Back to Food Blogging and the Educated Woman, I was flipping through The American Woman's Cookbook in bed last night, and besides discovering a potential psychedelic band name - The Irradiated Evaporated Milk Institute - I found an example of what the 1930's Educated Woman studied:

I'll encourage everyone to at least skim that paper, because it feels like something out of a parallel universe. They actually built a lab up in the mountains to test all the different baked goods they could make under different conditions. There's a level of seriousness and dedication to the project that's totally absent from Zuckerberg's nasty, snarky rantings.

It's a sign of how screwed up our culture is that the image of a female scientist building a "altitude cooking lab" to study the best way to bake treats under unusual conditions seems like some kind of ghastly parody, rather than the useful and important work it is. I'm sure the people living at these altitudes were genuinely for the information this paper brought them.

We've really regressed since the 30s, and it's pretty sad.

My comments on Donna's article:

1: I find it hilarious that for years (decades?) The Classics were derided by the left as not relevant anymore simply because they were written by “dead white men”, and even driven out of many universities and colleges long ago. No one, except those on the far left, ever even thought about them in that way as to why they wanted to read or not read The Classics. i.e. I wanted to read and study them because they ARE the foundation of Western Civilization, not because they were written by “dead white men” and would have want to read them no matter who or what group had written them, but to the ones who prescribe that everything is Identity Politics, that can’t be the reason. The far left remind me of the old 1920s/1930s/1940s Comintern cadres who though of everything in terms ‘class struggle’ and even college/university papers on economics had to have an appropriate amount of party slogans and phrases sprinkled throughout a paper in order to get a good grade.

2: I suspect that one of the reasons there is an almost hysteria for the SJWs at trying to ‘reclaim’ The Classics as their own, is that whatever they had been studying in its place, was not as good as The Classics. Even worse, I suspect, whatever else they were reading was of no importance what so ever, and was so bad when compared to The Classics, that even the most militant SJW could not justify it as being as important or of as valuable as The Classics.

3: I suspect that the SJW/far left realize that they are losing cultural arguments based on merit, reason and logic; and have opened themselves up to unbearable amounts of trolling when they try to preach or defend their ideology and someone else rolls out ‘The Classics’ against them. While many SJW have the hamster running full speed on the wheel to rationalize their view of the world, I suspect that even the most deluded ones are not strong enough to remain faithful to their ideologies in the face of a well reasoned presentation of a counter argument (or unmerciful trolling response) based on The Classics. (And then, and then he [cisgendered?] used logic and facts against my failed ideology and failed arguments! [and the SJW bursts into tears in her safe space])

4: I suspect it is kind of hard for SJW/far left to go on about “how bad white men are” when The Classics are around to be quoted from, at length, about human rights, the rule of law, due process, freedom of speech, etc. after they (SJW/far/ left) have tried to discredit The Classics. It must be particularly galling to the far left when any minority starts to quotes anything from The Classics!

5: I am reminded about how the whole men’s only clubs played out. First, men only clubs were bad and should not be allowed because they allowed men only to talk with men, and part of the argument is that some companies/institutions were making decisions in places that allowed only men, so women were at a disadvantage because they could not even go into the place. So then men only clubs disappeared, and even my local YMCA became coed. That was ok for a while, then some women decided they were only being judged on the basis of their looks (and looked terrible) and felt uncomfortable with men being around because they felt they were being judged, so then they had to have women only gyms, which was viewed as being good because it was for the benefit of women. Of course, a side effect of that, if carried to extreme, is that the coed gym would become men only again if all of the women went to a women only gym.

Donna seems to want women to reclaim The Classics, but I can not recall any instance, ever, were it would have been a great idea to start talking about The Classics with a woman, if I wanted her to stick around for any period of time. If anything, I would have only started a discussion if I was trying to drive off or discourage a woman from being interested in me.

Thinking about it, her running a food blog makes a lot of sense. They mustn't really love me") to resentment ("How dare they not appreciate my hard work!") to outright vindictiveness, ("It's their fault for having such uncultured palates!").

Now go back and read her "How To Give Support To A Friend Who Is Being Attacked On Twitter" post. That's the stage between when the polite after-party nips have become her swigging freely-from the bottle and searching the Pharmaceutical Cabinet in the bathroom for Mother's Little Helper, trying not to glimpse her runny-raccoon-mascara eyes in the mirror. As she takes the pill - briefly-questioning whether it is declasse to chase it down with the sherry before deciding she's too upset to care - she wonders, for not the first or the last time in her life, why, when she has wealth and privilege, she needs the tablets to function and why they never fill the void inside her, one that makes her wonder why she can never just be... well... happy?

Damn. She saw her eyes. The shame. Thoughts immediately turn to sugar. She wonders if there's any leftover desert, then heads back to the kitchen...

Something interesting though: reading between the lines of the 'Support' article, I can see how she's functionally giving her allies a step-by-step recipe to 'bake' her comfort unique to her specific taste. "These are the palatable ingredients... these are not."

The thought just occurred to me that apparently we have already gotten to his sister, and possibly the reason for her posting was an attempt to stop the whole Classics plus Red Pill ideology from spreading to the people around her and by extension, Mark also.

Mark must have some idea that things do not seem right. Examples of this are the fact that even with his billions, his wife is 'not what I would usually expect', to be. His attempts at grand gestures, like the contribution to the Newark School system, seems to fail. Even after his years in business, he seems to have no idea how to conduct himself or be taken as an industry titan, and STILL comes off as an ill at ease with himself teen. I also expect that he does have some idea that if FaceBook stopped working tomorrow, something else would take its place in the afternoon, where as if something the railroads of Vanderbuilt's Empire had stopped working, it would have been a disaster for the country. One interesting example of that time. One of Vanderbuilt's stock fights involved the major rail line into the city. To put pressure on the other side to settle, he closed access to a bridge over the Hudson river, forcing shippers to off load rail cars on one bank and then have to drag everything across the frozen river to another waiting rail line.

Essentially they check boxes like sexism, misogyny, Islamophobia, racism etc. Every classical piece of literature must be viewed via this marxist destructive viewpoint and then you go on to "debunking" other classics.

After more thought, I do believe that is the real reason for the effort to 'reclaim' The Classics by the far left. While I was not able to put it into words as good as you have done, what you have said is what they are really trying to do. The far left would basically reinterpret (deconstruct in your words) what The Classics meant, until they didn't mean anything anymore.

Of course, like all things the SJW does, it will fail in a most entertaining manner.

Who knew that the best way to win The Culture wars would be to study The Classics and then quote from them at length? (Extra points to reaching the point where you can quote in Latin or Greek to amazed and stunned SJWs).

My Scottish Grandmother's Christmas Trifle recipe:

1. Cook a jam sponge.
2. Cut it and drown the pieces in Brandy and sit for a couple of days.
3. Arrange it around the edges of the bowl, then place Jelly, Custard and sliced pears, peaches and mango inside the slices.
4. Top it all with handwhipped fresh cream. Not 'mock'!
5. Throw on some strawberries and shaved chocolate - I cheated here and used a Cadbury Flake, about as girl-friendly food as existed before Nutella became a thing.
6. After eating, don't drive anywhere for a few hours!



So easy to do, I threw this together whilst teaching my nephew to play Chess. (He's got potential, he's just not juggling the abstract moves enough steps ahead yet).

So easy to do, I made a low fat cream version for my elderly-neighbours at the same time.



Note the flat cream. I wondered if you could actually whip low-fat cream, and did a bunch of searching online. I checked out Quroa, Yahoo Answers and a few other sites whilst my Sister checked out Facebook. Modern Edumacated Women everywhere screamed that "it's impossible to whip low fat cream!", so I went ahead as is. It was only after I did that I wondered what The American Woman's Cookbook had to say on the matter.

You guessed it: "should you find yourself only having low-fat cream, simply add a teaspoon and a half of warm gelatine, and it will whip easily." Once again, Modernity loses out to the Average 1950's Housewife. Thanks for nothing, Facebook!

Bonus Toblerone Cheesecake with Crystallised Mint and Malteesers for the younger guests, since I've never met a child who likes Trifle. I'll admit to half-arsing this one, but at least it's not burnt.

Baking has a certain charm for me. There's something elemental about fire, flour, and water; had it ever since I asked myself "Why can't I do up my own pizza bases?" Love me some pizza base, fruitbread, and apple pies.

Friends gave me this for Christmas:



Some of it's a bit wanky, but there's a nice Stromboli loaf in there I want to give a crack. I haven't worked up the enthusiasm to go the full "ferment your own fucking yeast over 6 days" thing yet, but when I do I'll advise the results.

I've probably done more apple pies than anything else. I just use an ordinary recipe off taste.com, nothing fancy, though I recommend you double all the quantities so you get a decent thick pastry to work with.

16 green apples peeled and cored, toss with lemon juice to keep them white, drain off the lemon juice (or not if you like your pies a bit tart), heat it with sugar and unsalted butter, add ground cloves and ground cinnamon, stew that over 10 minutes, set aside to cool. I like to throw in sultanas -- the cinnamon and ground cloves tend to concentrate on the sultanas, it makes them taste like little spicy explosions when you get one.

While that's going on, make your dough, stick that in the fridge for an hour or so (don't leave it 3 hours like I did, it gets too fucking hard), out again, line a pie tray, in goes your filling, second sheet of pastry over that, set aside, sprinkle sugar, into the oven, 45 minutes, done.

When I tell people I did this from scratch they look at me like I'm some kind of miracle worker. This is basic shit, guys, give yourself an afternoon the first time round and anyone can do this.
