Breaking story here, it looks like.

Cuban TV is reporting the death of Fidel Castro.

Regardless of what one may think of him, he was an important 20th century historical figure.

I've always been interested in the character and personalities of historical figures.

This would be a good place to debate or discuss his life, character, achievements, level of influence (or lack of influence) and a final verdict on his rule.

Can we now stop the Cuban refugee policy? They're coming by the boat loads and making the US of A broke. It's not the well educated anymore. It's rather the welfare queens who come to the US for a year, acquire legal status in the US, then immediately return to Cuba; proving that they are not escaping an authoritarian place but are rather economic migrants. The same niggas that scream "Castro is evil!!" are the same ones returning to see their family and funneling US Dollars to the Castro regime. If the Cuban government is a communist sponsor of terrorism, Cubans who return are essentially economic sponsors of communist terrorism.

He stepped down at the right time. He was an excellent public speaker, and had a charisma few men possess. His brother Raul was always the true mastermind behind the movement but he lacked what Fidel had in abundance. If you are fluent in Spanish I suggest you read Che Guevara's letter to Fidel.

Hated how he ruled his country, but you have to admire how he got to where he was. Him and a dozen or so educated, respected members of the upper-middle class decided to ditch it all and overthrow their government. They were decimated in their first engagement and spent months living off fruit and bugs in the jungle until, eventually, they rolled into Havana on the shoulders of la gente and proudly displayed a giant middle finger to the imperialists.

A Spanish professor of mine was a doctor and an officer in the Batista army and was sent up into the mountains in the Sierra Maestras to round up the rebels. He instead joined the rebellion and fought under Fidel until he was captured and sent to prison in Havana. His execution was set for January 06, 1959 but was saved when Batista fled on New Year's Eve. After his own friends became victims of post-revolutionary purges, he and his wife fled to Mexico and eventually to the US. Said he respected Fidel as a man (though he ended up hating his governing) but told me that Che was a real son of a bitch, a nasty fucker. Drank champagne through the night when he heard of his demise.

Yeah, one of the reasons Fidel and Che were so successful was their bravado and wit. "La historia me absolvera" is up there with MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail in terms of revolutionary literature.

There have been regular flights between both countries, not for tourism but you can actually get on a plane in MIA and land in Havana. The Cuban community has been trying to delay this because they want to get as many Cubans into the US.

As US-Cuban relations are improving, a mass migration is taking place right now. There are thousands of Cubans stranded in Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia demanding (yes, with that entitlement) access to Mexico so they can cross to a border point. Their rationale, "I'm not stealing from you, I'm just asking you to let me go to the border so I can go to the US"...totally ignoring the country's migration statues. Some stranded Cubans are asking the government to put them on a plane to Mexico instead of Cuba...yet they don't want to pay. The Colombian border patrol attempted to deport them and they actually had the audacity to stage a protest, a Colombian court told them that they could not protest because they are not citizens.

It's not your mom and pop using a Honda marine engine attached to a Plywood door and crossing the sea anymore, it's planned human trafficking that goes from Cuba, Ecuador, Colombia thru Central America to Mexico...then cross Mexico in bus/plane ride to the border, reach Laredo or Brownsville. All of that so that in 366 days they book a flight to return to Cuba. Not to mention the MIA crime scene is runned by Cubans, especially trucking thefts and smuggling stolen merchandise out of the country......along with healthcare fraud.

These busters know their time might run out anytime.

I remember back in '99 when he drew the ire of Bill Clinton after he publicly supported Serbia against the NATO imperialist aggression. Rule it out? Cubans in Miami DEFINITELY celebrated this overnight and will into the morning.

I can't fathom what it is like to grow up in Cuba, especially in the 'período especial' which started when I was 3 years old, or in the US with Cuban-born parents. I can only speak from the perspective of a Puerto Rican sharing the same flag with inverted colors.

Puerto Rico and Cuba took about as differing paths as possible for two nations so close to each other, with relation to the US. At a critical point in history in around the same time period, Fidel took over Cuba and set it on course to be staunchly and fiercely independent, even to the detriment of its people. Puerto Rico had the same choice, with Luís Muñoz Marín, but he sold out and essentially was bribed by the US, which set us on the wayward path to colonial status, and all that means for us, good and bad. The embargo that followed I think is summarized neatly in this little image, the amount of undersea internet cables that literally connects the world to each other.

Cubans have suffered a lot for this. Fidel's original intentions were probably good - he merely refused to be abused. Unfortunately, he became a brutal dictator that abused his own people as well.

But now, PR and Cuba are headed in, possibly, very different directions. The door is opening up for Cuba, and there are sure to be some more cables coming their way. While PR drowns in its own corruption, Cuba will be flooded with tourists interested in a bigger, objectively more beautiful, and 'authentic' experience. They can only go up from here. All because Cuba decided to not be a bitch. Cubans actually have a lot to be incredibly proud of, surviving as a staunchly self-sufficient nation against all odds. That counts for something, and as a Puerto Rican who struggles to name anything of prominence coming out of this island outside of Marc Anthony (ja), I envy that sense of legitimate pride. It's the reason I look up to Cubans, but many Cubans hate Puerto Ricans like me.

For that reason, even though I know I am completely ignorant of most of Fidel's atrocities and what Cubans have really had to go through, I'll always have a healthy admiration, and fear, for what he did. We'll never see one person control a country's destiny quite like he did again.

Cuba has advisers and military operatives in Syria to support President Assad fighting Western backed Islamic fundamentalist jihadist forces who are intent on blowing up the ME. Cuba is part of the Russian led spearhead against the forces of globalism and Wahabbi Islamism. Cuba is hated not only by the Right, but also globalists and Islamists.

As for Cubans dying young in poverty, Cuba has a life expectancy of 79.07 years according to the UN. It has a literacy rate of 99% and an infant child mortality rate of 5.8 which is lower than the US (6.2) and .1 above the EU average. Not bad for a country which has suffered under illegal US sanctions since 1960.

So next time when the 'Alt Right' call for the undermining of Cuba and condemn it's system of governance and stance in world affairs, remember you are directly calling for the weakening of the Russian led axis against US imperialism, the globalists, Soros and their Islamist proxies. The very same forces that you rail against on a daily basis.

So yes, Cuba is an ally not an enemy.

That Cuba is still aligned with the old anti-US former communist nations is of no relevance to me whatsoever.

Communism is a murderous cancer that needlessly consumed tens of millions of lives in the previous century, and if you're bitching about globalism then it's only sour grapes that the marxists sputtered out and the the glorious people's revolution failed where the globalists are currently succeeding.

The globalists merely rebranded communism and marched on, so Castro was only fighting the old guard in new suits.

Communism stands against all freedom. It deserves to go down in history as a great evil, along with anyone who was responsible for the millions of politically motivated murders that occurred under it.
