That's not the case, a bunch of guys have gotten close to 100k within 2 years and possibly over. It can easily take 2+ years to get to the six figure incomes that everyone on this thread talks about.
Also what the news doesn't talk about is how just because you get hired doesn't mean you get to goto work with long hours and a big rotation. If your not working your not getting paid! there's no guaranteed hours like office jobs. From what I'm hearing lots guys at my company are sitting at home technically employed but not getting paid, hoping for a call.
Honestly, I came here with a plan and did everything to find work and didn't come up with much, some guys have succeeded, others haven't it's a mixed bag. I just took a shot at the alberta dream and fell flat on my face.
You are a good guy but that post isn't exactly honest. If you want to leave that is fine but implying that you gave it all and followed the advice that others guys gave you is bullshit.
From what I have heard you have not been active in finding work and quite content in being on employment assistance. When things are tough for me I have worked up to 4 town jobs at a time. The other day I got a job offer off Kijiji within 2 hours for $18/hour. I didn't take it but the offer was there.
Not all guys did well but the majority of guys who didn't have only themselves to blame. No one said it was easy but it is definitely still possible with hard work. I have never seen the main guys posting here complaining, they dig in and suck it up during the hard times.
Your post above is an insult to the guys who have meet you multiple times and offered all sorts of help and advice.
For the record I made $208k last year, 140k first full year. My stats are well documented in this thread. Ask guys where I was during the 140k year when it was quiet for me (no rigs for 7 months) - landscaping, running a restaurant and started my own construction crew and tree planting.
I would reconsider the reasons why you failed...

don't post here much but I second atlantic's post. I've met you quite a few times bro, there's work to be had in our industry and you know this. But sitting & waiting around for a company to give you work doesn't get you far.
And if I recall correctly you'd have a couple more certifications in the very near future. You have seen the potential & the possibility to make money here, I'd reconsider your decision. Give me a call if you wanna talk.

RE: Working in the Canadian oil sands: 6 figures in 6 months!
Since this year is definitely tougher to find work, but still very much possible, I have been working on finally releasing an EBook. It will focus on how to move to town and in particular how to get work on the rigs. I have a thread coming on it soon but it will be over 60 pages and includes another short book on getting into Directional Drilling plus some more. A lot of the info is inside this thread but I have cleaned it all up and put it in order. The thread should be up within a week so there will be more details then.

RE: Working in the Canadian oil sands: 6 figures in 6 months!
Guys this will be one of my last posts on this thread as I've decided to quit working in the oil sands and have found a good job in another province which isn't related to the oil industry. I'm packing all of my shit into car and fucking off in a couple of days but before doing so, I'd like to have one last shin dig with all of you oil sands boys so let's meet up Tuesday night at our usual place, the Pint at around 8pm. I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can one last time and maybe a few others who I haven't met yet. And to any of you SJW idiots who want to disrupt our little get together, I will be the short, brown haired guy in a grey button-up shirt at the table and if you disrupt our meeting, I will personally rape you!

I took a job in another city in an industry that isn't energy related, I won't give out too much information but its government work, I'm still doing the exact same job and am still in the same union, I just transferred locals. I think that I will probably stay there for awhile, its a big change as I will be working normal hours and won't be taking months off at a time to travel so that will take getting used to but the new city is a very nice place, probably one of the most desirable places in the country to live.
As far as oil and gas goes, I think that it'll remain low for at least a couple more years but really who knows, I'm just glad that I don't have to watch the price of oil any more. I moved to Alberta in 2006 and didn't plan on staying there so long but it was fucking easy money and I lived a pretty fun lifestyle of travel and partying all over the world but even that gets old so I decided to look for work elsewhere.
I still think that the guys who have moved here will do well in their chosen careers although the glory days of $100+ oil aren't likely to be seen again for awhile, there's still work to be had. As I always recommended from the first pages of this thread, get into a trade that is involved in maintenance work so when oil goes to shit, as it has, you can still get maintenance work in refineries and upgraders, or you can fuck off to another industry as I am doing. Here is a link to an article about the shortage of oil tank storage in North America, the tank farms are at capacity levels not seen in 80 years and the refineries are pumping out record level of products, these place will thus require more maintenance: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/oil-stor...-1.3190001

RE: Working in the Canadian oil sands: 6 figures in 6 months!
Hey Guys, Hope everyone is doing ok.
Sorry to hear you go Scotian, your some man for setting up this thread, it's been a great help. Thanks a million and best of luck in your new venture...
I'm still coming over but it's a long enough process for my Irish passport. I'm waiting on my grandparents marriage cert and grandfathers death cert. Then I can register as a foreign birth (takes 3 to 12 months), then I can apply for an Irish passport so I can get a Canadian Working Visa. (I have and English passport but I'm 32 and you can only get an Canadian Working Visa on an English passport until your 30; an Irish passport allows you to get a Visa until your 35). So I don't think I'll be there until Summer/Autumn 2016, but I'm not too worried as it sounds like it's slow enough there at the moment.
I just got a job here as a blocklayers labourer, so I'm happy out and I'm training in the evenings. Hopefully this will prepare me for the work over there. Things are picking up in Ireland but the prospects are still much better in Canada for the long term.
As of now I'm still quite keen on getting a trucking licence (C1) to get my foot in the door over there, and hopefully move into a trade when I get a permanent residency. Though I am toying with the idea of just getting a labouring type job in the oilfields straight away as the trucking licence is quite expensive. Although I think a trucking job is more secure. What are peoples thoughts??
If anyone else is in a similar situation as me, it would be good to bounce some ideas off each other or I'll try help out where I can.
One company I've come across for the truck training is MTI (Mountain Transport Institute LTD). They seem pretty good, however they are claiming that an inexperienced driver will earn $26,000 to $36,000 a year whereas a MTI graduate will earn $55,000 to $80,000 a year. Has anyone heard of this company and are they as good as they claim?
