Still working in the oil sands. No more overtime and bonuses aren't as big as they used to be but there haven't been salary cuts or major layoffs... yet. Just trying to keep my head down and get through this.

All mining is down majorly. If I lose this job I'll probably not even bother looking for another right now and move to poosy paradise for a few years till things pick back up

In all seriousness I'm hoping I can find one rig company in all of Nisku to take me as a leasehand. Otherwise maybe I'll look into work on pipeline construction, as I've heard they are supposed to be starting up on a few projects. Anyone else hear of anything? What the hell is everyone else doing?

I'm still working. Down from 60 hr/week doing field work to 40 hrs/week doing in-shop work. Focusing on getting my hours for some more certifications I've recently received. I've already done some courses and now waiting on a few more results from recent exams I've taken. Once I pass these exams, I'll be pretty close to the $50/hr wage.

Most people that come here have focused on quick high wage potentials. Get in, profit, get out. That's one way to approach it. My approach is to build my trade skill set to span multiple industries and remove any geographical restrictions that may come with a job or career. Alberta is simply my nesting ground to build my human capital. I want the ability and the autonomy to choose when I want to work, when I don't want to work, and if I want to get back to work, have minimal barriers of entry because of the castle I built as my human capital. This is very achievable in my line of work, and through the networks I've made, it has been done and replicated numerous times.

I've kept up with this for the past 2.5 years now, and I'm ahead of schedule. The slowdown in the oil industry has actually helped me in that I have more time to get my hours for my certifications, study time for my exams, and explore other avenues that have not been apparent when I was working almost every day. It also helps that the loyalty I've demonstrated to my current employer over these years has allowed me to exercise these options, which may have been proven more difficult to do had I been continuously jumping ship in search of the next highest wage.

So there are people who are doing well, and still getting plenty of work. They were either in the right industry, knew the right people, and/or were in the right place at the right time.

So after being in Edmonton for 2 years, I got a 2 on, 2 off job in Ft. Mac back in May. It was fly in, fly out. Money was/has been great, but I made the mistake of moving back to Vancouver (home for me). I thought since they're willing to fly me anywhere, I might as well go somewhere nice. Big fucking mistake in my case. While I was living in Alberta, my head was much more in the game. Living in Vancouver and flying to Alberta for work every shift became harder and harder every time. I was always thinking about leaving the oil patch and the Vancouver move sealed the deal for me.

I bought a condo in downtown Van and registered for university. Will be starting as a year 3+ student in January! Haven't got possession of my condo yet. I'll be furnishing it and renting it out while I'm in university so I can cover the mortgage (or most of it at least). Trying to find a part time job in my trade out here in Vancouver, but it's proving to be difficult. I still haven't formally quit my job, but I won't be flying back for my next shift. It's been a fantastic experience.

So, would I repeat the past ~3 years all over? FUCK YEAH. Made good money, became a much more focused person, did shit I had never done before and will likely never do again, experienced real winter, realized what I wanna do with my life, met a lot of interesting people etc... etc... Might all sound cliche, but it's true. Can't wait for university now. I wonder how I'm going to do this time around with all the experiences I've had over the previous 3 years.

I might go back for a couple of months during the summer break, haven't decided yet. Those trade tickets will easily pay for a full year's tuition + living expenses in 2 months lol.

I'm still in the game for now.

I took a specific trade route and its kept me busy. The oil sands were a good place to make money while gaining experience but they're not the end all be all.

With the right mix of experience, tickets, and creature comforts, there's always the opportunities to move into other industries in the future.

More than ever, going forward my advice to those thinking of going into the oil industry, or any other heavy industry, is get your post secondary education. Don't fall into the 'red pill' false dichotomy that college is a waste of money, it's a big joke played on a large portion of young readers and it'll leave them worse off. The days where the oil sands work was handed out to street urchins for $100,000/year are over.

The industry is becoming like other industries, the barriers of entry are increasing while the work is becoming more mechanized, streamlined, efficient, and requires more brain than brawn.

The era of high pay, low experience, is drawing to a close. The new era of slow and steady is now the de facto order of business.

You're already aware of the lack of urgency from the certification body to mark these exams. One of my co-workers apparently waited 6 months for their results. I'm hoping it is not the same for me but time will tell. I'm caught up on all the exams I had planned for this year and already planning on the next set of tickets I need to get under my belt.

Ya I am still out here. I did a drilling job recently and have some more work lined up over the winter. My company runs two different types of software and I am highly proficient on only one. Unfortunately the other software is what a lot of the contracts are requesting right now. So my company is busy but not on the side that I work on.

I went on the No Fap challenge and installed software to block all adult sites. One side effect is the forum is now blocked too. I have 2 more months (I emailed it to myself with a time delay) before the email with the password returns ha. So my posting has been quiet for now.

I had two friends move out here recently and both are doing well. There is still plenty of $20-30 an hour town jobs and they haven't even tried for out of town work yet.

I finished the Oil Rigs eBook too - just waiting on Roosh to give me the go ahead with starting a thread on it. Is a little late for the $100+ barrel days but still would be a great resource for those thinking of coming out and want more info.

Hi,

Can someone guide me about what is the requirement for fitness for getting a job in oil fields or oil rig ?

I have some difficulty lifting heavy weights with my left hand due to a surgery long time ago, now it is ok but wrist movement is restricted.

Other hand is perfectly normal.

Met a girl in the bar here in Hawaii, she was a Canadian on vacation. We go back to her place, start chatting a bit in bed. I find out she works ON SITE as a crewing agent in AB. She told me about a friend who tried to hook her up with a laborer. Let's just say I got my pants on and got the fuck out of there.

Haha, true man, true. Won't deny that I'm an idiot sometimes (most of the time). It was more along of the lines of seeing how much girls (the very few that there are) get around where I work. It might be that way in a lot of places, but I just haven't PERSONALLY seen it like I have here.

I have to check out the other 164 pages, need to see how ya'll are investing your large chunk of change. We make a lot of money, but damn, does it suck being an in environment like ours. I've only been in the industry for something like 4 years now, and already trying to find a way out. The money and lifestyle are addicting and aside from having enough money invested to live off interest, the life I (we) live seems impossible in any other profession.

I've been back in shitty Regina, SK, for a year now working garbage warehouse jobs and hating my life lol. This time last year I was freezing my ass off in Kindersley, ended up getting frostbite, and just had enough of oil and gas. I actually got accepted into a preemployment trade program for instrumentation next fall, but my gut instinct is telling me to pass. I come from a somewhat technical (web design & support) background and have decided that that is the direction I want to go in, specifically web and software development.

I'm actually looking at heading back to Alberta (Saskatchewan is a JOKE when it comes to a lot of industries, specifically IT), but I'm leaning towards Calgary this time. I've had a few recruiters from various temp agencies contact me for warehouse/construction, so I don't think I'm going to have too much trouble getting something to start. But eventually I'm hoping to get a gig that's IT related. My main concern is actually trying to find a room to rent. If any of you guys are knowledgeable about Calgary or are in the area and can provide me with a lead for a room rental, I'd appreciate it.

I'm heading to the mac from Edmonton this Thursday November 26, leaving early morning, if anyone wants to rideshare. I'll be visiting family and doing some cold calling style office meets with prospective employers. Coming back likely Saturday the 28th morning to Edmonton.
