They're not editing it, if for example you type: gib jesus keine chance you'll also get give jesus a chance.

This is because of the way the algorithm works, it doesn't translate by a strict formula, but instead it "compares" your sentence to many similar sentences and their translations in its corpus, so if give X a chance has been repeated too many times, then it will tend to be chosen as the most likely translation even when it isn't correct.

I assume Sunni, since Shiites are only a majority in Iran. That said, there are of course different schools of Sunni Islam. And I imagine if they were Shiites fleeing religious persecution at the hands of Sunnis, the media would have already picked up on that and blown it out of proportion.

Edit: Or maybe they wouldn't have, since they won't admit that Muslims attack and kill each other over religion frequently. The war refugee narrative is easier to swallow.
