Question Request for clarification of moderator role
FAO Roosh,

I would like to confirm that the behaviour of the moderator is within his mandate. Since I joined last year, the moderator appears to have been getting increasingly zealous. I am concerned this is going to cause a chilling effect, due to people constantly checking their speech to avoid bans, leaving due to the subsequent straight-jacket feeling, and by otherwise useful posters being banned for disallowed comments in peripheral topics.

What prompted this post is this, which included the moderator warning a bunch of long-timers, and included him passing personal judgement on the intellectual merit of the discussion that was occurring:
/thread-46857-...pid1004512
This isn't to say that I agree with the speech in that thread, but that it is one thing to disagree, and another thing to forcefully silence.

I submit that the moderator is using the term 'troll' inappropriately, and that the usage of the word is diverging from 'deliberately provoking people for the sake of it' to 'talking about things that displeasure the moderator'. Furthermore, the moderator appears to be increasingly taking pleasure in banning and warning (and the power thereof), as indicated by his recent introduction of a 'banning gif theme', and mentioning the pleasure he receives from certain bans (/thread-46787-...d1001646). I've even seen the moderator preemptively close a thread because he thought it might be going in a direction he didn't like. I submit that the role of the moderator is to maintain decorum and uphold the rules, for the pleasure of the host, only; and that a ban should be an unfortunate necessity, not a source of pleasure.

I have included an anonymous poll purely for feedback reasons on the feeling of the forum membership.

Should this dissent risk my own banning, I will mention that I originally came here to speak freely on 'red-pill' topics with other open-minded men. I have been checking my wording and speech so often lately (in case the moderator doesn't like it being said in this or that manner) before I post that it feels like I'm talking in general public rather than the manosphere. If this feeling of being under the current moderators discretionary panopticon continues then this isn't really the same community I joined.

Are the actions of the moderator to the pleasure of the host, and if so, would it not be best that they clearly be codified into the rules (e.g. 'you may not discuss X, you may not discuss Y') rather than leaving it to what the moderator decides is a 'troll'?

Regards, Phoenix.

RE: Request for clarification of moderator role
Some people might say excessive - I never had any problems with Tuth or Roosh personally (best way to stay clean? Stay out of race threads).

Some people might say weak - when you get weak, you let neon-haired freaks and child-molesting, bi-gay-trans freaks take over.

Two men moderating over maybe 200 active members, not a bad job they're doing.

RE: Request for clarification of moderator role
That's the first I've been in that Mediterranean thread linked...had no idea what it was about.

While I wish race could be discussed further as merely a scientific discussion (HBD...I actually find heartiste's discussion of the science of races and ethnicity in regards to historical context and behavior interesting), it seems like it's fairly simple to stay away from race threads.

I'm ok with that being basically the one subject to avoid.

I put mildly excessive, but the forum seems to function well at a moderator level 'mildly more excessive' than how I would run it (I've never run a forum, so who am I to say).

I think the question and concern are legitimate but I think OP should've sent Roosh and/or Tuth a PM instead of opening a thread.

RE: Request for clarification of moderator role
To my knowledge someone who steps into race baiting and religious bating topics gets sufficient warnings first before the ban hammer hits. I think adding a politics board to the forum would alleviate some of the serious topics from everything else and keep it fun and light hearted. Consistent race and religious bating would also be easier to find.

Enjoy your ban. I don't know where you got the idea that you could come into someone else's house and start criticizing their house rules. Sounds like typical feminist shit to me.

The purpose of this forum is not talking about how "jews/blacks/whites/muslims/etc are gonna getcha", and if you think this is a forum where we have reasoned discussions with nitwits who buy into that insanity, you're in the wrong place, and no passive-aggressive posts (nice how you consistently call him 'the moderator', when everyone knows you're talking about Tuth, you fucking coward) and polls are going to change that. Find another board if that's your intent.

On topic: I've gotten one warning since I've starting posting here for being an overaggressive ass, and I deserved it. Now I'm being aggressive again...but I think this time I'm actually justified.

The Charlie Hebdo attack seems to be the turning point. Now every day we have a fresh Islam thread...

People like myself who have never stepped foot in the Middle East should read Chaos' travel threads on his visits out there. Gives some perspective besides Sean Hannity's latest reports on the state of the Muslim world.

/thread-32062.html
/thread-33559.html

Probably my two favorite trip reports on the forum.

Not trying to inject myself in something I'm not involved with but I'd hate to see top posters get banned because they aren't fans of Islam.

Moderating this forum is akin to governing a small town - the citizens get restless and feisty from time to time and need a thumping to keep them in line.

And all this whinging over temp bans handed down in an immigration/race thread?? Here is a bright line rule that red pill alpha males have a real tough time wrapping their head around: Don't start or participate in race threads. Is this rule really that hard?

RE: Request for clarification of moderator role
To paraphrase Shakespeare, the answer is not within our moderators but within ourselves.

The moderator, Tuthmosis, starts off his "Moderator Action" post by saying: " I came in to find the reported posts in the double digits for this thread."

Looks to me like some members were hitting the "report" button (see bottom right) for that thread. Tuth was responding to problems, not hunting for them so he could deem people trolls willy-nilly.

Want less moderation? Then stop clicking on the "report" button so much.

With "double digit" reports, it's my opinion that had he not acted, then he'd be screwing up as moderator.

I also think the topic at hand is immaterial. We make fun of feminists who require "safe spaces," and as such should be able to handle -- if not welcome -- topics that are offensive and disagreeable, even on a personal level.

I respectfully disagree. Some of these people are the Internet equivalent of hobos screaming at you on a subway about government conspiracies. Some others are the equivalent of Walter from The Big Lebowski, always bringing up their pet subject ('Smokey, this isn't Nam, this is bowling. There are rules.') even when it's utterly and obviously off topic. A moderator (Tuth) does the important task of preventing these people from derailing intelligent conversation and keeping things from degrading so badly that they resemble Stormfront.

EDIT: One example I can cite of someone who can voice (what I consider to be) strange opinions and beliefs, but keep things relatively kosher and intelligent, is Zelcorpion. Although it appears he must have crossed a line in the linked thread, I generally don't have a problem debating issues like vaccines with him, even though I do know that a lot of his ideas are 'out there' medically. I think several of his contributions represent ways to discuss different ideas and opinions in an intelligent fashion, and judging by the lack of disciplinary action (up until the linked thread), I think Tuth and Roosh recognize that, although I obviously can't speak for them. I'd like to add that I haven't read the linked thread, so I can't comment on anything that's gone on there.

If you read carefully the mod did what he did because members of the forum were clicking the report button on other members. I have never clicked the report button on others because i could care less but these religion troll threads are getting out of hand. I fully agree with the mod's actions.

RE: Request for clarification of moderator role
I like the moderation on this site, I really do. I don't say that lightly. I was a member of Totse (troll's paradise) for a while and when the moderation is weak you get all manner of trolls popping out of the woodwork.

What I like about this forum is that even the members are self-policing. In a sense, the membership bans you by reporting your bullshit and bringing it to the attention of roosh or tuth, so I'm all with it.

Here's a solid heuristic for posting on the RVF: is my post helping or hurting the discussion? Be honest with yourself. If you're hurting the discussion and then wonder why you got a 7 day ban, then, brother, you're beyond help.

I never feel like I can't say what I want to say without getting banned, but I typically don't want to say stupid shit.

RE: Request for clarification of moderator role
I visit a lot of technical forums where I give out a lot of good intel on various topics: Tor and Freenet and I2P and the like. I also do the same with my writing method for the thriller novels I put out. Character voice. Pacing. Misleading the reader. Try/Fail. But I've never seen such a risk of doing so as I have on this forum. That's why I just don't comment on most topics... the fear of a ban actually steers me away from where mods hang out even though I have great stuff to share.

At Ars Technica you can speak your mind without fear as long as you keep it civil. Not sure why it is so different here?

RE: Request for clarification of moderator role
Honestly I have had few issues with the moderation minus one or two banned members, but it is what it is. It's Roosh's forum and if you don't like it go the way of Deb, BigBootyLuvr, and Dash and head over to that other forum. Good on you for saying it but a PM would have been better than raising a fuss if you had issues. Not to mention bans keep the quality of posts high. I've never seen such a dearth of high quality posters that I disagree with and I love it. More than a few members have changed my opinions on certain topics.

A word of advice to newbies. An interested girl will make the effort to reciprocate. You can't fix running bad game if you've already been failing with her.

Would you find it ironic if many people 'hoped you got banned'? Would you find it reasonable that many people report you?

This does nothing the discussion. You're being aggressive here and making a hostile environment in this forum, which is supposed to be a safe space for men. Since you believe everyone should follow the rules, I have reported you. I hope you're learn to respect the rules more in the future.

This is supposed to be a safe space for men to discuss nearly anything and everything. Notice, in the forum rules, it says it is okay to talk about race as a topic, but not race baiting.

As for the OP, I can't deign to know exactly what he's thinking, but I only think he's saying moderator to have a cool diplomatic tone as opposed to name calling, which you engage in frequently with "fucking coward, nitwits" etc.

Quote:On topic: I've gotten one warning since I've starting posting here for being an overaggressive ass, and I deserved it. Now I'm being aggressive again...but I think this time I'm actually justified.

I don't know what is going on in your life, but it seems that things on the internet rustle your jimmies too easily. I think you're having a bad day and should take a break from the forum, if not the internet entirely.

I didn't understand this rule before joining RVF in December, but now I get it. Heartiste is both an avid/famous game-blogger AND an anti-Black racist (or close-to-racist, depending on your opinion). Since Heartiste shits on Black people so strongly, we simply must distance ourselves from all forms of race-baiting to provide open arms for Black men who want to learn game.

------------

Edited to add: The "costs" of this rule is that forum members can't participate in race-baiting threads (or else they get banned), but the reward of this rule is that the Black forum members have contributed their unique perspective on Game, female nature, and the future of America. I think it was Athlone who wrote that wonderful article telling White men, "All of the stuff you worry about has been epidemic in Black America for the last thirty years, and the US didn't fall apart. So chin up, respect your Black brothers, and keep fighting the good fight."

I, for one, think the reward is well-worth the costs.

Roid-Rage Asshole Troll

You didn't quote me, but I think this was obviously directed at me. Let's analyze my post:

Enjoy your ban. I don't know where you got the idea that you could come into someone else's house and start criticizing their house rules. Sounds like typical feminist shit to me.

Your two problems (that you highlighted) were about me calling him a feminist and calling for his ban. I think we can both agree that predicting a ban (which I am, because this screams of a meltdown) is quite different from calling for a ban. Other posters before me quite obviously suggested that disciplinary action was likely for this thread. Hell, even the OP smelled a potential ban coming! I'm just saying it plainly. As an aside, imagine working at a company, and then utilizing that company's conference room to organize a discussion on whether you think your boss is being a dick. If your boss found out, what's the likelihood that your ass would be fired?

We regularly criticize feminists for joining organizations and then demanding rule changes for their own personal preferences. I made that comparison: making a thread to incite members to criticize the owner of the forum and his chosen moderator with the obvious intent to enact rule changes is similar to one feminists make. Do you disagree?

You then say I admit to being an ass. First, I admitted to once being an ass, for which I got a warning and I apologized. In this case, I think my aggression is justified. Possibly the most aggressive thing in my post:

...and no passive-aggressive posts (nice how you consistently call him 'the moderator', when everyone knows you're talking about Tuth, you fucking coward)

Passive aggression is cowardly. If you have a problem with Tuth, message Tuth. Making a post to discuss whether your administration is fucking up and failing to name the person who you disagree with is passive aggressive. Just because it's not out in the open does not mean it's not an attack.

EDIT: This post also functions as a response to Geomann180's.

The subject of that thread was primarily the situation regarding the current migration of people from Africa and the ME to Europe via the Med.

When I came back to it all I saw were conspiracies, slavery and all sorts of other things.

I understand people are passionate about what they know and believe in but Tuth has had enough with the whole jew/black/Islam/Christian conspiracy thing and he has mentioned it in every single thread to do with such topics on top of multiple banning and warnings.
