For the record the woman was 7 months pregnant when they were captured, which means she was roughly three months along when their "hiking" started. Furthermore there is doubt this was an actual kidnapping,it is more likely convert to Islam allowing himself to captured and traded for high value detainees. I read about this case in 2012 when they were originally "captured" and even then there were doubts about this whole situation. Who goes hiking in Afghanistan with a wife in her third trimester? Who dates a know Islamic fundamentalist from Egypt with known terror ties? Who gets "captured" by the Taliban and is allowed to have sex with their wife so she can have a second child? Radical Islamic fundamentalist sympathizers is what they appear to be to me, and I am not alone in that perception. I wish them the best but I do not believe they were kidnapped against their will while "hiking".

Came here to post this. These guys obviously joined the Taliban, they've probably been running their Payroll and Accounts department for the last 4 years (they too too nerdy to be fighters of any sort).

The practice of Islam during the Ottoman Empire was very pragmatic with extremely small pockets of fundamentalism. Generally there are very few examples in history of theocracies being able to take and hold any significant tracts of land, mostly because of their own infighting and civil unrest.
