My sister was doing her dishes and told me not to step on her ipad while I was passing by.

"Oh, what its there for?" I asked.

"I am about to do some yoga." She responded. She likes to listen to music while doing yoga.

"Oh your going to do some yogurt exercises?" (I have a compulsive habit for creating weird nicknames for everything).

"Yeah."

"Praise to Buddha."

"What?"

"Praise to Buddha and the Hungry Buddhist." I replied.

"Is that the name of a band?"

"No. Why?"

"That is a great name for a band."

It is weird how all these connections came together. When I thought of Yoga, I thought of Buddha. Then when I thought of Buddha, I thought of a Buddhist, Krillin from dragonball z.



Then a weird moment from dragonball z abridged popped up in my head.

Just start at 9:00





Does anyone make these weird connections with things? All of these ideas came up randomly yet are connected some how from one thing to another.

So yoga is from India.
So is Buddhism.
Krillin from Dragonball Z is a Buddhist.
A parody of Dragonball Z creates an episode with Krillin saying he is a hungry Buddhist.

I can't think of any good examples off the top of my head - but I know exactly what you're talking about.

My theory is that sometimes your brain just works faster than you can consciously process and comes to conclusions through the subconscious, drawing from data that you've absorbed over your life. With the random examples, it seems that at best you can try to explain how it works through post hoc rationalization.

A better way to understand, I think, though - is to look at say the example of a firefighter.

So in essence - what I am saying is that I think what is happening is your brain makes does all the hard work through your subconscious and gives you an answer, leading you to be unable to consciously explain how you arrived at said answer.

I do this a lot too. I like to play with words, create nicknames, invent new words, phrases.

Look up on it as a good thing. You like words and have verbal inclinations. Some people see numbers and mathematics everywhere, and some see words and phrases.

Cultivate your strengths, minimize your weaknesses.

PG, this kind of somewhat compulsive punning and free association is a form of mild OCD. While it's not the worst thing in the world, it is basically useless and distracting; it can also be a device that the mildly to moderately anxious use to channel and control their anxiety. The buzz of punning and free association both corresponds to and distracts from the inner buzz of the anxious brain.

At some point you may want to make an effort to clamp down on this habit and severely restrict it. It may be a bit difficult at first but after a little while you can turn off this essentially useless machinery and both you and the people you interact with will be better off for it. You can have a more enjoyable and fruitful conversation in every way when one of the sides is not constantly being distracted, and distracting the other, by mildly compulsive wordplay. And to the extent that this habit is the expression of an underlying anxiety, going against it will profitably confuse and subvert some pathways in the brain and may contribute to reducing the anxiety over time.

When I was a much younger man, I had a form of this habit -- not exactly punning, but a certain slightly compulsive relentless wit, which I was quite skilled at (something that did not make it any less useless). A good older friend pointed this out to me and advised me to cut it out, and I did so, almost from one day to the next. This change has served me very well in every way.

Polymath, your description basically describes my primary avenue to observing and understanding the world, except I would never say random stuff aloud.

I Myres Briggs test as an INFJ which is 1% of the population for men. A gift and a curse.

I view my life as a series of two dimensional planes stacked atop of one another. They're infinite in width, breadth and number.

They're in very loose chronological order and I have a weak concept of when each plane actually happened in relation to time. i.e. I'll have a very strong memory of something in the past, but I couldn't tell you if I was 6 years old or 12 years old when it happened.

Each plane is extremely rich in detail regarding my thoughts, feelings and perceptions at that particular time. Especially details about people I have met and how they made me feel.

At the present time, on the latest plane, when confronted with a problem I look back perpendicularly through all the planes as if they were transparent. My subconscious intuition aligns seemingly random shit on various planes into a laser beam and spits out an answer based on the combination of what I see when I look through them.

The curse, since it's feeling and emotion based, I'm not suited to the hard logic and mathematical problem solving stuff that is synonymous with masculinity (though I've trained myself to do it and am now very good).

The gift comes in dealing with people since relationships and human psychology is almost totally emotion based and I can subconsciously remember details of every interaction I've had with everyone I've met.

The difference between this and what I do is that I do it without thinking and I definitely don't say it out loud. It's in the very back of my conscious thaught.

Theres an old geezer at work who prides himself on being the biggest player on the english language. Always yapping to himself, will walk away from you mid sentence and keep talking. Constant stupid punny jokes that seem more like an invasion of my headspace than humour.

I laughed at one of them the other day and his new thing is "My jokes use to go right over Sooths head but now he gets them".

He doesn't realise I miss his jokes because I'm not listening to a single thing he's saying.

DBZ was like heroin to me as a kid. Thanks for the topic, it reminded me that I hadn't seen the new Dragon Ball z movie with Frieza. After watching said movie I found out there is a new series of Dragon ball.
