Not even original. She stole the idea of wearing a dildo on stage from a now-obscure German punk rocker named Nina Hagen. In fact, this whole look seems taken from both Hagen and Grace Jones, circa 1977-78.

I can't find any photos of Hagen on the Web with her dildo on stage. But I have a collection of old rock mags and can say for a fact that an old Creem magazine circa 1980 has several photos of Hagen looking like this. There is also a reference to it here.

It really bothers me when people take ideas from the demi-monde and then use them for commercial purposes. Hagen's music and persona was truly bizarre art crowd stuff, not commercial product wrapped in faux "outrage."

I thought Hagen was the shit when I was 12. Strangely, by the end of the 80's she was churning out commercialish-dance pop and ended up sounding like Betty Boo.
