Bruce Wayne could no longer continue to be Batman. He was aging and physically broken from years of crime fighting which is why he lost to the younger, more formidable Bane.

At one point Alfred says "Gotham needs you knowledge and your resources, not your body, and your life." In other words, if you continue to be Batman, you will die.

With the League of Shadows neutralized, Gotham was saved and no longer needed Batman. Thus he decided to start a family, close one chapter in his life and begin a new one. That is not blue pill.

That's conflating a few things together. The first is that he wasn't aging and physically broken from years of crime fighting; he simply stopped being the Batman shortly after Dent's death and took an eight-year hiatus in which he simply allowed himself to fall out of condition entirely. Alfred kept pressing him to go and get a girlfriend or a wife, but he simply chose not to simply because of his devotion to Rachel. The League of Shadows did not re-enter the picture and wasn't on his radar until those eight years had passed.

In the Dark Knight Rises, Bruce Wayne is about 40 years old. He celebrates his 30th birthday in Batman Begins, and the third film takes place about 10 years after that.

How many pro athletes and fighters continue to compete at a high level into their 40's? The scene in which the doctor tells him he has no cartilage left in his knees emphasizes this point.

Regarding his loyalty to Rachel, that is a matter of debate. In my opinion, he was using her death to rationalize his decision to be a loner, but the true reason was his continuing obsession to be Batman, even though the city was safe in the post-Dent era and no longer needed him.

The problem is that even the cartilage thing was nonsense. Bruce was essentially Batman for less than a year. The events of BB (when he's Batman) were about 6 months, same for TDK - then nothing for 8 years. No Batman, no training, never finished the Batcave...never even bothered replacing the Tumbler. There was no logical reason for Bruce to be so deteriorated at 40. And no Nolanite apologetics will ever explain how the cure for a broken back is a solid punch.

Nolan's heart wasn't in it. There are multiple scenes where it's daylight, then dark a minute later. That's the kind of sloppy directing even Michael Bay would find embarrassing.

"Hey, Nolan. The Dark Knight was so awesome and made so much money that we would like you to make Batman 3."
"I don't want to. TDK was so well received that I don't think that I can top it and Heath is gone... I don't even like comic books."
"If you make Batman 3, we will let you make Inception."
"k cool."

I know lots of people give praise to The Dark Knight but it really wasn't that good and I suspect a lot of it is posthumous smoke-blowing.
Man I could write an essay on why that film failed.

Rumour was that in the original story (i.e. if Heath Ledger hadn't died), when Bane released the blackgate prisoners, the Joker would have been among them, who would have immediately started his chaos experiments in Gotham again, albeit 20 times worse than before because of the state of the city. He would have also clashed with Bane in a case of unexpected blowback. In the end, Batman would then have had to stop Bane AND the Joker.

I continue to lament that I couldn't have watched THAT movie instead?

Hmmmm. Interesting views. I guess I didn't think about his one-itis to Rachel, but I mean they did grow up together. I guess his bond to her was a little deeper than just a simple oneitis. They probably banged a lot too before he left Gotham.
I'm not saying Bruce was redpill in the movie, I'm saying that he had just swallowed the redpill. I believe that he grew up with Rachel and felt a different connection than all the status whores he fucks on regular which is normal human behavior. I agree the ending deviates from the redpill mantra but it did not specifically state they were married in the last scene. Nolan's endings always seem to leave things up to imagination of the viewer.

After reviewing everyone's thoughts, I believe some of view had to high expectations for this movie, but in retrospect I believe it is much better than most movies today. But I understand why TDK > TDKR. Joker was an alpha. Bruce was not. That was an extreme breath of fresh air. Especially how he talks to the thugs before he burns the piles of money.

Now fast forward to TDKR. Bruce was still a beta, BUT he started catching on... Bruce is human. He has gone through extreme emotional pain and torture his whole life, maybe he was tired and wanted Catslut. But yeah, now that I think about it TDK was more alpha. But TDKR reminded of my struggle with accepting reality and my depression. I guess it just spoke to me.

What if there were a scene of Bane breaking the Joker's back? Now THAT would have made the movie better.

I honestly thought it was the strongest. Bane was such a great enemy - stronger and perhaps smarter than Bruce - able to psychologically own him. Bruce had a stronger sense of will, and will outdoes strength and intellect. It is the strongest of our aptitudes.

Also: the self sacrifice of Batman with the bomb at the end.. "there is no greater love than a man who is willing to lay down his life for his friends"

TDKR was above and beyond what I expected.

EDIT: The whole "jumping without a safety rope is the only way to escape your prison" metaphor was SO powerful. I mean come on! This movie speaks to the soul. TDK was really just a great villain driven movie.. TDKR was philosophical, with a great villain as well

RE: Why "The Dark Knight Rises" is the most redpill movie of this generation
I don't think this movie had anything to do with red pill; it was entertaining at best.

However, the avalanche of bizzare details ruined the experience - for example, Talia al Ghul and not Bane being the mystery child from the pit (the entire character of Talia made zero sense, plus why would she sleep with Batman on top of all that...?), or that horde of policemen somehow surviving locked in a pit for months and being in awesome condition (and then fighting through an army with tanks and automatic weapons with no casualties), or Bane failing and being defeated for no reason at all in the last battle... I could go on and on.

A movie with some great moments and very good acting by Tom Hardy, but marred by trying to cram too many nonsensical plot twists into a single movie. Its great idea was ultimately destroyed by Nolan losing the touch with reality and a lack of attention to details.

A 4'10'' little girl at max is able to make a jump that not one of hundreds of adult male innmates can, and that speaks to you? It is pathetically retarded, no two ways about it.

Bruce Wayne couldn't even do it until he took off the rope. The message is pretty clear that you have to take a leap of faith to get out of the pit. That is a great lesson. Don't let the fact that a girl did it taint the message for you, brother.

I'm smart enough to understand the 'message'. I hold it in contempt because it was compromised by the fact that it is physically impossible that a short girl is able to make a jump that dozens if not hundreds of adults can't. Messages and themes can be done in a subtle and sensible way that doesn't blatantly insult the viewer's intelligence.

Nolan could have filmed CGI of Christian Bale lifting the three tons of the Batmobile with his bare hands and you'd be amazed at Batman's inner conviction symbolized in him lifting the Batmobile.

This was the child of Raz Al' Ghul we're talking about, and she went on to almost destroy Gotham. Plus, children are agile and nimble - they can do some pretty incredible things. Something is stopping you from appreciating the best part of this movie and you're coming off as bitter. Let go of your safety rope and make the leap. We may just have to agree to disagree. 5 star film - I have never encountered so much anti-tdkr sentiment before I was surprised to find it here

I couldn't watch that movie because of the practical fact I couldn't understand what the villain was saying because of that mask.
