I'm really into dnb, have been for years.
I remember how my friends thought i was a loser going to underground raves back in '97...i was in my teens at the time.

I kinda hate how "EDM" went mainstream and brought people who are only into because they wanna be seen as "cool" or in".
I don't care if that sounded hipster, its true. As of late you get girls who just come to do drugs and attention whore and guys trying to prey on the girls doing drugs.
It used to about enjoying the music and the great vibes with other like minded people who also were chill. Drugs or not people were all there to enjoy the music.

I like pendulum's early stuff when it was just the 2 original members before they became a "band".
Their 1st Album "Hold your Colour" dragged me back in to the genre.
They reformed and made knife party which isn't dnb anymore but it might be worth a listen.

This blew my mind first time i heard it.




Still Grey i consider the gold standard for liquid dnb

These were ok releases, but I kind of expected more from Random Movement. Check this out. Quite recent as well. He's definitely a stone cold veteran with the sharp basslines, clean vocals, and great blending/mastering. Funky.

I'll admit I am with you on the Random Movement release. It is very minimal and he can do a lot better (Waterlogged for example) but it satisfied my need for Jazz.

I had not heard that one yet, really getting a Jamiroquai vibe from it though.

I'm just now catching up on the latest stuff from Scientific Wax.

Tim Reaper's latest choon is just plain filthy. He really really outdid himself with this. Next time I ever get a chance to talk to him, I gotta give him major props. The intro pads are ridiculous.





Any old school heads check out Equinox's latest 94/95 style heat. This tune is dark around 3:21. I love me some oldskool hardcore\darkcore.





This tune is bliss and pure niceness, like that Sunchase tune Burt posted on those intro pads, then gets ruff with the jungle bizness.





Then my favorite DnB artist Nebula, drops something different than his usual. He gets really filthy on this one. Check out that nasty bassline. The science is very hard on this one.

Great thread with a ton of new music for me to check out. I've been listening to DNB/Jungle since I first heard it at an underground artist collective run by some friends in Denver in the late 90's. I subscribe to di.fm and stream various sub-genres frequently while at work or doing chores around the house. The dubstep channel can be good for background music when I'm getting my BDSM on with freaky chicks.

Dubstep wise I'm not really into the whole Skrillex robot on robot foreplay music but the Chord Marauder / 2 step (Future Garage) stuff is right up my street when I'm looking to kick back.

I also grew up with jungle, although I wouldn't listen to it now. Strange how it just died so quickly when there was so much love for it. I suppose as garage started gaining popularity (was played in, and largely grew out of second rooms at drum and bass raves), people just moved on as it was more accessible and fun than what jungle had become. Bits of jungle from that era still got played in the garage scene (Heartless would often play segments for example), and even today dancehall soundsystems here will often play a bit and people love it, but there's no real scene behind it like there was. Same story with garage.

Remarc and DJ Ed Rush say it best. Jungle was too repetitive in the drum loops and sounds. My own observation is that samples and the equipment were limited up to a point, but when the technology got drastically better, newer sounds and styles took the space of Jungle. Reggae bits seemed to get out of style after a while too.

Jungle/hardcore is still the original sound that preceded Drum and Bass proper. From there on it was just eventual that Techno -> Trance\House take over from there. Now it's Dubstep and just House for the most part dominating the sound market.

Modern Jungle is still badass, I think it was Remarc that said he can't believe Equinox and others are still messing with it, but with all the new tech, they can still make an old sound still sound awesome.

Another thing I forgot to mention earlier is that if you think about raves and drugs in a way, extasy/pills took overtook weed in a big way. I personally think that had a good bit to do with Jungle and Ragga Jungle taking a hit in popularity.

Ecstasy had already been massive here before Jungle emerged, and pills were pretty big in the Jungle scene so I'm not sure that would have had a lot to do with it (along with weed and often crack).

I agree that improvements in technology most likely lead to a lot of changes in the music, and while I'd say that the music certainly evolved technically, what's good for serious listening isn't necessarily good for creating a scene that draws the people. The new sound also wasn't very female friendly, while UK Garage was, and people pretty much moved over to UK Garage, especially black people (I remember by the late 90's Drum and Bass raves in my city were probably 95% white, while UK Garage raves were 95% black). Garage didn't last long either though.

I accept full responsibility for this transgression. My exposure to LTJ is actually only limited to handful of his most popular releases.

He's one of the founding fathers of the Liquid / Intelligent sound and I should have done my research and explored his works, I will accept the 50 lashes.

Interesting insight I had not known, thanks for sharing this.

Garage is still around today but it is incredibly underground and the only way to really find it is by scouring the Dubstep / Future Garage forums.

Artist's like Burial and Phaeleh though have done a considerable amount of work in reviving the 2step movement which I am all for. It's always nice to have well loved genre's brought back from the dead and to see how the sound has evolved since it's last appearance.

Here are some of my favorite choice LTJ Bukem cuts:

Demon's Theme might be his best one IMO









This one was lightyears ahead of it's time for 1993. When the pads kick in ~1:20, your cheeks will flush with blood. The bass kicks in at 2:50 and it's crazy too.






All of his music was waaaay ahead of the time. Stuff is still dope even today, never gets old.

To be honest, I feel like the time has passed for Garage. When you think that at it's peak (98 - 2000) there were hundreds of great releases per week that you'd tune in to hear on pirate radio, whereas now there might be a handful, it just doesn't feel the same and there's no real excitement around it. Without a real scene it also just seems kind of lost and nostalgic, like guitar bands trying to reproduce the post punk sound of the 80's. I'm also not the biggest fan of the 2-step sound anymore - I was always more into the 4x4 Todd Edwards, Anthill Mob, etc., kind of sound, although the 2-step stuff was fun at the time.

I'm not surprised Garage died the way it did - as it broke mainstream and there were opportunities to make money, people started selling out, and anybody with any taste just moved on. It also became too MC led and almost unrecognisable from what it was (this lead to Grime I believe, and then Dubstep splintered off from it - I'm not too familiar with anything that happened post 2000 though as I moved back towards following House and Techno, as well as Dancehall which I'd also always had an interest in). London and the UK hasn't really come up with anything on the same scale since - Grime, Dubstep, and UK Funky never really got off the ground as scenes compared to Garage and Jungle (Dubstep is the only one of those that I had any interest in). Deep Tech / House seems to be growing which I don't mind, but I'd rather just listen to Detroit / Chicago / Berlin producers.

All those tracks are gorgeous, I really regret not diving deeper into his music now. I've been listening to Horizons a ton over the last few days, Keep em' coming.

Travelled into central London the other day and managed to grab a few of his releases on Vinyl for a lot cheaper than I was expecting

Thanks for chiming in, I completely forgot to mention that style of Liquid that you had posted.

I agree with it being a very innovative and underrated Genre. The diversity of the producers and their musical backgrounds is something that I haven't really seen in other Genre's.
