No, he didn't deserve it, in the same way that women who dress like sluts don't deserve to be raped.
No one deserves to be raped for clothing choice, or hit for word selection.
The point is that there are bad people out there, who think a completely different way, and it is up to the rest of us to identify them and deal with them intelligently.

It wasn't a punch it was an elbow, which only makes it that much more brutal of a knock out. If I had to guess the guy in red shirt probably trained some Muay Thai or MMA. If you look at the two, he's already in a fighting stance with his left foot forward, while the hipster is standing in a neutral position with his hands behind his back, (probably one of the worst positions you can be in for a street fight). That said I don't think he deserved to be attacked like that regardless of whether he was being a douche and telling the guy "fuck you."
I agree that being hit that hard was too much, but it goes to show that younger people are becoming increasingly detached from reality. It's like that old saying, "might makes right", fairness has nothing to do with it. It's this same idea that's behind warning people not to go to bad areas. Ultimately, going to a bad area doesn't mean you deserve to get robbed or assaulted, but you got to understand that morality is a luxury, and there's certain self-preservation measures that one should take. Some people talk to people like this guy in the video trying to be edgy, not mindful of the fact that there is actually an edge to go over.
You have to be really coddled and socially unaware to not realize the guy was in fighting position.
Body language observations are very textbook here. The big guy leaning forward, tense neck, not moving at all, basically demonstrating clearly he took his stand and will fight to keep it. The other guy hands behind back, is usually a power move, often seen among CEOs and such among lower employees. It basically says 'look how secure I am that I dare to expose my chest without defense'. Problem is this guy was not among loyal employees

That was gratifying. Hopefully as technology progresses these types of clips will be available in HD. This was a golden lesson that for all the gloss of civilization, true moral authority and personal courage can only be realised when a person is willing and capable of acting violently to uphold their principles. These virtues, to be genuine, must come from a man who recognises his own strengths and limitations, and in full knowledge of those facts, sets out upon a course of action that he knows may ultimately get him killed, accepting that certain principles must be defended even in the face of overwhelming odds.
This little arsewipe allowed his own hubris, and his delusions of adequacy, to lead him to a situation that he had no true understanding of. I hope, should he prove capable of introspection, he has come to the crushing realisation that his freedoms exist precisely because the men he so readily derides stand ready to do violence to uphold the civilization that allows him his softness. If he has not learned that lesson, then I hope next time he gets a proper beating, not just a clip round the ear like that.
I don't believe this was disproportionate violence. The guy talked a lot of shit, refused to take the out, acted like a smug little cunt, which is a red rag to a bull, and got popped in the mouth for it. The world would be a better place if this still happened more regularly. That said, a lot of guys who were more familiar with violence than our hero in the current case would probably have seen this as the kind of situation where slapping this little punk across the face like a little bitch would have had an equally sobering effect, with less risk of subsequent legal ramifications. You have to judge the situation right of course, a mere size disparity could leave you very dead if you make the wrong decision. The camp hipster though is always a receptive target for a bit of light discipline that reminds him of what deep down he already knows, that he is a little bitch and can be treated as such if he doesn't stay mindful of his place.

Especially with the hipsters and only weapon is snark and they spend hours daily practicing. If that shit didn't know that he talking to a time bomb. A time bomb that was doing his best to end the conversation and walk away, then shithead got himself a good education and didn't need to go to college to get it.

Maybe it wasn't pure impulse. I know plenty of hard bastards who have a simple code of treating others with respect, and not tolerating any disrespect towards themselves as a result. You can argue whether it is sensible given the possible legal ramifications, but it doesn't make it impulsive or particularly animalistic. It is just straightforward application of a very simple principle.
As far as the idea of 'putting the guy down in front of his mates', that is just a terrible idea always. Either you aren't bothered and you should walk, or you are bothered and you're fighting. Name calling is neither one thing or the other, and is just an excuse for you to act tough in the hope you can win without fighting.

This. I don't condone escalating to violence quickly but there's a point in the disrespect spectrum where trying to "out-wit" a guy disrespecting you starts looking less like cleverness and more like cowardice. Ultimately, talk is cheap, action is everything.

If you want to see some proof of this, try going to an outlaw biker party. They're some of the most polite people you'll ever meet.
In america maybe, in the canadian city I lived in bikers would sucker punch people in bars. I mean literally go to shake someone's hand and then smash them in the face while their hand was outstretched. If some college kid spilled their beer, the spill-ee would start a fight with the spiller while the rest of the crew would form an outward facing circle to keep the bouncers from getting in. These guys were in and out of jail all the time and the cops would put 2 officers on them at night to follow them from bar to bar.
In america, I have seen alot of bikers and they don't seem to be getting to stupid trouble and are often working in the establishments they frequent as well, behind the bar and/or as security.
In this example, there might be a few other dynamics at play. I've seen fights break out at MMA events, I'm not saying ALL the people are polite, but in general, compared to a typical night at a bar, these people are less rude as a whole. There's a difference between rudeness and capacity for violence. You can very much have one without the other.

He went straight to violence? They were talking and the violence came in a single hit and he walked off.
Just going to put this here though, just so you understand.
Prison officers in the UK have or had this small baton which was roughly 8 inches in length and pretty dense. Not enough to clobber someone like a bat but enough to be useful.
Most people think they were used for clobbering some errant prisoner, wrong. It is a mere tool to snap a prisoner back to reality by poking him with it in the solar plexus or upper chest area.
This guy checked the smart mouth because his attitude was to go up to someone big and full of anger and stand there like he was untouchable. Perhaps in future hipster dude will not do that and it may well save his life.

Being a "bigger man" has been hijacked, such as "man up" to serve others, in this case to allow groups of people who'd otherwise be disadvantaged in a fight to act like shit heads with impunity. No, you shouldn't knock out everyone that disrespects you, context is key, as is severity. Like Chris Rock says, "why go to jail because someone smudged your Puma".
As a kid, I was told not to hit back even if I was hit. You know what happened? More kids hit me until I flipped out and shoved one down a hallway. People respond to incentives and repercussions. Most aren't inherently humane, no matter how long they can hold a philosophical discussion.

RE: Never let your guard down
At first I thought the guy didn't deserve to get hit, but upon further review I think he had it coming. Here are the reasons why I think so:
1) From the dialog it seems the hipster may have started it all. It looks like he works out and maybe that carries him too far in hipster circles.
2) The hipster was trying to simultaneously defend his actions while at the same time one-upping the guy with some kind of pseudo-debate, slight of words bullshit . When you do that you are making the decision to engage, not diffuse. The hipster is continuing to run up on him "all buck" like for no good reason.
3) The hipster did all this in front of the baseball guys girl. When you embarrass a guy in front of his girl you back that guy into a corner. He did it in the bar, and then he did it again when he said, "Fuck Off". What is the baseball guy supposed to do after that without looking weak to everyone, especially his girl? The hipster backed him into a corner.
In my experience, the guys most likely to snap and put you down quick are the quiet ones. They don't yell, and they don't debate for long. They calmly say, "I'm going to do this and you do that." If you don't comply, it's very quickly your ass. These guys have little patience and don't suffer fools gladly, and their patience diminishes exponentially with every drink. Sometimes to the point where his friends start to feel un-safe around him so they bail for the night.
So, if I were the Judge I would dismiss the assault charges but issue a citation for droopy pants and wearing a hat backwards. Grow up and dress like a man already.
