He was a photogenic and charismatic guy who knew how to create his own image - think of him with the cigars. This image is of a man whose masculinity you don't question. Unfortunately he applied his talents to something terrible. He achieved fame but not renown. He'll be a man scorned by history in all likelihood. An Ephialtes, not a Leonidas.

RE: Cuban TV: Fidel Castro Dead At 90
When I was a youngster I went to Cuba. I only went to Guantanamo Bay.

Interestingly, I remember driving around and passing this place called Camp Delta. I specifically recall asked ng my buddy "so what, is that a jail?" And him saying "looks like it." Followed by both of us agreeing that it didn't look too bad. Wow.

A fun fact about GITMO is that it is leased from the Cuban government. The Rent is only something like 5k a month, and has been for a long time. And it's a really large area.

Now, Castro, refused to ever cash the checks that the US sends for the rent. So GITMO is free. As poor as Cuba is, not only did he never raise the rent on that big ass base, he didn't even cash the check. Sad.

Aloha!

RE: Cuban TV: Fidel Castro Dead At 90
The people celebrating Castro's death to me are morally bankrupt as is anyone that celebrates the death of another and we are talking about a 90 year old man. It's kind of pathetic if that's what you need to boost yourself up.

A lot has been said about Castro however one of the great and principled men of our time, Nelson Mandela, who didn't for a moment flinch with respect to his support for Castro. Cuba was one of the only countries fighting for an end to the apartheid state.

Nelson Mandela in 1991

Quote:We have come here today recognizing our great debt to the Cuban people. What other country has such a history of selfless behavior as Cuba has shown for the people of Africa? How many countries benefit from Cuban health care professionals and educators? How many of these volunteers are now in Africa? What country has ever needed help from Cuba and has not received it? How many countries threatened by imperialism or fighting for their freedom have been able to count on the support of Cuba?

I was still in prison when I first heard of the massive help which the Cuban international forces were giving to the people of Angola. The help was of such a scale that it was difficult for us to believe it, when the Angolans were under attack by the combined forces of South Africa, the FALA [Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola] who were financed by the CIA, mercenaries, UNITA [National Union for the Total Independence of Angola], and Zaire in 1975.

In Africa we are used to being victims of countries that want to take from us our territory or overthrow our sovereignty. In African history there is not another instance where another people has stood up for one of ours. We also acknowledge that the action was carried out by the masses in Cuba and that those who fought and died in Angola are only a small portion of those who volunteered to go. To the Cuban people internationalism is not only a word but something which they have put into practice for the benefit of large sectors of mankind. We know that the Cuban forces were ready to retreat after driving back the invasion in 1975 but the continued aggressions of Pretoria did not allow them to do so. Your presence there and the reinforcements sent for the battle of Cuito Cuanavale has a historical meaning. The decisive defeat of the racist army in Cuito Cuanavale was a victory for all Africa. This victory in Cuito Cuanavale is what made it possible for Angola to enjoy peace and establish its
own sovereignty. The defeat of the racist army made it possible for the people of Namibia to achieve their independence.

I turned over some more thoughts on Castro's career and personal character, and made an article out of it. I thought that it might be good for us as men to reflect on the weaknesses and failures of character that can even lead well-intentioned men on the paths of ruin and wickedness:

Socialism is about fantasy. The fantasies of socialists will always trump the reality of its failures. Arguing with a socialist about socialism is like arguing with a smoker about smoking.

Your article reminded me of one of the things that puzzled me about why people were so gushing about Castro's regime. A 99% literacy rate is never to be sniffed at, but that's nothing to do with communism. Furthermore, what's the point if the best education in the world if you still end up dogshit poor all your life with no opportunity to advance?

I'm flabbergasted by all the Croatian leftists who are celebrating Castro "because he was like our Tito".

Wtf

As much as I don't like Yugoslavia and Tito's dictatorship with its many flaws, it's simply an appalling comparison.

Tito:
- Liberated our country from Nazis
- Built most of our country's infrastructure and lifted millions out of poverty
- Independent despite being adjacent to both the West and Soviet Union

Castro:
- Invaded Cuba from Mexico for fun & profit
- Ruined the country's infrastructure and caused mass poverty
- Soviet Union's puppet despite being thousands of miles away

Their comparison is like saying that Putin is the same as Kim Jong Un because both are subjected to western sanctions...

RE: Cuban TV: Fidel Castro Dead At 90
Some (disingenuous) people on this thread tried to link V. Putin to (global) communism (just because, out of nostalgia and a bit of romanticism tinged with sadness, V. Putin sent a few kind words to the Cuban government, on Fidel's death). But let me remind you that, concretely, the Russian federation, under Putin, has stopped sending money to Cuba. Like, completely stopped any financial or concrete help.
Also, some seem to forget that V. Putin's political party is United Russia, and that the Communist party is actually the main OPPOSITION party in Russia, competing with United Russia. Granted, it's controlled opposition in a way, but still, Communists technically are in the opposition in Russia. So, having Communists on this thread shouting their love to Fidel and... Putin, is quite ridiculous.

I have little respect for Fidel's regime. He tried to play the good guy benevolent dictator but couldn't keep himself from having political dissidents disappear in the night just like any other two-bit tyrant.

If only the CIA now butt the fuck out of tampering with the country's hopefully peaceful transfer to democracy (touch wood). Then Cuba might actually have a shoot. At first sight of any US interests being found supplying some side with resources however the commies will just gain an excuse for another 40 years of staying in power.

RE: Cuban TV: Fidel Castro Dead At 90
I can see we are getting various inputs and a healthy discussion about this individual.

In regards to comparisons between Yugoslavias Tito, I'd say they share some similarities and nothing more.
Just like the Miami Cubans and other Cubans outside were celebrating his death, when Tito died Croatians outside Yugo were also celebrating. They are also right leaning when it comes to politics. Very few leftists in the diaspora.

Now had Fidel stayed true to his mission and liberate Cubans (not liberate them from one regime into another) we'd be talking about him much differently.

Personally I have mixed feelings about him. When I compare the positives to the negatives with the probabilities had he not existed would the average Cuban person be better off? The statistics show that prior to Castro, the Batista regime and those before were not so glorious as well.

Let's compare the biggest islands in the Caribbean. Jamaica, Hispaniola (Haiti and DR) and Puerto Rico as PR is a Latin island.
1. Haiti is a lost cause. Poverty is rampant.
2. Puerto Rico. Vast unemployment and had it not been linked with the USA, according to Wikipedia, the PR receives $6.5 billion in aid per year from the states. Take that away, they will be hurting.
3. The DR. Better off than the aforementioned. Yet there is still a gap between those haves and have nots. Just like in Cuba, for example, many of the hotel workers live quite far from the resorts and make peanuts. Albeit Cubans make peanuts, Dominicans make cashews then. Is the average Dominican better off?
4. Jamaica. Toronto (Greater Toronto Area) has a large Jamaican diaspora. Just like other cities London England etc. Had the economy been better and chance to succeed existed many wouldn't had left. Still a dangerous place in some areas for tourists.

They all share similarities with Cuba. Beautiful beaches and women Wink some more than the others. Had Castro not existed would things have been vastly different for the average person? From Wages, quality of life, education, access to health care to safety who is better off?
I assume Cuba would be closer to Puerto Rico in terms of quality of life had Castro not existed because of its close proximity to the states. The foreign corporations would have paid off the ruling class to do business there (just like they did during Batistas time). As Cuba round have been tied to the US for foreign aid etc , the lobbyists would have gotten their input in and Cuban policies would have benefitted the outsiders not the Cuban people. The average Cuban I am sad to say would not have been better off.

Agree, but what else can you expect from leftists?

Castro and Tito do share some superficial similarities, however. Both were Commie dictators and sociopathic alpha-males who were pulling ass left and right. Both liked to smoke cigars, and both took power violently. I guess that's quite enough for Croatian leftists to declare them equal.

RE: Cuban TV: Fidel Castro Dead At 90
As a revolutionary and man who made his will become reality I have the utmost respect for him. Very few have the ability to put their money where their mouth is and fight for their own cause. He long outlived his enemies and more than ever showed that the greatest revenge is surviving and fighting another day in spite of the odds.

As a dictator and ruler. A poor miserable failure of a man and a complete wretch. Lead his people down the road to poverty and misery. He could manage the geopolitical minefield, but couldn't for the life of him provide his people with the loaf of bread and quality of life to live well/further what was built by his "revolution".

There's no such thing as blanket good and evil. And you can learn a lot from the strongest of our enemies.

@BassPlayaYo, i knew people who suffered enough because of that motherfucking SoB and his commie friends. Good ridance of that fricking dictators, and i really hope all the leftist scum here in South and Central America follow his steps like Chavez (dead).

Also, mandela is neither a role model. He was a bomb-planting terrorist. Check about the Umkhonto we Sizwe.
