month. If the market anticipated (priced in) that the ETF would be rejected why did it appreciate so much? Shouldn't it decline in price if the market anticipated the ETF was going to be rejected?

You said that you think bitcoin could drop by at least 10% if the ETF isn't approved. That implies the event is not priced in. If news comes out and then it drops in price, it is not priced in.

Any statement that xyz is "priced in" is pure speculation and is rarely backed by anything meaningful. You can't accurately say something is priced in or not, you can only speculate. We'll see what happens in the near future, if the ETF is rejected and BTC drops in price dramatically (10%+) we will know the event was not priced in.

All of this still pure speculation, thinking about it more the ETF could be approved after all who knows. In fact, the deadline is March 11, it could be approved/rejected any day before. I'm just ready to react once something gets released.

You are still implying that BTC prices are controlled by a low number of players.

I will concede that there bigger and smaller whales.., but those exist on both ends.. and sometimes there can be a question regarding whether some have control over the price or not.

It should be fairly clear that even whales sometimes will lose control of the price and the whales on both sides have disagreements about whether the price should go up or down. And, yeah if you are a bigger whale, you may win the argument at one time or another or be able to predict larger manipulations that you are capable of doing, but sometimes it is quite clear that even the bigger manipulators lose control over the price direction and they cannot contain it any longer.

People can make money in both directions and not only the leaders (whales) are making money, even though they likely are able to make more and they are able to hedge and manipulate as you say to a larger degree.

In the end, if you want to have fair understandings about bitcoin, you have to go in your thinking much beyond the manipulation factors (even though I will concede that there is some manipulation going on, but it is certainly not as much of an overwhelming force that you seem to be making it out to be.. even with your clarified explanation).

Again. The price of bitcoin is not only about one or two news items, and even if the ETF is effecting price movements this week, there could be pushing up before pushing down and still playing on some expectations that folks have, even if those folks are in the minority of influencers.

I think that we are beating this to death, and each of us already made our points on this narrow aspect related to bitcoin.

You are not going to get me to come out with definitive comments because bitcoin there are a lot of factors and a lot of weighing of factors and if one factor changes then another factor is affected and those change over time.

If something is largely priced in, then it will have a smaller effect than if it were not priced in, but being largely priced in does not mean that it is not going to have no effect at all.

(02-23-2017 11:15 AM)Armogan Wrote:  Any statement that xyz is "priced in" is pure speculation and is rarely backed by anything meaningful.

Sure it is speculation, but it is not pure speculation. Look. There is some evidence that is stronger than other evidence and there is imperfect information that is not equally distributed among people.. and that is why we will frequently come to various assessment based on what we know and how much weight we are giving to different factors.

(02-23-2017 11:15 AM)Armogan Wrote:  You can't accurately say something is priced in or not, you can only speculate.

We can give varying weight to different factors that are known and unknown.

Correlation does not always equal causation, and even a purported explanation may not be the actual cause(s). Many factors cause changes, and sometimes there can be relatively small events that on the margins make a large difference, even if by themselves they are fairly unimportant.

Does not hurt to continue to watch and reassess, and sure each guy is going to have varying information pieces and perspectives that will likely change over time, especially if he is paying attention and able to assign values to differing events.

Actually, let me go back to an earlier point that I made regarding making money.

I asserted that each of us are likely to make money, even if we have differing perspectives, and that may be a different topic.. however, making money may depend on whether you employ a strategy that attempts to hedge a variety of possibilities, even the possibility that you are wrong in the short term or wrong about how big of an effect any one event or narrow number of events might have in the short term.

My strategy is to continue to prepare for short term price movements in both directions, and frequently, regarding short term price movements, I will only bet a few percentage of my holdings in one direction or another based on my own assessment of short-term probabilities, otherwise, I largely prepare for either direction and I am accumulating bitcoin with a presumption of long term increases in BTC prices - in other words, I don't bet much if anything on shorter term movements, or things like the ETF.. .. but I do watch and sometimes I will throw a little extra in one direction or another.. if I see a sudden movement and expected increasing sudden movement.

Don't get me wrong, Armogan, but it seems that you and I are getting caught up on a level of short-term speculation that is a bit beyond my personal interest, so maybe there would be some other RVF guys who would be better ready, willing and able to engage with you on those kinds of topics or to interact with you in regards to various attempts to predict shorter term BTC price directions or the potential impacts of various news events to the shorter term BTC price directions.

I have no problem with you having those kinds of interests and expressing them in this thread, because they are certainly relevant to bitcoin and they are certainly the kinds of topics that people think about when they are going to attempt to play bitcoin as an investment either on a short term basis or on a longer term basis.

Even though I trade BTC for the purposes of protecting myself from some of the ongoing expected BTC price volatility, I consider myself a longer term investor in bitcoin and I just don't play my BTC investment that much in regards to assigning much weight to whether BTC prices are going up or down 10% or 30%, because I systematically sell BTC if the price goes up and I systematically buy BTC as the price goes down.

I deviate from my systematic buying/selling practices in only small ways, and surely some examples of my deviation do come up from time to time. Also, from time to time, I will tweak my strategies based on either changes in the market or changes of my perceptions. Surely, I may play the ETF news a little bit, to the extent that it might appear that it is causing (or likely to cause) a kind of additional large push in BTC price in one direction or another... but yeah, I already gave you my assessment that I believe that it is largely priced in as about a 30% likelihood of disapproval.. therefore, if it gets approved, there are 70% of predictors who are reassessing their conceptions and maybe readjusting their investment based on an outcome that they did not expect.

Same (but opposite) is true, regarding a disapproval of the ETF. 70% already expect a disapproval, but 30% did not.. blah blah blah.. so affect is likely going to be less, if disapproval is the actual outcome of the ETF. These are not strict numbers and they are not black and white and they are also affected by other things that are happening, including whether whatever level of pump or dump is able to break through support or resistance and how fast and those kinds of occurrences will affect probability predictions of subsequent possible price movements. Sometimes, if you watch the market movements, you will see one side or the other seem to shoot their whole wadd at making an attempt in one direction or another, and when that fails, sometimes the price will move radically in the opposite direction of the whale manipulator who had been attempting one direction.

The below linked thread includes several threads and also synopses regarding meetings involving a couple of potential ETFs. The thread topic is interesting, cinlcuing the links.

I think that the mere meetings does not necessarily conclude green for the ETF for sure, but such a set of happenings probably increases the probability of green for the ETF.

Fair enough I just bring this up because I think this is the big elephant in the room at least for the next few weeks. We can have differences in opinion on what's going on, but at the end of the day I think we both understand something potentially material about to happen and are planning ways to hedge or profit from it.

So what's your play on the upcoming ruling? I'd consider entering a small short to mimic a put - sort of like I did right before election day - but it seems a lot more complicated than I'd like it to be and it seems Bitfinex only gives 2.5:1 leverage instead of the 100:1 on an option.
Armogan 路 2017-02-24 03:21:00 路 #3564
I actually think of it the other way around: a put mimics a short position. I never like shorting, especially when you can buy a put. Why short, which has unlimited downside and limited upside, when you can buy a put that has limited upside but also limited downside? Basically, eliminate the downside risk.

I definitely wouldn't short BTC, especially in this volatile environment. Even though there's a good chance the ETF gets rejected, what happens if it doesn't? Who knows how high it could go, your short will fuck you up the ass. Not an ideal position.

You can buy put options at Deribit using BTC. I haven't done anything with these, but looking at the March 31 $1000 strike put options. These are European options vs. the typical American options, the difference being you can't exercise before the expiration date. It has to have a big price movement to make it profitable. This could make a lot sense for people with large of unrealized gains, essentially buying insurance and protecting gains.

But mainly I'm anticipating a drastic drop and buying more at a low I deem reasonable. We shall see what happens, could barely react. I can see $1000 as a new norm, even after a big drop. Icahn did this exact thing during the election. SPY dropped like crazy and he just swooped up a bunch and rode the wave. Nothing revolutionary.

Overall, I'm bullish long-term but any negative news could jolt it downward unnecessarily. Ride the wave back up. In addition, I won't go into too much detail as its not entirely BTC related, but I have a good sized alt stash. Been monitoring alt/btc pair and I think it could appreciate in response to ETF rejection (could very well move the other way though - same direction as BTC). In that case, will be simultaneously trading, swapping/converting as much as I can to capitalize on the ratio and increase the BTC stake. Essentially, I'll get more BTC for this alt, and will ride the wave back up.

If this ETF gets rejected there are other ones, something will eventually get approved. I'm bullish long-term.

Assuming it gets approved go all-in and ride the wave, its probably going to get high real fast. Trump has indicated to be somewhat pro-crytocurrency, not sure how much impact he has on a decision but this should be considered.

Whats your guys thoughts on the ETF? Seems most people feel less than 30% chance it's approved. I feel like it's largely already priced in that it won't get approved so while maybe we pull back $100 if it's not approved I don't see a big slide. I hear some people say down to $600, NO WAY iMHO.

I feel like there's a lot more upside to downside currently. If we get approved were gonna go to $1500 who knows maybe even close to 3k. If we dont get approved maybe back to $1100, $1,000 worst case scenario.

I feel like any "the sky is falling" news is an awesome time to buy as things always seem to rebound.

Basically my strategy now is this. I'm limited to $2500 purchases at a time so on any pullback I buy $2500, as soon as we rise I sell $2500, take my profits and let the lest sit in BTC. Keep doing it and I'm slowly accumulating more BTC.

I am comfortable with my BTC for the long term so don't really feel the need to add large positions especially at these prices. I'm just tryign to be greedy and accumulate a little more on swing trades.

I think that the point was made earlier that the SEC has a lot to lose and little to gain by approving the ETF at THIS point. I know that there is still some concern about hacks, bugs, etc. that will likely cause a rejection. However, these concerns will be noted in the report produced by the SEC and will provide a clear outline of what needs to be done for future approval. Short of demanding that privacy be exhausted, I see the ETF as an inevitability, even if its not happening in 2 weeks.

Hahahahaha...

Surely, times are exciting in bitcoinland.... yet there could be additional exponential upwards price action if the ETF is approved and possibly a decent sized correction (even up to 25% is reasonable), if disapproval were to come after a pump (such as the one we are currently experiencing - which is approaching 25% in about the past three weeks).

I've held off on buying more bitcoin since it went over $1k, but right now its looking like the rocket is officially off and we might not dip below that again for the foreseeable future, even if the upcoming ETF is rejected. There will be a correction coming soon, but the question now is when to buy in again? Exciting times for sure though to break the ATH.

Gots me a problem. I have too many bitcoins from purchases last year and this year.

I want to see if I can predict btc's price close again and make it 3 out of 3 years right. For 2017, btc will end above $1825. This thread will have over 1 million views.

Got 1000 ether at $8. My guess is year end, bitcoin will be 900+ and ether 25+.

Laugh5

Got some "hardware" to back my software from a few of my bitcoins I bought in '15.

JJG, we're fuckin rich.

This makes me sick to my goddamn stomach. I could have invested a few thousand in bitcoin in 2009, but who would do such a ridiculous fucking thing?

Nice work on the 5k ETH, the last 72 hours have been madness. Next week going to be another level. I'm already tired, China wakes up, Europe wakes up, East coast wakes up. On and on.

Funny thing is that article is 4 years old. 5000 BTC = 6.4 million-ish now.

And JJG has gone quiet once bitcoin broke 1200.

Maybe the less he talks, the better BTC does. (just kidding... nothing personal, haha)

I wonder how much legs this current move has. I'm guessing to around $1400.

SunW, are you in ETC as well as ETH? I think I missed the boat in ETH but ETC is around 15% of the price. Am I missing something?
