Is it best to find a less competitive, narrow niche or is it fine to compete with others in a wider space?

You want to find a niche that has passionate consumers, which means products are already being sold in that niche. A niche with no competition is not the niche you want to enter.

General rule of thumb:

- FB Audience > 500,000
- Google trend search shows rising, or consistent relevancy
- Google Keyword planner shows >50,000/month
- Sub-niche pages have good engagement (I.E if your niche is hot yoga, pages that people in that niche like should have good engagement (follower/like ratio etc..)).

If your niche fits that criteria, you're golden.

Hey WeekendCasanova,

Thanks for your response.. have some followup questions if that's cool with you:

1. does the free plus shipping model still work these days? what are your thoughts on this fb ad tactic?

2. i have several different niche ideas and am thinking of setting them all up and then drop the ones that don't sell/convert.. is this the approach you started out with in the beginning or your journey?

3. you mentioned another app that's better than Oberlo, are you using that exclusively? im thinking of setting up with Oberlo first plus are there any other apps you recommend these days ie abadon cart app

It's a great model, if the item has a perceived value around your selling price, and the audience is passionate about the item/niche.

Yes.

I use Oberlo, but the 'ShopifiedApp' is very powerful, just a tad more expensive.

PM sent regarding other apps.

RE: Dropshipping With Oberlo
I just finished setting up my e -store. I signed up in Instagram and created a fb page for my store. Set up some fb ads. I will be waiting to see the traffic. I just have a few more questions :

1) I read that buying FB likes can be bad in the long term. Did this affect your business and how many likes is ok? Don't fb track any fake likes?
2)I am not active in Instagram. Hence, I don't think I can find any customers through it. I am doing it more through word and mouth asking my friends to spread it out.Is there any other effective marketing method for this type of business? I was thinking about youtube channels and SEO. Have any of you tried anything else?

Do customers not complain about long shipping times from China?

I also checked some products on AliExpress and margins were slim, much slimmer than bulk buying from AliBaba, though I get the idea of proof of concept.

Overall I like this idea for flipping the shops, not retaining them, I think a Shopify showing positive ROI can give quite a good price to the right buyer, better than an affiliate site.

Agreed. Also interesting that a lot of these ecom guys move onto creating their own SaaS platforms after being successful at internet marketing.

I don't get this whole idea of dropshipping. Why don't people go to aliexpress directly to buy their things?

Because you do the job for them : propose products that they like/got interest in/need and gather them in one store with a nice price.
All they have to do is click to buy ! Easy as ABC.

Yes and that's the whole point that's holding me back of trying ecom via shopify and oberlo.
Following Dan's current serie leave me disappointed : he uses lots of platforms (or tools) that are not free (not a problem per se) and for which he has interest in. To me that screems scam.
What do you think about that ? Legit or not legit ?

I was thinking the same. If guys like Dan and the amazing seller guy are doing so amazing in e-commerce, why don't they simply do more of that and make even more money?

Why bother trying to make money offering training and promoting platforms from which they get a kickback?

They give some good info and they deserve to make cash from sharing their knowledge, but there's no denying the cognitive dissonance.

Whenever these "gurus" start to promote SaaS tools, ebooks or other digital products it is usually a sign that a certain method is drying out and they are not able to make money of the method itself anymore.

I have no interest myself in the Aliexpress, Shopify model but reading a few online marketing blogs and forum it seems like that everyone is doing this model right now which means that Facebook CPCs must have been skyrocketing over the past few months.

I can be wrong with my assessment but that's just my two cents about "gurus" selling products rather than making Millions doing the method they say they make Millions with.

This is incorrect.

The reason you see them selling educational products, is because the educational business model is simply superior.

Let's take Dan for example. He sells a 'Monthly Mastermind', at roughly $50/month (discounted). His private FB group for this Mastermind consists of 4,500 members, each paying 50/month + more for other special services etc...

$225,000/month - and if you want to be generous, let's drop it to $150,000.

The market isn't saturated enough to make this business model not feasible, it's just that education is a better business model. It's as simple as that.

I started a mens jewelry store a few weeks ago, and have eclipsed $300/day, selling unbranded, mens jewelry. I did this store as a case study - it's a ridiculously easy way to make money if you put in the time, and effort.

Saying dropshipping is drying out, or saturated, is silly - you're not selling the method to consumers, you're selling the products. And with the Shopified app, you have access to millions upon millions of new products. Saturation isn't even remotely close.

The educational business model = trading time for (a lot of) money, whereas e-commerce is (more) scaleable. At least in theory.

Are you saying it's a better business model simply because it makes more money (for Dan), or is there something structural?

Is that your net after-tax income?

Love the data sheet and the knowledge you're dropping. Keep it coming.

I've been retail dropshipping for ten years, many many different methods.

Many Ebay marketplaces, many Amazon marketplaces, it's the perfect location independent job.

I wrote something years ago that went viral, I blabbed too much.

You can make big money, it's a case if how much time you want to put into it. But once you know what you are doing you are pretty much set for life.

RE: Dropshipping With Oberlo
I got this message in my business manager a couple of weeks ago.

Please review 1 of your ad accounts.
There was some unusual activity on one or more of your ad accounts, so we’re protecting them by stopping your ads. We’ll start your ads again using your current balance once you verify your accounts with us.

I filled out their appeal and have had no luck getting the ads restarted. I'm fairly certain I did nothing to violate their terms of service. Just some pictures of tshirts and watches.

Has anyone here dealt with this?

Big money means different things to different people. Can you give us an idea of your average monthly after-tax income over the past ten years? How steady has it been?

Well like I said it's very much a case of you get out what you put in. When I first started out I was happy to make $1k a month, that was in a cheap country. As I grew then the admin became more and more and it was driving me a bit crazy. I was selling too much cheap stuff for little margin and end up getting into conversations with customers about their order for a $3 book

These days I am clearing let's say always more than $4k a month, sometimes a lot higher and working maybe 4 or 5 hours a day. It could be a lot more if I was prepared to work harder.

I have never had a website or tried to even make one, i'm sure it could work but i'm just lazy with my current methods

Amazon is a huge earner, you can make a lot of money by being the most expensive seller rather than the cheapest! You can sell a $50 item for $150

Amazon does give you a lot of grief though, even more than Ebay

Once you know how Amazon, Ebay and Paypal tick then you're almost bulletproof.

So to re-iterate, I think it's a great location independent job drop shipping retail, you don't need a lot of money or time investment to start and there's loads of info online to get someone started
