That one I linked to is a one bedroom so mine is more expensive but ya its the one by Value Village, there's definitely lots of condo options in Etown for under 300K, especially the farther away from the River Valley and down town you go.

Oh shit I didn't see the 1 bed+den. Still nice though. I always wondered the prices of the condos in that massive sky scraper on Jasper they're building. Seriously nice view.

The Pearl, for example, starts at 300K for 1 bedroom and 400K for 2 bedrooms. It's not bad. Fox towers are a bit less. My favorite project so far (not that there are many in this city) is Ultima.

Those downtown high rises are pretty nice, I looked at a couple when I was buying back in the summer of 2011 but decided against them, they're fairly small and the bigger ones were out of my prices range (250-300K). I also considered traffic, my place on Whyte is close to all of the shops for the contractors in my trade, whereas none are downtown and I'd have to deal with traffic on a daily basis, something I'm not too keen on. There's ton of new condos in the south around the Terwillegar/23rd avenue areas but they're a bit far out and have that cookie cutter suburb feel to them.

They're expanding the LRT routes in the next few year, so keep an eye out for that, I think they're going east and west more, I know that they'll have a stop near my condo in 2017 and hopefully something near the new arena they're building.

Yeah the traffic issue is definitely something to think about. Having to cross the river on a daily basis can get tiring. I'm okay with small, as long as it's in a mid-rise/high-rise and it's modern.

I was looking at maybe putting 10% done on a unit at Ultima, but it's 95% sold. I think that's rare in Edmonton for a building still 1.5 years away from completion. Its proximity to the arena obviously helped it.

Fox towers are another option in a similar price range (33 and 28 storeys).

A little progress update of what i have been upto since i came here on Saturday !

I rented a car, got a room at hi Edmonton for 4 days since i cant move into my place till today ! I found an ad on kijiji for a company looking for pipe fitter helpers starting at 25 with exp. Now me having no exp, i called then on Mon on ly linch (rig fall safety course) and told them my story. So they told me, sorry man positions are full. So, me As stubborn as i am, right after my class ended, i showed up at their office and plainly demanded to speak to the guy i talked to in the phone. I literally had ti sell myself like 7 yr old trying to sell cookies, the tickets i have are H2S Alive, CSTS, first aid, fall safety.. So after a 10 minute very enthusiastic conversation, he told me he will talk to the boss and call me tomorrow. So yesterday during my class he calls me and offers me to come in for an interview. Long story short, i start Monday as a pipefitters helper at 23/hr, 10.5 hr days! So whats the conclusion ? Its YOU who can get whateverrr you want for yourself ! Typed it on my phone, will do a detailed post later abt some other stuff too.

I am Civil Engineer from Latin-america and I have been working in the Oil&Gas Industry during 10 years (Venezuela and Brazil), 5 years as Earthwork Supervisor and 5 years as Onshore Rig Move Coordinator. Despite I had been working for Canadian Companies with contracts in Venezuela and Brazil, things are very differents here and my main goal at the moment is to apply for a PR next year, According all the info that you post in the last pages, the best way to apply it, is working as well testing, wireline or MWD (all this are on-call jobs and work 15/6?). One of my questions is: how hard and long is to become in a Wireline operator/Well testing operator /MWD operator once you have started in one of this jobs as a helper. I know there is no chance to get my PR as Rig Move Coordinator or Truckpusher and if I will start to send some resumes as Civil Engineer I have to take a certificate to be recognized as Civil Engineer in Canada and the time is running and my plan is to apply for a PR before Dec-2015.

I am planning to fly to Edmonton on Aug. 27 and take the H2S course in Enform - Nisku on Aug. 28 (I have already PST, TDG, WHMIS and Fisrt Aid tickets), after that rent a car and go to Nisku and Whitecourt to go for all the companies that you guys have mentioned in this forum....

I've been here for about a year and a half now. All's going well so far. Just working away on a 2 year contract for a solid company in Edmonton that's got work year round - they brought me over here on a temporary work visa (LMO) - by this stage I maybe could have 'crossed the road' for some extra bucks and hours, but have decided that for me personally, it's best to stay put. It's great to read about the guys that came here and are doing great.

I reckon the economy is good for the medium term, as is the real estate market - I just bought a house, so am putting my money where my mouth is as it were ha.

Silly question, but do you guys think this will be an option for me 4 years down the road? I'm currently serving in the military right now, and when I get out I'll have a 6 months of nothing before I start school in the fall. I'm working as a civil engineer right now working with fuels, water systems and a little bit of electrical stuff. I'm definitely cut out for this kind of work too.

Yes, production on the US side is only going to continue to increase as well. If you are already a civil engineer and you are interested in this line of work, why are you going to go to school in the fall? It seems you already have the necessary credentials. Go apply at Halliburton, they have programs to recruit ex-military guys.

So my, adventures so far in Edmonton have been pretty crazy. Since I got here, I thought I had a room already booked (already paid 2 month rent in advance), which was'nt really. the lady I rented it from started giving me the run arounds. So ultimately I firmly asked for my rent back, as i decided to couch surf for a week which started yesterday. My car has been the best investment I ever made ! No jokes, it runs like a beast, drives like the comfiest limo anyone has ever been in. I also thought I had a pipefitter gig on the way. But when I called on Friday to ask about what time should I show up to work on Monday, they hung up the phone, and when I went to their office to ask what was going on, I was told that they hired someone else that day who was physically better able to do the job. Im almost 6'2 and 225 lol.

So saddened with no hope left in humanity, I was driving in Nisku and saw a sign saying "Hiring Rig hands". Parked my car, took my resume and tickets (H2S Alive, Rig Fall Arrest, First Aid, PST) in the office and told the secretary that Im returning from my days off, and looking for work again. She told me they are not looking for floorhands, but for leasehands; I agreed and was sent to a recruiter. With in 20 minutes after that I walked out with a passed drug test in her office, some thousand pages to sign for employment and TDG/WHIMIS handbooks to complete, with a physical booked on Monday. So I guess, things are looking good now. BUT, I also have a couple of general labour cash paid daily jobs lined up which im doing, to keep making money while I get assigned to a rig. To me, a day completed without money, is a failure of a day. Im just THAT motivated !

Long story short, I also managed to get half of my rent money back from the crazy landlady, and headed to "The Walkabout Pub" on whyte ave in an hour or so. $3 pints boys; Everyone is welcome to join !

Well I'm the complete opposite. I've been working as a sheet metal apprentice for the last month and I fucking hate it. I'm depressed and homesick as fuck. Been like this for the last 2 weeks. Quitting that job on Monday , the journeyman I'm partnered with was like yep okay. I need motivation, but I don't know what the fuck I want to do yet. I know there's tons of jobs and opportunities but I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs like a dope

I'm on my way to whyte ave for a good time. If anyone's around holla at me.

Homesickness is normal. It goes away though. Best way to keep the homesickness to a minimum is to engage in hobbies. For me, this is what the gym is for.

You mention lack of motivation. I'm guessing this also means you don't have a goal in mind job-wise. Goals such as maximizing earning potential, being the head-hancho of said company, or being a seasonal but well compensated worker. Neither of those goals are appealing to you? You may need to sit down and revisit your priorities then. What are you really doing in Alberta then?
