The average US middle-class income is $46,000/year. It's my understanding very few 4 year degree graduates in the Phil are making that kind of money. Instead they are waiting tables and working in call centers for a fraction of that.

When I went to an ENT doctor I paid 500 pesos for the visit and 350 pesos for follow-ups. Let's say he sees 10 people a day/ 250 days a year. That's 1.25 million pesos/year (about $27,000 USD) and that's for a special doctor.

You really cannot compare middle-class income in the US and Philippines. Makati and BGC is on par with US standards. The further you move away from these places the cheaper it gets. You can rent a house for less than $100 a month in Pasig or QC. Living expenses are very cheap compared to the US, specially medical bills as you pointed out. At $27K a year, you could be living in a nice condo with a full time maid/cook and driver.

Women aside, the cost difference in living expenses between the US and third world countries is a major driver for deciding whether to move or not.

Good post Calwinston.

We should really do a master thread on the Philippines with some data crunching, or links to the numerous excellent posts by members.

With over 120 pages on this thread and a bunch of other very good threads, it's getting hard to find more specific information.

Thanks anyway, I'll do a report of how it went.

Yeah no way is anyone renting a decent house in a place that isn't a crime infested barrio at 4k. I know girls who live in shared boarding rooms who pay 2.5k in Quezon City. Pasig is probably even higher.

I'd say 15k minimum for something decent in a place where you wont get jacked every night.

If you want a good neighborhood (ie. alabang) then it shoots up to U.S. type rental cost per month and beyond.

Here is your link: https://www.olx.ph/real-estate/ Keep in mind that the locals typically do not use websites to buy/rent houses/condo. Its word of mouth.

Price really varies depending on where you want to live and the size of the place. If your a foreigner, you definitely will not want to live in places that rents for P4K/month.

I believe we were talking about where an average middle class filipino would live. People that live in these neighborhood typically know each other pretty well. Getting jacked is usually not a problem and only happens to walled-in houses that has something of value. I was merely pointing out that the cost of living is fairly inexpensive.

Which 4 universities?

UPD, DLSU, UST, and Ateneo. Pretty much the vast majority of landowners send their kid to DLSU or Ateneo. To clarify, I am talking not straight out of college, more like a couple years experience + lower end of the middle class definition of the US.

Yeah there's very few jobs that would pay 48,000 annually even before taxes.

Quality of girls on dating sites seems to have declined noticeably since last year. I'm using the same photo I had since I first started using the websites like 10 months ago. Used to get a crazy amount of chats, messages, etc, often from decent looking or even semi hot girls. Now such girls are quite rare.

Feels like Ph is rapidly changing. Must be all the new money?

It's worth noting that buying a car has helped me get taken more seriously by the hotter girls. Seems like they all want a guy who has a (nice) car. That's not really an option for a guy stopping by for two weeks, although you could rent one I guess.

I want to take her to a cool island for 10 days. Hoping for serene nature and to meet locals on a less beaten path.

Hard to go wrong with Bohol. It's a two hour ferry away from Cebu, 800 pesos round trip if I remember right. I've been twice. Plenty of water sport type shit to do on Alona beach which caters to tourists and a few different smaller beaches on the same little Panglao island which mostly cater to locals. Make sure to check out the Bohol Bee Farm in the center of Panglao, your girl will probably love it. Good food and ridiculously good homemade ice cream. If you wanna go "off the beaten path" in Bohol you'll have to escape the tourist bubble, just chat up some locals in Tagbilaran when you arrive and they'll be glad to steer you in the right direction.

Millions of girls who are fair skinned? Please tell me where your coming up with that statistic. Cause I've been in QC and the "real" manila I see maybe 5% who are pale if that. In the province that pretty much drops to 1%. BGC is literally one of the most wealthy areas in the entire country and maybe 30% of the foot traffic is fair skin.

Metro Manila has almost 12 million people. What is 5 to 30% of 12 million? It's hundreds of thousands to a million, which is what I said. That's using your own estimates.

20 to 40% of Filipinos have partial Chinese ancestry.

And as we both agree, these girls are often found in the same places. They are not hard to find. One place may have 0%, another may have 50%. Go to the one with 50%, if that's what you're looking for.

There is no debate that East Asian countries have more pale girls. Like I said, if all you care about is complexion, go for it. But I think most guys look for more in a girl than her skin color.

Guys who prefer a more mixed/mestiza look will find plenty of fair skinned Filipinas who look distinctly different than an East Asian.

Quote:Like I said before, I've been in SM Aura where I saw 80%+ WNB (including the old ladies). That says something. Granted lots of the foot traffic are the real "middle class" (aka poor in the US) who are window shopping and splurging to eat at the food court and take selfies on the roof since it is located right next to market market.

Compared to the rest of the places in the Philippines you could even classify Market Market as relatively middle/high end. Certainly not a lower class shopping mall. So the video is correct not the "average" filipina. The average is much worse, maybe take a shot from a random town in the province.

You're missing the point. If the "average" girl is hotter at the mall right across the street, why not just walk over? Why even worry about the girls at the lower end mall in the first place?

We are not comparing Market Market to every mall in the Philippines. We are comparing it to the one directly NEXT DOOR.

If you had a job making $100k, would it matter to you that the average income in your city was $50k? Or would you simply enjoy your $100k job?

I just don't get it. If you want pale, middle class girls, go where the pale, middle class girls go and avoid the other places. Go to this mall instead of that one.

One guys says, "there are more pale, non-poor girls here than I could ever hope to sleep with or even talk to". The other guy says, "there are more dark, ugly girls here than attractive, therefore it's a bad place".

It's really that simple. Get this... I've never actually been to Market Market or SM Aura. Yet I could already tell you with certainty (which you just confirmed) which has the better looking girls.

How could I do that? Because the trends are very distinct and carry over to every major city.

Quote:Also considering greenbelt/bgc cover maybe 0.1% of the land in the Philippines, I say its highly valid 99.9% of the Philippines has poor infrastructure, air pollution, corruption, safety issues, etc.

BGC / Makati is NOT middle class. It is where the 1% live. Maybe middle class in the american sense. Middle class you can argue is Pasig and QC, at least for Metro Manila. Yes there are millions of middle class citizens in Manila... which are making poverty US wages.

I'm just giving a second thought from someone who lives and works here, instead of adding to the hype train. Everyone keeps going to greenbelt and then extrapolates their opinions on the country from living within the 0.1% of the country which is actually 1st world. Granted everyone who can afford it, including myself, wisely keeps in the bubble, but that doesn't change the fact that 95% of Manila is a plain 3rd world dump hole.

I've lived in the Philippines for over two years and almost none of that was in Manila, man. When I was in Manila, I didn't stay in Makati or BGC either.

Again, why does it matter if you don't like 95% of the country if you're living in the 5% that you do? I just don't get that mentality.

How does it affect you? Just don't go there.

Quote:Put it this way, in a country of 100 million how the hell is it possible that most jobs paying US middle class salaries go to graduates from the same 4 universities, whose class size maybe tops 10,000 total if that per year.

Thoughtgypsy broke this down literally a couple pages ago, and others have discussed it in the past.

Middle class in the US is not the same as middle class in the Philippines. Even if we were to compare incomes directly, completely ignoring purchasing power parity, $48,000 would be the median HOUSEHOLD income in the US. Yet you are focusing on individual incomes, while ignoring the fact that the average household is almost twice as large as the US (2.6 vs. 4.6).

What we are talking about here is a standard of living. A "middle class" Filipino is one who lives in a decent house, can afford taxis or a decent car, can afford to go out to eat and take vacations, etc. They're not rich, but they have a decent life. There are many, man Filipinos like this.

You're talking about 4 universities, yet there are something like 20 universities in Metro Manila alone where the tuition is $2k+ (dollars) per year. Most of those students are going to be middle to upper class.

There are also like 5 Ateneos and many other prestigious universities around Manila and the country that you didn't name.

You're also not including the number of Filipinos who own their own business. You're also not including all of the people who work and live abroad. You're also not including the multitude of other jobs that pay a decent wage based on standard of living.

Even girls who work in call centers can afford a decent standard of living, as long as their paycheck is not supporting their entire family.

Quote:There is room in a 120+ page thread for different opinions. Yours is different then mine, that's what the thread is for. By all means post how nice this place is, after all its your opinion.

Never did I say "how nice" it is. I even said the average girl is not attractive. The country has plenty of problems. Yet there are ways to minimize those problems, as I mentioned.

I just like to keep things in perspective, is all.

It doesn't matter where I am, I am always going to be saying: What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages? Are the disadvantages as bad as I think? Is there a way I can minimize the disadvantages and optimize the advantages?

In the case of the Philippines, minimizing the disadvantage is as easy as walking across the street to a different mall. Or leaving your house at low traffic times. Or living in a different condo or area. Or learning a few simple Tagalog words.

If you don't like the country, more power to you. But I see so many guys here who simply refuse to make even the minimum amount of effort to get the most out of their experience. They'd rather complain about their problems then apply simple solutions to alleviate them.

I don't see how that helps anyone. And locals pick up on it.

What exactly do you mean by "sophisticated?"I find young, high-end Filipinas pretty similar to their Western counterparts. Just as addicted to digital validation, just as many beta orbiters. Main differences are that they're far more family-oriented and infinitely more status-conscious than Western chicks. Game discretely when around their friends with the exception being if it's just her and her gay BFF.

I don't know what the occasion is but Cebu is absolutely teeming with Japanese chicks the last couple days. At least 10 of 'em at my gym tonight and I didn't approach a single one, feeling like a bitch. Hopefully will redeem myself later. My standard game is pretty low-energy so I'm shit at engaging groups and in this case it's actually amplified because I feel like the language barrier + group dynamic forces me to run clown game which I fucking hate. I need a J girl in my life tonight.

Because of safety, right? When I was there, some of the girls I met wanted to do zipline and other adventure type sports. In my head I could just picture the story, "American guy dies in zipline accident after improperly secured equipment."

I went ziplining in the Philippines, and obviously I didn't die.

But it wasn't without a moment of unnecessary anxiety. Both myself and the girl I was with went on the ziplines, and we did not make it all the way to the end. Just before reaching the end, we stalled and then actually slid backwards about 100 meters. We were literally dangling helplessly about 200 feet over shallow water and rocks, while the pinoys climbed backwards like monkeys on the wire to fetch us and pull us in. You couldn't help but look down.

You listed a search engine and not specific listings. I seriously have never heard of an entire house renting for that cheap in Quezon City. Especially not middle class.

Unless you're talking about a slum shack in a shanty town where you can "squat" in with your family after paying some local gang a protection fee.

How is it possible to rent an entire house for 4k when shared boarding rooms are 2-3k.

Keep in mind you might not be reading the listings right. There are rent to own properties out there that advertise as super low 4-8k a month but you are essentially putting down a huge down payment (50%+) of the properties sale value and then paying off the balance + interest in installments like a loan.

I met an older American guy in Davao that is married to a young Filipina and he said the house he was renting was 5,000 pesos per month. Unfortunately I didn't get to see it but he said it was small but in great condition. I don't want to list the exact location but it was 6 km from SM Ecoland, 9 km from Roxas Ave. As mentioned by Oneeyedjack, you are not going to see that on any web site. You also probably won't even get close to that deal unless you have a local arrange things. Once they see they got a foreigner hooked the price will instantly skyrocket. You also probably won't find anything like that near Manila.

A guy on another forum claimed he was renting a house for 2k/month. Secret deals, right? Secret deals. You just have to know someone. You gotta have connections. BS.

I've rented 2 different houses here, 50k and 37k / month. Went to look at over ten others. Almost every house had been rented previously by a foreigner.

Point is, house owners are artificially inflating their rent because they know the OFWs, and Koreans/Japs will pay. Why would a Filipino rent to you for 10k when they can rent it to someone else for 30k? This is why you see a 5,000 sqft house that takes $50k to construct sell for $500k, and why you see large apartments or villas in Makati going for 200k to 300k php / month rent.

The absolute best deal I've seen so far is a 7 bedroom mansion with swimming pool for 50k/month, 1 year contract. Called the guy the same day the ad was posted. Some Korean guy had already snapped it up.

If its for sale or for rent on the web, then you do not have the best price. If there are two or three people between you and the seller, then you do not have the best price. We really are not talking about the same residential areas. At 7 bedrooms, your talking high end. Btw, in some areas (like Alabang) the high end housing market is over saturated that prices have started to go down or are moving to rentals.

Why would someone rent a place below market price? Because its not always driven by money or profit. Sometimes, its because of relationships or circumstance. A friend is renting a condo in Makati way below market price because the owner was about to leave the country and didn't want to leave the place empty. Sometimes, the difference between P5K and P10K or even P20K is so minuscule that its not a big deal. The owner gives it away at the lowest price point because it makes them feel good that they are helping someone.

If you are from the Philippines or have lived there long enough, you would know that relationships is how it works. You get to play God mode if you have the right connections.

@Enigma you make great points.

You have satellite schools, but its imperial Manila so those grads will never make it to "US middle class" or upper class here.

I don't hate this country, otherwise I wouldn't set up shop here. Great, hard workers (as long as you filter hard and push them). Where else in the world can you get labor at a fraction of the cost of the US who speak great English.

For girls though I don't recommend this place at all, since the 7's here have more princess complex then other east asian countries due to the massive beta bucks being thrown around. Essentially the point I was making.

I was doing it raw dog previously with her when we started dating, but after getting scared once, I stopped. I would first need to get her tested to think about it. Anyone know a good place to do that around Makati area?
