There are dirt poor Chinese girls in China, but how many are targeting rich westerners for dishonest financial purposes? The SM meat is really shit..tough, occasionally strange tasting, and not even what is advertised at times. Bored and low paid backroom workers have been known to dump in ground chicken, pork, and beef together at the end of the day giving it a stir reselling it the next.

You'd be way better off getting the butcher at the fresh market slicing you off a rump. The part where flies don't land on that is.

Admittedly I've been lazy about seeking out the better deals on fruit and veg. That's some good info you posted there. All the supermarkets seem to charge western prices (or more) which surprised me.

As for the meat, my local Robinsons is pretty legit. They sell pretty much anything you can think of, including plenty of meat-on-the bone, my personal favourite. Most lechon manok joints have been great also.

Most definitely the closer you are to the source the better the meat will be. Sort of like the girls. The ingredients in most farming provinces is usually better because it's direct from small farms a lot of times. Whereas when you shop in supermarkets in Manila a lot seems to be sourced from some big ass agri plantation farmed by poorly paid slaves and such.

Just regular rice from the rural provinces tastes way better too. Plus the small farms don't spray chemicals everywhere as much. When you shop for vegetables at fresh markets a little bit of holes in the leaves is a pretty good sign of limited spray.

I've never shopped at Robinsons so it might be better. It really depends, even at the big supermarkets it's inconsistent.

The best thing about the fresh market is the fresh seafood too. You can buy live crab, live shrimp, get fresh coconut milk made, etc.. for less than the supermarket.

CleanSlate returns to the Philippines in 2 months!

This time it will be less of a bang mission, but more of a relaxing trip to the remote islands of Palawan. I need to decompress and unwind. I'll probably take a girl with me, too.

Most likely I will not be putting up the numbers that I did in my first trip, and it will be a shorter trip overall... only 10 days this time. That said, few of those days will be in Manila. Any RVFers there at the time, we should meet up and get a beer.

Yep starbucks, not my favorite at all but a good airport solution.

The drink I like the most in Manila is the Pandan juice they sell at Zagu (they're everywhere). Give it a try if you haven't.

Their Ube drink is also nice but not as much. The other drinks they have are disappointing in my opinion.

I agree also with the people who say that the only way to win the game in the Philippines, but also in most countries of SEA is to create a harem, keeping it rotating and never never never fall into the trap of starting a serious LTR in SEA (only exception might be with a woman from the upper class, but surprise^^ - in a high %-tage those women are not after foreign men due to certain aspects like that as a foreign men you lack social and family power, which are both very important parameters in SEA. I was going to reply to this troll Haxton that it's not his place to try to shut anybody up, but I see that he is already banned.

But to respond to his trollish comments about whether or not visitors are qualified to write datasheets, here is why I think the answer is yes:

-Visitors can give the latest specific info about the hottest night clubs, bars and other spots.
-Provide visitor's perspective. For example, Filippino Cupid may may not be very useful for a resident but is definitely good for visitors.
-Comparisons with other cities visited recently - which ones are better?

Getting Here:
Tagbilaran Port has 11 daily fast ferries that come from Cebu and vice versa everyday. The trip takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. Weesam Express/OceanJet, Supercat, or 2GO. Some of the ferries have wifi (hit or miss) and most play movies on the TV screens so you can past the time. There is also a fast ferry that goes to Dumaguete 3 times a day and vice versa.
You have slower ferries and RoRo ferries that go to many of the major Philippine Islands (Luzon, Mindanao, Panay, etc.) and smaller tourist destinations in the area Camaguin and Apo Island

Tagbilaran Airport has 8 daily flights to Manila and back. The airlines that service here are Air Asia. Cebu Pacific, and Philippine Airlines. The cost for a one way ticket can range from 400 pesos to 2500 pesos depending on when you buy it and if they are having a sale. The rule of thumb with Air Asia and Cebu Pacific is the earlier you buy it the cheaper flight ticket.

Tagbilaran Airport is currently is in the process of being replaced by the New Bohol International Airport (under construction) on Panglao Island by Alona Beach. The expected completion date is mid to late 2017.

Transportation:

The frequent modes of transportation are the trike, jeepney, or motorbike. In the past year, I have seen the number of cars here on the road increase by at least 30 percent (which are replacing motorbikes as the main mode of transport for families in Bohol).

The cost of transportation is cheap around the city or to outside the city.

Trike in the city: 35 pesos max
Trike to ouside the city: 200 pesos max (ie Alona Beach area) from Center, Airport or Port.

Taxi or Van Transport to Alona Beach area: 425 pesos to 600 pesos max.

Jeepney from Alona Beach to Tagbilaran 20-30 pesos max
Jeepney in Tagbilaran 10-15 pesos max

Out of all the transportation modes available I recommend renting or buying a motorbike. Allows the ease of getting around and not having to pre arrange transportation. It allows you to filter through traffic in Tagbilaran instead of sitting.
To rent or buy a motorbike is inexpensive. To buy a used one one cost 13000 pesos and up. A new one starts from 40000 pesos and up.
To rent a motorbike cost about 300-800 pesos per day depending on the type of bike. Monthly rentals start at 3000 pesos and up.

Another plus with a motorbike is stopping to talk to a cute girl that you see walking or one that waves to you. More about that later on.

When negotiating prices stick with the price that you first give out, especially when you are in a area with many trikes and habal-habal(guys that give you a ride on the back of their motorbike). The same goes for renting a motorbike. Somebody will take the bait. They are all competing for your business plus uncoordinated unlike Thailand with the taxi mafia setting prices (Phuket example) and no taxi driver going under that price.

All the places I mentioned mostly stay under 2000 pesos a night except the Metro Centre Hotel(regular rate).
If you stay at the Metro Centre Hotel (Garcia Ave the main road in the center) then you are 300 meters one way BISU(Bohol Island State University), University of Bohol, Bohol Institue of Technology. Across the street is STI College and PMI College, 300 meters the opposite way is BQ MAll, Tagbilaran City Square, Alturas Mall(newest mall, currently under expansion), Holy Name University downtown campus. at the end of Garcia Ave is Plaza Rizal in front of Saint Josephs Cathedral.
Just a note that Metro Centre mall and Bohol Tropics both have clubs during the night time. Quality depends on who is patronizing the places at the time, plus you have the gringo hunters and semi pros. I stay away from those girls but whatever floats your boat.

If you are pipelining then staying in Tagbilaran is best because its easy for girls across the province to reach you by bus. Most of them come to Tagbilaran at least once a week to do their grocery shopping, go to the bank, and doing other miscellaneous things. Another option to meet girls is at Island City Mall on the edge of the city. This is where the air conditioned buses from around the province has a terminal (Southern Star). Plus its where the City Market is located. To get to Island City Mall is only 10 minutes from the center via Clarin Ave.

Short term stay as a tourist:
Alona Beach (main tourist beach on Panglao Island)

You have many options opening up every month to stay. So its impossible for me to keep up with all of them. 4 new large resorts are coming online in the next two months. One of them over 450 rooms (Hennan Resort). Check Agoda for the best prices.
The best place you can stay for your money is Panglao Regents Park which on Agoda is usually around 1500 pesos and up. The rooms are large, good access to the beach(only 150 meters), pool, gym, restaurant, bar, and free wifi. You can find places cheaper, all the way up to the major four and five star resorts close to Alona Beach that charge 5000 pesos and up.

Dumaluan Beach (the best beach on the island)
Danao Beach
Momo Beach
San Isidro Beach
Bikini Beach
Panglao Beach

Clubs and Bars coming online at a rate of one every 2 months.
Many water sports activities in the area.

Thanks for the details on this report. Actually, your timing with this report was good since I will be heading to Davao in 12 days for a few weeks of training then perhaps head to Bohol for the 5i50 Triathlon (https://vimeo.com/107676852) in Nov.

Regarding Panglao Island, I know it is a flat race course but could you shed some light on the road conditions on Dauis-Panglao Road? It would help to know if the conditions of the roads are very poor (cracked, bumpy, heavy w/ debris) or freshly paved? The video above shows me mixed results.

I am bringing my TT bike but may pack my Aero 808's or stock wheels depending on the road conditions. Can't bring both.

Also, how long will you be staying there before you head to EE?
