My Rio trip fell through. Cant do Rio in five days so I am thinking Costa Rica or Panama, Trini might be in the mix too. Starting to think about panama more. Want to lock in a flight Saturday. Will let you guys no whats up.

The cycle of disrespect can start with just an appetizer.

Has anyone ever successfully opened a bank account there? According to online sources you need certain documents like a recommendation letter from your current bank and a local address. Any way to circumvent these requirements?

Haven't been to these two yet but I was comparing them for an upcoming trip. Most of what I read said they were similar but Panama was less expensive and less Americanized. Copa airlines is based in Panama City so easy access to a lot of other LTA cities.

Panama City is dope. One of my favorite places. Panama is far less touristy than Costa Rica.

If you go to Panama City, you may want to consider splitting your trip between there and Bocas del Toro. You can catch a quick 1-hr charter flight for like $100 or so r/t. Otherwise, you're looking at a 9-hr trip on the ground which I don't recommend.

Bocas has a lot of backpackers but the way it's set up is dope. Lots of islands and cheap water taxis to get you around. You can explore nature, relax, and also party.

I am lucky, Copa already has a non-stop DC (Dulles) to Panama (PTY) flight with a total duration of just under 5 hours....BUT.....

...sometimes I have business travel to Tampa and have had a couple to "downtime/no-work days" on those trips. Good to know that I can use some miles and shoot down to the 'ole P-T-Y.

Depends on how long you're planning to stay in Bocas. I was pretty much living there at one point and just got a lease. If you're going to be there for at least a couple of weeks, I'd recommend you hustle for a lease upon getting there (much cheaper), and stay in a hotel or hostel for those two nights.

If you're only doing a few days and want to score a smooth spot, I'd look into airbnb.

As for where you want to be, the main island (Isla Colon) is where the action is. The main island is pretty big and the best logistics would be anywhere on Main Street or the streets that run into it (1st, 2nd, 3rd).

But the thing is that's the least prettiest spot on the island. You would be getting away from there for any R&R. So you could cop a much nicer and more secluded spot somewhere else on the island and just take a taxi into Main Street ($5 max).

There's other islands you can get to on water taxis like Carenero, or Bastimentos. Caranero is where I lived actually and it's a short $.50 water taxi ride to Colon. If you find a spot there on airbnb, get it. There's also a very popular bar/nightclub called Aqua Lounge, which gets packed on weekends.

Let me know when you're going. I miss Panama and plan on hitting it up in a couple months or so.

HC, can you hook me up with a local in bocas to take me on a spearfishing excursion one day? What I found online looks very touristy and kind of a ripoff. I'm going strictly for R&R and am trying to stay away from the crowds and other westerners.

Don't worry. Once you get on the ground, you can negotiate all that stuff for waaaay cheaper than you find online. There's tons of guys competing for that kind of business and you can workout a rate that you would never find online. Just head to the docks and offer a number to the guys you see hanging around. They'll take it. You can even just offer to pay locals some fuel money to join them on a spearfishing expedition.

I do shit like that all the time. When I did Machu Picchu trek in Peru, I waited until I got to Cusco to make my booking. I scored a 4-day trek, all meals and lodging included plus admission to MP, for only $160. There were people I met who booked in their home country ahead of time who paid anywhere from three to six times more.

PM me when your dates firm up and I'll connect you with some locals I know out there.

Haha I actually know that guy. He's got a bunch of vids about places around the world. His comments on Bocas are spot on. It's a backpacker party destination surrounded by dope nature. What other spots are on your radar?

I watched some of his other videos to.. seems like hes living the dream. I'm pondering going back to Asia, The Philippines and China. I think I would be being lazy if I did tho cause those are the only places overseas I have traveled. I really like the set up I had going in the Phils tho and I got a childhood friend living over in China I crash with an that's pretty cool. I like how close Panama is and that it uses the US dollar and pretty nature type things. Thought about hitting up Peru and Costa Rica as well cause I have herd people call them the Philippines of South America ha. Spain and Italy are on my radar to. Shit really I am almost open for anything... I will prally end up making a last minute decision and going all in. That's how I ended up in the Philippines and it was great.

I really wanna hit up Colombia and travel South America. I may be paranoid or buying into media hype but I'm concerned with MS-13 being pretty abundant in most of South America. I wouldn't be so worried about it if I didn't have a tattoo that comes up on the back of my neck that's a Latin Kings tattoo (I had no idea when I got it, I'm from a small lame town I didn't know what a Latin King was) But apparently a crown with 5 points is a Latin King tattoo... I had cops and correctional officers ask me about it when I was out in public years after I got it that's how I found out its apparently a gang tattoo. I can't imagine trying to explain to some MS-13 members somewhere in South America that I'm not in their rival gang....fml
