Killing a male Lion isn't going to endanger the species. Even if Cecil was a pride patriarch some other male will step up to the alpha role and take his place.

And, Lions are not vegetarians. They live by ripping their prey to pieces in an often horrific death ( unless a quick bite to the neck kills them first). And a male Lion will usually end his life in a violent manner, either killed by another male Lion or alone, ripped to bits by Hyenas.

A gunshot wound to the head seems a quick and painless end compared to the usual demise of a male Lion.

Standing up for what, exactly? If it's the protection of endangered species, why are you angry about the trophy hunting of lions, which through perverse financial incentives has caused a population boom in recent years? I'd have thought islandisation of natural habitats by logging routes is the kind of thing you should be getting angry about.

He had a bear permit, and killed one a little outside the area with a large group of guys? Welcome to hunting. It's a lot better than spot lighting deer from the highway.

I did a job with an old family friend a couple days ago who has hunted with Palmer (small world), and said Palmer is a fairly straight arrow but just has more money than sense, which translates to street smarts for the youngins.

Dude just kind of goes along with the flow, and pumps a lot of money into local economies, which I'm guessing is a lot more than damn near everyone that hates the guy.

That, and low level 'contributions' are normal in the third world, where the laws don't matter, you just know you have to grease the important people in the chain.

I agree with you entirely, Lee - and I also agree that he'd never have a fair day in court in Zimbabwe. Guess we'll just have to wait & see how it plays out, and I apologize (to all) if it seems like I'm a bit thorny on this issue. Anyone who has read my posts know that I'm not "the arguing type" - this just rubs me the wrong way on multiple levels.
