wow man! the camps look like paradise compared to what I'm used to living in! Scotian you're a fucking godsend. Also, on another fucking note. I'm kind of into the Ecstasy/MDMA popping habit, so do you have any experience with guys who pop E? did they last, or is that a habit that's going get you in trouble out there? you said they have ways around shit, and i'm not putting you on the spot or anything, but there are ways around the piss test with shit like E right?

Can you live in the camps if you are just doing simple work like kitchen or janitor work?

I may halt my travels an check this out. It seems like i could get back into my military bootcamp mentality if i stayed in the camps. I wouldnt have anything else to do other then work out, work on my spanish, read some books, play some xbox. An in the process i can make some money an pay some more of my houses off...... I dont have any trade skills you listed an honeslty not interested in learning any. But if i can make a $1000 or more a week washing dishes or changing trash cans im down, give me a ipod an im happy no matter what im doing. All this while working out everyday and working on my pimsluer an rosetta stone spanish an what not.

Cause i have been bouncing around asia for going on 4 months now an managed to work out maybe 5 or 6 times. Did maybe 3 rosetta stone exercises. I have however had a blast an met lots of nice women But in the big picture of things i havent done much to improve upon myself....

I like to party too but I leave that shit at home while I'm up north, that's how most guys roll, but of course, you can get that shit up here but be prepared to pay a premium price. I wouldn't recommend dropping E while working on an industrial site, you'll be in la la land then end up chopping your thumb off, or worse.

The way around the drug test is taking these drinks they sell at head shops or buying a bag of synthetic urine, yes, fake piss and using that in the test.

Dude, if you want a job up here, quit the hard partying, if you get a job you'll be too busy to even think about partying. I haven't had a beer in 2 weeks and its no big deal, but once I get back to Edmonton in ten days, watch out!

All camp staff (kitchen, security, janitorial, etc) live in camp and generally work 21 days on, 7 off. Since its not skilled work, it will be hard to get this type of job if you aren't Canadian, are you?

No im American... So without a skill it would not be easy to find a job there?

Its not impossible, just harder. It would make more sense to acquire a skill stateside then come up north.

dude honestly, don't be intimidated by bigger dudes. most likely, they feel superior and expect you to look away and act scared in their presence. look them straight in the eye and show them that you're not scared. you'll gain their respect and not look like a pussy afterwards; just do your work and shut the fuck up, and don't take shit from anybody, and i guarantee you, you'll be fine.

I figured that, but partying is in my nature. I only want to come out west to work hard and get payed well, so staying clean and not fucking around isn't a problem.
But the move is a big step in my life. I'll be leaving everything behind to pursue a lifestyle so foreign to me; i don't think i can take it without messing up.
everything sounds too good to be true, and also sounds like the wild west with cowboys and shit. I'm 98% sure i'll go, but I know it will either make or break me out there. damn i have so much respect for you guys that have have made it out there; it's sounds so fuckin hard.

Labour positions are the best way to get in the door, work hard and prove yourself and you can quickly work your way up to something better. I've posted the names of several companies throughout this thread, check out their websites and see if they have any entry-level, labour type positions. These will be hard to get into if you're not Canadian, as we have no shortage of unskilled labour here, if you're a foreigner, its best to acquire a skill before you try to enter into Canada.

Depends on what you're looking to do, GP is more of a drilling town while Fort Mac is oil sands (refinery type work) although there is also some drilling there too. I've never been to GP so can't say much about it but most people I know who've been there don't have great things to say about the town. You should be able to find work easily in both places, may be better to hit up GP since you have have buddies there.

Tapanar, thanks for posting those links, those are great articles and show very well just how immense the size of these projects in the oil sands are. I'm actually working close to Christina Lake now on a SAGD project about 2.5 hours SE of Fort mac.

Guys, I've been back up here in camp for a month now and haven't been this busy in a long time, everyone else I know is really busy now too, I just hope that the price of oil doesn't shit the bed too hard, its dropped quite a bit lately!
