These types of threads are divisive. Women of all colours overreact all the time. The social media fallout is nothing new.

Who knows what the relevant conversations on the flight were verbatim, in the heat of the moment with a person looking close to death just a few feet away?

The flight attendant was probably wrong, as Ms Cross is more than capable of saving a life. Ob-gyn is a specialisation as far as i know, meaning she's a doctor already.

OP overlooked this fact, as did a few other posters.

Effectively, she can't practice as an ob-gyn without supervision. But she's a doctor nevertheless.

RE: Delta flight attendant accused of racism by physican in training on a flight
OBGYN in "training" should have just led with, "I'm a doctor" and left it at that. On a long flight, after being stressed, I would have said the same thing too nor do I expect some flight attendant to know or understand the differences in medical licensing.

Finally, the whole race angle is BS. It doesn't matter what color of the rainbow you are. When you're a minority in Rome, you do as the Romans do. That also means understanding that you might be required to produce your bonefides when someone else may not need to do as much.

I got the same treatment in Israel when I was walking through the Arab quarters, "Why's there a white guy here?" Hell I got the 10th degree going into the dome of the rock from some Palestinian guys for just being there.

I expected this and acted accordingly. I'd do the same thing in China, Japan, Mexico, etc. It's foolish to expect you'd be treated otherwise.

When I did my rotations I had people and staff routinely question why I was on the wards anytime I did not have my white coat on-this never happened to the white students or the Asian students. The flight attendant mad a bad call with her choice of words and demeanor, all she had to say is "are you a doctor" and wait for the affirmative response- then get out of the way so the physician could work.

It's a shame that the actions of many get put onto the ones that try to rise against the norm. However, until certain communities begin to police themselves better and stop making the news for destroying their own neighborhoods this type of extra checking will continue.

It's the cold reality of the situation.

RE: Delta flight attendant accused of racism by physican in training on a flight
So, basically you are saying that when a person is at risk of death, leaving him on the floor is better than letting a trained medical doctor (OBGYN in training) handle the case?

Do you know that the case was an emergency?

Do you know that the EMS (Emergency Medical Services) of so many countries are not actual doctors and they still respond to emergencies?

Do you know that she actually knows more than EMS guys that handles emergencies... you do know that right?

Even in your "great and mighty" USA, you do know that paramedics (your local name for EMS guys) are NOT actual doctors? (OPONU!!!)

You do know that after the white doctor started attending to the collapsed patient he and the flight attendant started asking for her input on the issue? ---- "supposedly if she knew nothing, why ask for her input?"

You do know that right (MUMU... OLOSHI BURUKU!!!)?

is the issue about: "female OBGYN's are universally the most obnoxious cunts" according to you....

or is the bias about her being a woman?

or is it about her being black?

and you say "treating"?.... your ignorance is appalling and nauseating!

When bias becomes too much logic flies out of the window!

it was not a case of "treating".... she was trying to handle an emergency... AS SIMPLE AS THAT!

it was NOT an outpatient/doctor's appointment scenario... this was a case of administer the basic form of first aid to revive the patient which she knows how to handle perfectly!!!

Quote:she wouldn't know shit and I wouldn't want her treating anyone in my family.

OBGYN resident doctor is a doctor, they are trained in a teaching hospital and he/she is fully capable to administer first-aid in a mid-flight emergency!

The woman is a OBGYN resident at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in Houston and according to you she only has "factual" knowledge to handle an emergency ---- like I said "bias throws logic out of the window!"

Quote: A beginning first year resident would have lots of factual, "book" knowledge but very little actual experience treating patients, so as any MD or hospital nurse could tell you, when it comes to handling any real emergency: yes, they don't know shit.

I am well acquainted with the career path of an OBGYN.

A beginning first year resident would have lots of factual, "book" knowledge but very little actual experience treating patients, so as any MD or hospital nurse could tell you, when it comes to handling any real emergency: yes, they don't know shit.

Note that I didn't bother to read the article and couldn't care less about the incident in question. Just correcting some of the what now appears to be trollish misinformation in the post I quoted.

Clam down. US standard for doctors are different compare to rest of the world. Chevalier De Seingalt is right, PGY-1 knows jack shit. Nearly all med students in the US gear their knowledge for taking the USMLEs. Only when we get to residency programs, that some people can get proper training in medicine. If Dr. Cross want to get some respect, she should just got out of her seat and deal with the passenger immediately. Plus there is not lot you can do on airplane with exception of basic first aid and BLS,

Mr Thersites | Mr Chevalier De Seingalt | Mr eradicator

1.) She is a 4th year OBGYN resident at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in Houston. She might not be fully licensed as an OBGYN but she is licensed to practice medicine.

2.) She was trying to administer basic first-aid because that is the only thing she can do.

3.) She was denied access to the person that needed help because she is a black female that looks young... nothing else [I am guessing doctors in USA are not supposed to be black females that look young...:-)].

4.) She could have been a GP doctor that practiced for 5 years and later decided to become an OBGYN.... BUT it wouldn't have mattered to the flight attendant because she does not fit the profile of what a doctor should look like.

5.) The person that needed help was very close to her seat so she naturally moved in to try and help BUT she was stopped from helping till the white male doctor showed up.

6.) Why was the white male doctor asking her for her input while dealing with emergency if she knows nothing?....

These are the facts devoid of emotional sentiments... any intelligent person would be able to reason it out for what it is.

This is my last comment on this thread.

RE: Delta flight attendant accused of racism by physican in training on a flight
I just was talking to a gynecologist (my vagina is throbbing) about this.

Interestingly, he is also a rated pilot.

Here's what he said:

If you are a doctor you don't just raise your hand and say "I'm a doctor! Look at meeeeeh!"

You hold up your medical license and say "I'm here to help." Or something similar.

The reason for this is because commercial flight crews are very well equipped to handle a variety of medical situations.

The second an emergency occurs, every major carrier contacts this company: http://www.medaire.com The flight attendants don't just walk around asking for doctors.

That company has in flight monitoring systems, and an on call doctor at their call center who tells the flight attendants what to do. They would be the ones to tell the crew to look for a doctor. Of course, they are going to want to see credentials.

Doctors don't just walk up to car accidents and say "I'm a doctor" they lead with their credential.

There's a video of our man Dr. Oz running up on a car accident, and everybody knows he's a doctor. He still would have shown his shit first.

Next this lady is gonna say the air Marshall got up and shot her, that would have been a story.

Aloha!

Seriously... did you know that or you pretended not to know just to bash her because she is a woman or black - which is it?

Being an OBGYN in training already makes her a qualified general practitioner or GP doctor (commonwealth countries like Nigeria use this term) meaning she has her Bachelor of Medicine degree...

You do know that right? Or your racist or gender bias doesn't allow you acknowledge that?

The woman in this case, is a 4th year resident and not licensed to practiced medicine. When the flight attendant asked her for credentials or a business card, she couldn't show any. Of course she was mad, and took to social media.

All airlines have to do this for legal reasons, not because they are racist. If they let anyone who was saying they were a doctor try to help someone with a medical emergency, that would open a pretty big can of worms. All airlines do this, as a few people mentioned, that isn't to say that their flight attendants can't be rude as fuck.

I shared the article for a couple of reasons, this particular event had a number of articles the past couple of days, but maybe
Quote:Which is it?

Seriously?.... like seriously?

OK, I'm racist.

Quote:In which country in the world does a person become a specialist doctor (OBGYN) without becoming and practising as a general practitioner or GP doctor first?

In case you bias can't allow you decode what I wrote - the black woman is even more qualified than your so-called "actual doctor" .... because she has both "basic" and "specialists" knowledge!

She may or may not have knowledge, but the flight attendants have to actually see some sort of proof of certification or at least a business card before they can let them help, that is to prevent lawsuits. Even if she had completed all of her training, and forgot her wallet which had her medical license, they still would not be able to let her look at the guy with the medical emergency.

Yea, she looks about 18, probably why the stewardess called her 'sweetie'. I'm not saying if there was or wasn't racism at play, but looking like a high schooler doesn't help.

I'm getting pissed the more I read this. I gotta stop.

Here's the good doctor interviewed by the new York times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/15/us/bla....html?_r=0

Notice how she couldn't get to phone, because she was delivering a baby. You go girl! #cuttinthecord

She's mad because the flight attendant "demanded" to see her credential.

So if the plane was crashing into a lake (Minnesota is land of 10000 of them) would she bitch on twitter that they demanded she put the floatation device on.

I hope they put this bitch on the no fly list.

Also, if the doctor isn't sitting in first class they suck at their job.

Like you and respect you Kona but here is what I have seen happen in real life. My father was a general practitioner and when we were flying back in the 1980's(on Eastern Airlines) a man on the flight started sweating profusely, grabbed his left arm, and said he was having extreme chest pain- He was suffering from an Myocardial Infarction. The stewardess asked if there was a Doctor on board and my father said yes and went into action , giving orders and demanding the on flight emergency kit. He showed no credentials, he just took control of the situation. we were nearing our destination so we were given priority landing and the EMTs were waiting, my father had to escort the patient to the hospital and sign the patient off to another doctor before he could come home(the law in Georgia back then was if you initiate care as a good Samaritan you cannot withdraw care until you release the Patient to a healthcare professional of the same level as yourself.)

Second situation- when I was on a flight a few months ago a guy went into analphylactic shock shortly after his meal.He was having trouble breathing and was in extreme distress. The stewardess asked if there was a doctor on board(I knew what to do but I am not a licensed doctor yet so I remained silent.) and a man in the back said yes and he promptly went to work-he got the planes medical kit ascertained that the problem began after the guy ate, surmised it was an allergic reaction, hit him with the epi pen and sat next to him for the remainder of the flight holding his head back to make sure his airway was clear. He did not show his credentials he just got to work. EMTs were waiting when we landed.

Most doctors do not carry a copy of their medical licence or hospital credentials, they likely just have a business card. Your medical licence is at home or in your office and your hospital credentials are with your work clothes.

The average doctor makes $170,000 a year and first class is a waste of money unless it is a free upgrade or someone else is paying for it. Still like and respect you Kona.

The above statement is incorrect.

A fourth year resident IS licensed to practice general medicine unsupervised after their 1st year is completed. Many second year residents moonlight to supplement their income this way. Every single second year resident ,even ones that just did a Transition Year Program have a license, a DEA number, and the ability to deal with General medical issues (deliver a baby, treat MI, secure an airway, administer anticoagulants, set a line , set a nasogastric tube, stitches,ect.). She is not a Board Certified OBY GYN because she has not completed her program and taken the Board Exam, but she is a licensed physician

A business card would have sufficed in this case(or any case), but Tamika Cross didn't have one of those either.

The woman in this case, is a 4th year resident and not licensed to practiced medicine. When the flight attendant asked her for credentials or a business card, she couldn't show any. Of course she was mad, and took to social media.

And all she had to do was show some sort of proof of this. A business card or some sort of certification.

Bro I do not know why you bother trying to convince some of these people otherwise. It's a waste of time. I've seen plenty of doctors jump into action without showing "papers." She does look young, but whatever, if she says she can help then let her help. I've seen PGY3s and 4s do some amazing shit in times of emergencies without an attending present. Even when one was there, they just stood back and let the PGY4s handle it.

Some people love to claim otherwise, in the face of logic, when many have no idea what they are talking about. Anyway bro, good luck with match this year. I'm sure you'll be fine, unless you're aiming for one of the lifestyle specialties then get those prayer beads out haha.

Thanks for the posts, Atlanta Man, Tayo, and everyone here who has actual experience in the field of medicine.

Sometimes I think this board is so hell bent on fighting against political correctness and SJW left wing nonsense that it pushes the "There's no racism at all ever" argument too hard, even in issues where race is very likely a factor.

Race is not a factor here. Its airline protocol.

I agree that all to often the attitude that there is no such thing as racism exists. In this case that's just not true.
