I was homesick a bit as well but it was only when I was not working OT and pissed off with only 40 hour weeks. When I was on the road and seeing the nice paydays mixed with my saving of daily LOA I was not too concerned. Even when I visited home every few months, honestly everything was basically the same. Jonny was still getting married to Sally, Joe bought a new truck and has payments for the next 84 months, Rick and Stacy bought new furniture at IKEA. A few buildings that were being constructed were a little taller than last time I was there etc.

Sure eventually I would want a gig where I could be home at least 7-10 days a month or months at a time when I have time off (if seasonal), but just remember the reason you came out here. If there was this type of opportunity at home then you would be there, but its not, so remember that.

If you don't like the job then look for another but do not give up. Skype and call home if you want. I would always go on my city's websites to stay up to date, and re confirm that fuck all has changed.
Venture into the city, go to Whyte Ave, Jasper,meet forum guys, go to the gym. West Ed mall is fucking awesome on weekends with all the talent, I honestly went there 2-3 times a month. Think of the future if you stick it out, watching your bank account grow.

Just think of the bigger picture man, there was a reason you came in the first place. You had the balls to move out here, the hardest part is done.

How are the job prospects right now? I'm going to get back in touch with my company for electrical and see if I can score some camp work but if that doesn't pan out i need a plan B.

Wanna stack up my finances and shit before it's too late and I go abroad. Thinking of being there within a week or so (Edmonton).

Is anybody currently job searching and seeing a good amount of prospects? I have my own set of tools and could work as a helper or something for tradesmen or on a rig just to get some money it's definitely not a career just the quickest money possible at this point. Probably shouldn't have waited this long but I have 2 months left before I leave around Nov. 1 - 10.

Where are you going TravellingSoldier? Think I read in a different thread that you're going to Asia right? Its probably obvious for maximum and quickest cash stacking potential to go to the rigs since theres no real delays besides waiting for a call to one. Sounds like you're handy enough to get on one. What trade were you in, electrician? Is it easy to get hired as a year one apprentice if you're green as hell? I'm always looking for a new gig since I need to find something to do for next year.

I currently live in Ontario having moved here from the UK in June. I have a one year working visa with the option for a further 2 years. I am qualified up to British college level in Administration and I have a full UK driving license that I can exchange for a Canadian one. Anyway, what sort of opportunities are there for a guy without any commitments or restrictions? I'm a fast learner and physically strong. Unfortunately I don't have any qualifications that could match up to the oil industry (unless its office work which I have experience and qualifications in) but I am 100% willing to learn. Do I have options for entry level work or should I give this a miss?

Probably should add I am 24, so not past it in terms of getting qualified.

I joined here in March and have read the thread since then, I'm looking for some advice specific to my situation, for everyone saying there is work for anybody, there's others saying no chance without experience, not exactly a clear outlook for me to be basing decisions on.

That's what I was thinking. Only place I have really used that is solid - indeed.ca... not sure which companies are no bullshit and always looking for workers. Yes it is easy even if you're green, but you'll usually need to know someone at least if you're looking for camp work. That, or make sure you have a car, have some tools and call every single electrical contractor in the yellowpages once, twice, thrice until you get a bite.

I don't think they can give exactly the specific details you require mate but from what I've read in the thread there is a lot of opportunity in Alberta as opposed to Ontario.

If you willing to start at the bottom and earn some dosh then why not do the maintenance starting in September/October with some of the companies Scotian listed or if your willing to do some hardcore work then work on a rig?

I'm easy as long as there is the scope to eventually be earning decent money out here. I am absolutely willing to start at the bottom, thanks for suggesting maintenance, do you think they would be open to employing someone without any qualification/experience in the oil industry

Your situation isn't special and you clearly have not read the thread. There is 10+ reports of guys coming out here with no experience and getting high paying jobs, some of them from Europe.

Quick update: I am flying to Calgary on Tuesday night, the 19th. Completed my Standard First Aid course in Toronto. My CSTS and PST tickets were done online. My H2S Alive training is on Wednesday. The plan is to knock on a dozen MWD companies in Calgary and Edmonton this week and speak to hiring managers/MWD people.

Anybody up for a rooshv drinks meet in Edmonton on Wednesday ? If so, I could catch a bus after my H2S training gets over and reach Eton around 10 pm. Message me if folks in Calgary want to meet up too.

You can't really go wrong by moving to Alberta if making money is a priority, this thread has 122 pages of people's experiences who've made the move and the vast majority have found work and are doing well. I just read an interesting statistic online; As the Statistics Canada report issued Friday showed, Alberta is responsible for almost all the new net jobs generated in the past year — 82,300 of the 94,700 countrywide, or 87 per cent — as the province saw employment rise an impressive 3.8 per cent. I don't know what more you would need to know to convince you to make the move out west, it really isn't a tough call at all, Alberta is where all the jobs are.

Its pretty much a 100% guarantee that you'll find work in Alberta, how successful you'll be is entirely up to you and how hard you're willing to hustle and work. As I've mentioned on here hundreds of times, the bar is pretty low and any guy who isn't physically or mentally retarded has a good shot of making lots of money out here and yes, that does include people without prior experience. That being said, if you're lazy or feel entitled to be making lots of money, you probably won't last long in the oil patch.

Do what Tresdus mentioned a few pages ago. Rent a uhaul van for 20 bucks a day. Then to really save money, sleep in the back of it in a wal mart parking lot.

Fuck man sorry to hear that, that is some very bad news, hopefully the insurance isn't too bad to deal with, this should be a reminder to guys out there that Edmonton is a bit of a rough town and stolen cars are quite common in the city. It seems like for every guy like us who moves out here to work, there's some other dick head who comes here to steal and commit crimes. You definitely want to keep your apartment and house doors locked and put away any valuables that may be visible in your vehicle, may not be a bad idea to get an alarm or one of those steering wheel lock things to deter the thieves.

Yeah, crime in Edmonton is incredibly high.

Watch out where you park, I heard of someone yesterday; he was sleeping in his car for 30 minutes with the windows down and a guy came and just beat him up and stole the car.
