The one I'm using now (thanks to this thread: /thread-11199-...#pid178336)
Few ice cubes
2 scoops of preferred chocolate protein
8oz of almond milk
1 tbsp of coffee grounds (preferably flavored but unsweetened, I like chocolate)
Its simple, low carb, and tasty. The coffee does make it a bit gritty, which I kind of enjoy to be honest, but the flavor the straight grounds add is boss.

that sounds really good.
Protein shakes one of those things to experiment with to find what works with both the person and the workout the person is using. I've heard people give some seriously asinine opinions on supplements.\
Asking what is the best one is not the right question just because whatever works for the individual is the best one.
i think a good tactic is to play with some additional ingredients to mix it up. i've heard an olympic level trainer, old school guy who advised to his athletes to supplement with whole milk and that's it.

RE: Protein Shakes
There's a few things to consider when buying a protein powder. The first is your budget and the second is your tolerance of dairy.
If you suspect you have any intolerance to dairy, do not get casein powder or any blend that contains casein. Many people who have trouble drinking milk, etc.. equate that to lactose intolerance when the real issue is casein. That's what I thought so I was still taking casein powders and eating dairy (mostly cheese) that was low in lactose. When I kicked all dairy (exception of whey), I felt much better within a couple of days. I kid you not, eliminating dairy is one of the most important things I have done to improve my day-to-day quality of life.
If you are mildy sensitive to dairy like me, you should be alright with whey, even concentrate. If you are highly sensitive to dairy, isolate is better. And if you are really allergic (not just sensitive) to dairy, you may have to go with egg protein, beef aminos, or something else that is not derived from milk. As mentioned True Nutrition has a pretty good range of products. I have found TN powders to be lacking in mixability and taste however.
If you can tolerate dairy pretty well and you have the budget, go for a grass-fed whey without a lot of additives as the others mentioned.
I personally have a pretty low budget so I use the CytoSport Whey (80/20 mix of concentrate to isolate). I get it at Costco for about $6/lb which is a really good deal. It is one of the best tasting proteins I've used and it mixes really well. It not quite as high-quality as some other more expensive proteins but I only use protein for peri-workout shakes so it's not a big part of my intake anyways.

i don't lift heavy as i'm not trying to be the biggest dude in the room. i'm pretty lean as is (i jog every night, lift moderate/light weights in the morning, and play basketball or swim every other day) and i'm not trying to bulk, should i be drinking protein shakes every day? i admit on days where i'm extremely busy i skip breakfast and just get coffee or something, should i substitute this for a protein shake?
Negatives of regular protein shakes: Unnatural ingredients like flavourint, etc.
Buy an organic, unflavoured protein shake, grass fed, hormone free and drink it after hardcore workouts and also if you have to hurry in the morning make a quick healthy smoothie with organic protein powder.
It takes 3 minutes to make.
cool, thanks. but do protein shakes keep me lean? i seem to be getting mixed responses. it appears to me that protein shakes are for dudes who lift heavy and want to get big and bulk... if so, that's not what i'm looking for.

seriously?
I can't believe this has to be explained but you don't get big or bulky by taking in a protein shake. All a protein shake is, is an efficient way to get your protein intake up, I take in 250 grams of protein a day, eating that amount of protein in chicken in a day id wanna kill myself, I throw in 2-3 shakes a day and it makes hitting my number cake. It's simple math, your body to maintain its weight needs x amount of calories, if you want it to get bigger, you need to add calories to x, if you want to lose weight you subtract calories from x. A shake with 50 grams of protein, a good quality protein in water will have maybe 250 calories. Work that into your macro plan...if you need 2000 cals a day to maintain weight and you take 2 shakes a day youve got 500 cals covered you got 1500 to play with the rest of the day and you'll maintain. If you're just eating like normal and adding 2 shakes a day you're adding 500 cals to your normal routine and you'll put on weight. So no a shake in itself won't make you anything, it's what you do with your diet as a whole and your training as a whole that will dictate what you'll look like, a shakes just one tool in your diet arsenal.

Any benefits of it being natural would be lost anyway through the heat and processing. The fillers and chemicals are things to look for. Indeed going 'unflavoured', or 'pure' is best even though it tastes like dog shit.
Anybody have experiences in buying wholesale bulk?
somewhat inaccurate.
Cheap protein is garbage and does not metabolize well.
Organic UN-heated protein is best.
Flavor should not be a concern if you buy the high quality good stuff.
Also DO NOT REPEAT DO NOT DRINK OR EAT RAW EGG WHITES ! you are doing more harm than good. YOKES RAW, Egg whites cooked !
and please do not follow what professional bodybuilders do ! those guys take so many short cuts and have so much bad habits that it does not serve the average person well.

As for pro lifters taking short cuts, I assume you're talking gear, but if you're talking diet, there are no short cuts with a persons diet the rules are universal, dont know what you're implying there?
I'm talking about nutrition and you have it backwards. Pasteurization DESTROYS nutrients and reduces nutrient availability.
Pasteurization of any type of food is bad.
Consuming Raw EGG YOKES is very healthy, very safe and has the highest nutrient BIO-AVAILABILITY.
Egg whites on the other hand contain avidin which is a nutrient blocker. Egg whites raw or pasteurized should NEVER be consumed unless cooked.
@ kosko
Raw milk and protein doesn't need to be cleaned and cooked. Cows that are fed an unnatural diet of grains become susceptible to infection and sickness (cows are biologically designed to eat grass not grains). When cows get sick from their unnatural diet their milk becomes disease ridden and must be pasteurized. That is why you want to eat organic grass fed meat.
As far as protein goes...unheated protein from a grass fed cow is actually helpful and loaded with helpful nutrients that have not been destroyed by the heating (pasteurization) process. protein powders do not need to be refrigerated.
