Daesh (داعش) is the Arabic acronym of the al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham (the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant), the original name of a group which split off from Qaeda. Later in 2014 its name was changed to the Islamic State or the Caliphate.
The Toronto Star favored the old long name to be used in the news reports of the paper effective of March 3, 2016.
Michael Cooke, Toronto Star’s editor-in-chief, described the Islamic State/ Caliphate/ Daesh as “multinational gang of killers and rapists” who “have no legitimacy as a state” explaining that the “name change helps emphasize that.”
Olivia Ward, Toronto Star’s Foreign Affairs Reporter, elaborated on the new policy: “That’s because the criminal gang that has murdered, raped and pillaged its way across the Middle East, while sending sycophants to slaughter civilians abroad, is neither Islamic nor an internationally recognized state.”
The Star’s position which denies any connection between the Islamic State to Islam goes in line with the official policy of the Liberal government.
“The Toronto Star has shown tremendous leadership in being the first major Canadian media organization to take such a definitive stand about how it refers to the terrorist group,” said Amira Elghawaby, NCCM’s Communications Director. “We call on other media outlets and independent journalists to consider adopting the term Daesh as well. This may lead the way for parliamentarians to do the same.”
On February 23, 2016, Toronto Star posted Elghawaby’s op-ed article entitled “Want to hurt the Islamic State? Call it something else.” The subtitle read: “How politicians and media refer to the terrorist group may actually help in countering its destructive narratives.”
Arguing that the Islamic State does not represent Islam, Elghawaby said that referring to the Islamic State (ISIS) as an “Islamic” entity emboldens ISIS’ objective to drive a wedge between Western societies and Muslims. She also suggested that there is a correlation between the language use to describe the Islamic State and the increasing number of reports of anti-Muslim attacks and comments. The following are excerpts of her article:
“Besides, such terminology winds up impacting the millions of Muslim citizens who are just as horrified by these terrorists as anyone. “Terms like ‘Islamic terrorism,’ ‘Islamist terrorism,’ ‘Jihadism’ and ‘Islamofascism’ succeed only in conflating terrorism with mainstream Islam, thereby casting all Muslims as terrorists or potential terrorists,” points out the RCMP report.
“And this may actually help “Daesh” achieve its stated aim of driving a wedge between Western societies and their Muslim citizens. We already see an almost immediate spike in anti-Muslim attacks and incidents reported to police, the media, and to organizations like ours following any terrorist attack by any group which purports to have a link to Islam. Never mind the virulently anti-Muslim comments on chat boards and throughout social media that typically ensues in the wake of these types of events.”
NCCM revealed that the NCCM’s Stronger Together Chair Mohammed Hashim also met with the Toronto Star’s publisher John Cruickshank to encourage the change.
TorontoMuslims.com, a subsidiary of Dawanet, Canadian Muslim outreach network, wrote on its Facebook page (March 4, 2016):

America didn't bounce back. Many in their 30's and older realize that 9/11 was the day the USA and the American dream died. The economy has been a disaster every since. The laws have increased greatly and the freedom has greatly decreased. The only thing holding the USA up, for the time being, is the fact we are the USA and was the only country to really survive WWII largely unscathed and are still floating on that lucky event. And we will not be able to float on that much longer.

If something like that happens in Canada, they will come running to the USA so fast their heads will spin. And even faster with a low class self esteem loser like Trudeau. And if the USA keeps voting in their own low class self esteem losers like Trudeau, such as Bernie or Hillary or Obama, then there is an increased chance that when Canada comes calling the USA can do nothing to help.

Feminism is a cancer and Trudeau is part of that growing cancer.

Most people don't realize how left of centre Canada really is. The Conservatives in 2008 election won a majority with 34% of the popular vote. That's right! The other 66% of voters voted for left wing parties.

It's been like this in Canada for a long time, whether in immigrant heavy cities, or not. Whether East, or West.

American liberals look to Canada with dreamy longing, while American conservatives look on with disgust and contempt.

Trudeau's approval ratings are through the roof right now. I'll wait 4 years and see where this goes. We're stuck with the current parliament no matter what happens.

You're dead right. Urban Canadians love the Liberal party and the legacy of socialist Trudeau Sr., and rural Canadians worship Tommy the commie Douglas. They're both different flavours of left and true Canadian conservatives end up getting out of Canada so they can go make some real money somewhere else. The ones that can't get out just become alcoholics. Same phenomenon takes place in Scotland. White English Canadians are mostly descended from the Scots (yours truly is no exception - currently plotting my escape to Trump's Great America - cuz I don't drink - yet).

Similarly, Canadian Conservatives look to America with dreamy longing (even more so if the Democrats lose the next election), while Canadian Liberals look on with disgust and contempt.

But even the conservative party in Canada is more left than the American Democrats. The last Canadian election really offered the worst variety of candidates ever. Choose between 10,000 or 25,000 refugees by 2016; child care benefits vs. family tax credits, etc. Canada doesn't really have a true conservative party. Your choice of beverage is either coffee ... or coffee: either with one cream one sugar, or the other with two cream two sugar.

As much as I like Rebel Media as it help balances the left-biased MSM in Canada, they do sometimes go heavy on the hyperbole too to stir up emotions. I think the extrapolation Ezra makes in the video is a bit farfetched — I don't think we're following in the footsteps of Cyprus (at least not yet).

This proposal was presented in the Progressive Conservative budget initially, so it is not the workings of Trudeau. Garth Turner just wrote a blog piece about it.

Like I mentioned a few posts ago, I personally think the difference between PC and Liberal is not much and both are already left of the U.S. democratic party. Aside from this particular budget proposal, this Liberal government is swinging much more left and socialist than Harper and Chretien/Martin, and Canada will be economically ruined via their other proposals.

I see this quote everywhere. Like the fucker is Ghandi or something, but he just has the emotions of a teenage girl. If you followed his campaign and rise in the parliament you will see this is actually a lot of his platform. Pander to the extremely emotional.

You don't think this would happen in Canada? What do you predict will happen when the Canadian real estate bubble bursts? Here in america, that event caused bank failure and a literal bail out. America also has many many banks so there were small bank casualties that also didn't take down the whole system.

Canada has 4? major banks, any one of those falling is a collapse. I am fully confident they would bail in on a mortgage bubble bursting.

I was born in Canada, and this policy is ridiculous. Let me tell you why.

If you are a Syrian refugee, or come from pretty much any Muslim country and come to Canada to make your own law, they let you in, and welcome you with baskets of gifts like they did to all Syrian refugees. Nothing easier.

Back in 2013, when I tried to bring my Thai girl and her mother for a 1-month vacation in Canada, we applied for a visa.
Her parents' situation: Married for 30 years, 4 children, posess 3 houses, 4 cars, 2 startup businesses, and her mother works for the government since the last 25 years. They both had USD $200,000 in the bank.
Verdict: Denied, "you did not show enough proof of ties to your home country, therefore I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay".
I then called my bank and filed a chargeback for "fraud" to get my visa fees back, as this was clearly a fraud. And it got resolved in my favor.

At the same time, we applied for a visa to USA, since we wanted to go on a trip to New York. They asked for a couple of papers, but it got approved. So we flew to New York, spent a few days there. Then we drove to the border to seek admission anyway. They denied her, and stuck a 1-year exclusion order down her throat. When returning to USA from the border, we were followed by 2 US Border Patrol cars to make sure that there would be no smuggling attempt. I got pulled over and extensively questioned twice. She ultimately flew back to Thailand, and I drove back to Canada.

At the border, when re-entering Canada lone, I got searched and questioned for 4 hours. I had the RCMP car waiting for me there, and when I went on my way, the RCMP, along with 2 provincial police cars, followed me for 30 minutes to make sure that I wouldn't try to bring her in the country.

When I was getting questioned at the border, I saw a car with 4 muslim girls inside. Neither showed their face, and they just went through. And all refugees, who bring nothing to the country and just want to live like their terrorist country, just enter Canada and start breeding like bedbugs. Meanwhile, I don't know how much time the police wasted to make sure that I wouldn't bring my girlfriend for Christmas.

And then, we wonder why innocent people die in bombings.

That type of shit makes my blood boil.

Who makes this type of call? Is it endemic from the day they start training to the day they take full pension? I have to wonder.

At the tiny crossing where I do business there is a East Indian female agent. I can usually see a slight outline of her pony tail through the two way glass and can often choose my lane accordingly. But sometimes I get her anyway and then I know I will be there a while.

The last time another East Indian agent (male) called me over in the office with a dirty look on his face, handed my my car keys back and apologized. No explanation, nothing. I see her with a pissed off look on her face in an office as I leave.

I tell the American guy I do business with this story. This 83 year old man gets red in the face and tells me he finally made a formal complaint against her as she treats him with the worst kind of criminal treatment. Last time, when he went through with his great grandkids and great-great grandsons she did the same bullshit and he lost it. Demanded to see the officer in charge and would not leave until they explained to him what the problem with him was.

Of course no explanation, nothing. He now drives to a further border crossing that is busier.

When we were talking about this the headlines in all the major papers were talking about how the Great Trudeau was streamlining the effort to get in the Muslims. We could only shake our heads that someone, somewhere, in a highly influential position was undermining Canada's legacy of peace and the understanding that we just want to be left the fuck alone.
