OTTAWA - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau manhandled a male Conservative MP, told another group of MPs to “get the f--- out of his way”, and elbowed a female New Democrat — all of it on the floor of the House of Commons Wednesday evening, prompting one of the most bizarre parliamentary melees in decades.

Trudeau, within minutes of the incident, said sorry.

“I completely apologize,” Trudeau told the House. “It was not my intention to hurt anyone.”

Trudeau had grabbed Gord Brown, the Conservative MP, and frog-marched him down the aisle of the House of Commons and, in doing so, appeared to accidentally elbow NDP MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau’s chest with such force that she missed a subsequent vote.

While there have been rare incidents over the last few decades of MPs physically threatening other MPs, there is no precedent for a Canadian prime minister grabbing an opposition MP, let alone accidentally elbowing an opposition MP with such force that a vote had to be missed.

The incident began when Trudeau was apparently frustrated that opposition MPs were delaying a controversial vote which would have given Trudeau’s government unprecedented powers to force through its physician-assisted death legislation.

Votes in the House of Commons normally happen after the whips from the government and opposition parties present themselves in front of the Speaker’s chair.

But Brown, the Conservative whip, appeared to be in no hurry to move through a group of NDP MPs who were milling about at the back of the chamber.

Trudeau, apparently frustrated at the delay, got out of his seat, and strode through the crowd of NDP MPs. NDP MP Tracey Ramsay said Trudeau told the MPs to “Get the f--- out of the way,” then grabbed Brown by the elbow and forced him forward, knocking Brosseau in the process.

A few minutes later, Trudeau returned to the stunned group of MPs apparently in an attempt to find Brosseau and personally apologize to her but she had left the chamber.

At that point, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair confronted Trudeau and can be clearly seen on House of Commons video within a few feet of the prime minister yelling at him and calling him “pathetic.”

The two men had to be separated and Trudeau eventually returned to his seat.

At that point, Trudeau explained why he had moved towards the NDP MPs in the first place.

“The opposition whip seemed to be impeded with his progress. In so doing, I admit I came into physical contact with a number of members.”

Shortly after this, Brosseau, clearly distraught, returned and told the House: “I was elbowed in the chest by the prime minister and then I had to leave. It was overwhelming.”

Trudeau rose again to apologize directly to Brosseau.

“What we saw is something I’ve never seen. It’s unacceptable. It’s undignified,” Conservative MP Gerard Deltell told the House of Commons.

Rough day for Justin Trudeau! The male Feminist PM is being criticized by both Conservatives and New Democrats after he accidentally elbowed an NDP (leftist) MP in her boobs during an altercation in the House of Commons.

Can't help to notice how diverse that parliament is both racially and sexually, looks more like a circus, was subconsciously expecting a clown sitting there among guys with turbans, various dresses, pink suits etc.

The galactic senate from Star Wars prequel trilogy looked more solid.

About the incident - each of these hundreds of people receive huge salaries for an hour of their work from taxpayers money and what they discuss is some insignificant accident and hurt feelings. I also don't think that a person who needs to cry and is unable to work because of getting accidentally elbowed is fit to take a high position in society. This all looked like a infantile children's quarrel in family with one child accusing other and parents taking sides instead of teaching children to calm down. This is the level people descend with huge numbers of females in politics. Soon nothing of importance will have enough time to be discussed, because all the time will be spent on arguing who stepped on who's foot, who was insensitive and who hurt who's feelings.

Actually, he had no choice but to apologize - his behaviour was so far past the line of acceptable parliamentary conduct that you'd need a telescope to find it. If he hadn't the speaker probably would have had no choice but to suspend him from Parliament until he apologized.

His elbow to Brosseau may have got the majority of the press, but the more serious offence was grabbing Gord Brown, the Tory Whip and dragging him forward. You simply don't lay hands on another Member of Parliament.

All the rules around maintaining parliamentary decorum are about fostering an atmosphere where issues can be debated without threat of violence or intimidation of the minority by the majority. For example, the opposing benches are by tradition set "two swords lengths" apart to keep the possibility of physical altercations to a minimum. The job of the Speaker of the House is to maintain order and keep things civil - that is why he has the power to punish MPs for use of "unparliamentary language", censor ministers of the crown for refusing to answer question etc. In the 149 years the Canadian Parliament has been in existence, this is the first incident of this type. That it involves the Prime Minister is even more shocking.

Leaving aside the gravity of his conduct, Trudeau has been cultivating this image of happy, "sunny ways" transparent government. This episode showed a side of him that blows that narrative out of the water. He had no choice but to apologize to try and put this to bed.

Most people know that Trudeau is a petulant child. This is the guy that has sticks his tongue out at opposition MPs.

His general conduct here was pretty bad - walking over and doing what he did - but the elbowing incident is something about nothing. It was clearly an accident. The female MP has probably been accidentally bumped harder in a busy line or just walking down the street. I don't have to agree with many of Trudeau's views to accept that this has been blown out of proportion.

That said, I didn't mind seeing the always affirming male feminist get the SJW style outrage. It would have been funny to see him called a misogynist - too bad.

It looks as if the NDP set up a "picket" of the lane, probably in collaboration with the Tory MP in order to stage a delay of proceedings. Troolander's reaction tells me that this is not the first time this has taken place. As someone said above, the NDP are disgraceful for trying to blow this out of proportion and I think they were poised and ready to do this the whole time. Troolander got set up. This looks like it was a trap and he took the bait. Having said that... I don't feel sorry for him like I don't feel sorry for Jian Ghomeshi. Troolander would be the FIRST one to use such disingenuous tactics against HIS opponents because it's THE CURRENT YEAR so... fuck him. Live by feminism, die by feminism.

That said, this should be such a non-event. Clearly his contact with Brosseau was completely accidental

I despise the feminist programming that we are forced to live under. The Conservative Whip isn't complaining. Would this even be a blip on the radar if Brosseau were a male MP?

Watching the leader of my country, even if I don't like him, be forced to prostrate himself (twice) to serve some feminist double-standard imperative was physically disgusting for me.

It's because Canada's citizens regardless of race are more involved in civic life. I'm always surprised how diverse nations like America and Brazil have such monolithic looking parliaments, it's as if half the country simply doesn't give a hoot who they vote for, or they simply don't show up at local elections. People here actually get involved, vote, and volunteer at the local levels. The result is a far more diverse parliament, city wards, local councils, and overall representation. If anything, it's Americans that should probably learn a thing or two. Instead of looting Ferguson Missouri and burning the poor place to the ground, involvement in local politics would've saved many people a whole lot of grief and would've nipped the problems at the bud.

If people don't show up, they only have themselves to blame later.

As for Trudeau, apologizing (twice) is going to cost him political capital. Should've brushed it off and moved on. No-one other than his opponents are really outraged about this. People throw down fists in parliaments from time to time, and he did something far more benign.

Great post Djemba, it is something that most people outside Canada just don't get. People all over Canada work together for their communities and end up electing MLA's from the community to represent them. From bull dykes to Sikh kings, everyone has an ear to talk to here.

My parents are here visiting at the moment and one thing that they can't stand is people blindly complaining. Their attitude; Get out and do something about it then! An argument is fine, stating opinions and all that goes along with it- even fighting- is fine. But sitting on the internet and bitching and signing 1000 petitions is not something their generation is used to.

Those pictures were "disrespectful to women." Those pictures turned out to be pics of the MP and his girlfriend on vacation at a beach and she was wearing a bikini. That's a perfect example of the mentality of the NDP.

But yes, watching Trudeau squirm because other SJW's are triggered by his failure to keep to orthodox narrative is very pleasing.
