I see you are a veteran of Medellin . In your opinion how would one protect himself against such a attack ? What would be the best deterrent ? Get her ID , meet only in very public places . Do bars have video surveillance ? Is police helpful or is like Thailand where police cause more trouble than they fix ?
My above post was sarcastic. I got got in Bogota. I wasn't being careless at all. I wasn't doing anything nefarious. They just plain got my ass while I was minding my own business.

I don't know that you CAN do anything to stop them from getting you. It wasn't even hot girls that got me, it was two guys. And I was watching my beer. But it only takes a second for them to swap out your drink with their own. And once you're drugged, you're completely helpless. I don't care how big of a badass you are, you can't do anything for yourself.

I have no advice to stop it. If they want your shit and have the drug, they're gonna get you.

The best solution would be for the Colombian police to stop being such lazy pieces of shit and start investigating these assholes. But I guess that's asking a lot. The Colombian police are completely worthless shitbirds.

So a comparison of the accommodation cost should be made between the gringo areas of the two cities .
El Poblado vs Bessarabska Market

A simple comparison on Airbnb shows an average price of 104EUR for Medellin and 67EUR for Kiev . The minimum decent apartment will set you back 40EUR in Medellin and 25EUR in Kiev . So i calculate Kiev is aprox. 40% cheaper than Medellin for accommodation . Of course all of these without considering the actual quality of the apartments .

I stay last year in medellin for 3 months and 1 in kiev.
Kiev is cheaper, has less foreigners, but more richer people. so you will bang more in colombia, if you speak some basic spanish, kiev you have to spend more dineros for the girls, but their english should be higher than the colombian girls.
overall i would prefer medellin, since you can get nice girls from latincupid.
in central kiev i paid with some friends only 40 € per night for a 4-5 person apartment at lva tolstoi, poblado i shared a flat with a colombian guy and it was also very cheap with a pool and a sauna, but medellin will be a bit more expensive, cause newer building, sauna, pool and security.
in kiev you can walk around everywhere at any time, nothing will happen, medellin is 90 % of the area not safe, but i banged some putas from the casas in my apartment and also girls from manrique, santo domingo, comunas trece, but they didnt robbed or drugged me.

I can't speak spanish but i can understand some of it as i speak the fifth most spoken romance language. In reading I get about 80% .
In Kiev i played the "lost tourist" card for day game and it worked . The same thing in Colombia would be dangerous, I think.
Could online game be dangerous as well ? I get a lot of matches on Tinder with girls that look to good to be true . (this happens in Kiev as well but there is clear what they are selling)

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
a comparisson on Numbeo gave a surprisingly draw between Medellin and Kiev :

Index Medellin Kiev
Crime Index: 50.06 49.89
Safety Scale: 49.94 50.11

Probabbly overly discussed already on other forums/ threads :
If scopolamine is the perfect drug why don't they use it more ? How come most of the gringos get away un-spiked?
Why don't they export it ? Sounds a lot more valuable than cocaine.

of course scopolamine is real, which doesn't mean VICE videos are sensationalistic shit full of lies. Also scopolamine is used in pretty much all of Latin America, and the tree from where its taken grows everywhere, from Croatia to New Zealand.

There's some reality documentary type show on Netflix where guys go try to mine gems. I don't remember the name. But the first episode they go to Bogota to get emeralds. While they're in Bogota, they also try to see if scopolamine is a real thing.

They set up a hidden cam at a bar and the Gringo leaves his drink unattended. Nothing happens the first night. But the second night, a girl tries to get his ass. He goes back to his hotel room with her and then reveals that it's a TV show and she's been tricked. They interview her and she says "they" made her do it.

It was very interesting.

This Colombian uber-dawg even drinks his (scopolamine-laced?) coffee in a personalized mug, emblazoned with its own (dog) face on it... can you be a cooler dog than that? I bet he gets plenty of love, too!

Ahh yes. Scam City. Thanks for the link. I'm gonna watch it again and try to relive the experience that I can't remember.

And I'm getting on a plane tomorrow to go buy some of those emeralds.

I bet he even robbed himself and escaped on motorbike after getting out of the taxi, did some coke and used scopolamine drink as a chaser. Can't be more cool than that. Respect.

This guy talks a lot of his experience living in Medellin and Colombia in general. This story is unfortunately about his brother in law getting stabbed to death in Cartagena on a dance floor on Christmas this year for dancing with another guys girl. He talks here about dangers of being a player in Colombia. His vids are good stuff in general, especially if you have an interest in Colombia and the women.

I've seen this guy's youtubes. He's got some great videos. I didn't know about his bro-in-law.

I've had some experience with this same stuff in Colombia. I was in a tiny town called San Rafael having the time of my life. I was with some new friends that were young Chiva bike taxi drivers and they took me to a little roadside stand where everyone was drinking beer at 5am. There was a big tent and beer bottles all over. Hot girls everywhere.

I should have suspected something was awry because this girl that was WAY too hot for me started dancing with me. That's a genuine concern in Colombia because those crazy chicks will absolutely use you to get whatever they want, especially to get your ass beat to make someone jealous.

But this girl was like 22 (I'm not), and she was fucking amazing. It's not out of realm of possibility, though, that a super hot girl half your age in smalltown Colombia is interested. I kept looking around and no one was paying attention. One of the chiva bike drivers I was with even gave me a big smile and a thumbs up like, "YEAH!"

So after 30 minutes or so I start thinking it's not a scam and I should just dance with this girl who's humping my leg. And then the tallest Colombian I've ever seen comes up and picks a fight with me. I hit him with my beer bottle. His two friends pushed me into the highway and sprained my wrist. The Colombians I was with butted in and protected me.

And then I hauled ass running all the way back to my hotel.

So yeah. Girls in Colombia will use your ass. Be mindful of it.

Even with all these security issues is it still worth going to Medellin instead of Kiev for the girls ? or is it just a matter of personal taste ?

medellin is safer than brazil, and if you dont run around centro at night, you will be safe. i used uber taxis and you will be fine, even met girls from the comunas and went their by myself at daytime. just watch out when you go party for your drinks. and running around with an iphone out in centro. some easy rules you need to follow and you will be fine.
nothing happened to me in medellin for 3 months, and i went as a blond gringo to the stripclubs in centro at night and walked around, but 6 bastards from donbas tried to get into my apartment in lva tolstoi, so i had to call police and was paranoid for the rest of my trip.

I'm not so sure about using Uber in Colombia anymore, a gang of taxis in Bogota stopped an Uber car with two passengers in it, took everyone out (the passengers ran) then proceeded to burn the car. I wouldn't want to be in an Uber when something like that goes down: http://www.elpais.com.co/elpais/colombia...tas-bogota

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

I'll still take my chances with Uber over these shady ass cab drivers here. The Uber incident is crazy, but one out of how many previous millions of safe rides in Bogota? That's just my opinion. Easy Taxi's app isn't such a bad option either, as the taxi is at least trackable.

Anyone has experience with negotiating price with landlords?

Rented first month in apartment for about $500, he said that after that we will discuss in person rent for upcoming two months, it's fine looking apartment in Laureles but bit small, bedroom, separate kitchen and no living room what it seems from the photos. Any guidelines how low should I try to get him? $400/month?

Yes last time was in Medellin negotiated a apartment from 1600 to to 1300. Another from 1300 to 900 and then down to 300 after first month. This time from 2100 to 2000.

Depends a lot on how busy it is overall in the city and ocupancy rates. To get from 1300 to 300 I asked first about how much taxes, building fees, utilities ex were to landlord to find out their expenses. Then once I was already living there I offered to extend for just above the expense rate saying that I would move out on 24h notice if they found some one else to rent the place for more and that I would keep it cleen and let people see the place if they want. And also I was using 1 bedroom of 3 bedroom place and they could rent the other rooms seperatly. Neither of those ever happend. In jan its pretty busy rent wise and you have less levarage. Come march you can negotiate much harder in medellin till around jully when it picks up again.
