Guys,

GManifesto was recently made fun of in a recent thread for traveling richly:

"GManifesto is the worlds biggest baller and player and 3.5K is nothing"

There's a common theme on this forum that traveling poorly is a good thing. $10 a night hostels and the such. Common now, lets be honest with ourselves, traveling richly is so much nicer.

Now let me just say that I have a lot of respect for those that travel for 6 months on a $3k budget. They are living the dream. A dream that most high paid individuals only dream of, because they don't have the time.

But lets not get caught up in this "poor man's" mentality that plagues this forum, and backpackers in general. As men we should all be aspiring to live like GManifesto. Why the hell not!

of course traveling richly is more fun then staying at a hostel and sharing a room w/8 random people. no arguments here. i just have the sneaky feeling G manifesto isnt who he advertises. people that shoot off their mouth that much are either full of shit or major douchebags. w/him its a coin flip but i'm guessing the former not the latter

Maybe "good" was the wrong word. But there definitely is a common theme that traveling poorly is "acceptable". And when you feel its "good enough" and you lounge around with a bunch of other guys that feel its "good enough", then there is little motivation to strive for better. Content breeds apathy.

It is reverse snobbery.

Happens all the time.

For the record, I have traveled, when I was younger on very limited budgets. I have lived in Central American jungles on Mangoes for months at a time before traveling there seemed "safe".

And of course, I don't pop champagne everywhere I go. (Truthfully, I rarely if ever drink champagne out at night. Although I have been known to pop a cork back at my crib or hotel with a couple girls) I was one of the first people to diss the idiocy of bottle service http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2007/07/bot...tlife.html

But it is true, I really haven't stayed in hostels since I was 26 or so. I eat at top tier restaurants often. I wear custom suits. I have worked hard in life and make dough.

$3500 is not a lot of money for a 3 week trip.

I guess it is all relative.

I see two sides to this debate and both are pretty solid. I dont know if anybody on here is actually making a case that it's better to travel broke so I'll lay on out.

My brother just came back from 8 months in South America and it seemed that almost all of his good stories and adventures somehow came from being forced to stretch every penny/colon/quetzal/lempira to the extreme.

For example you're forced to get off the tourist path for true local cuisine, and you may spend several hours shopping around at different hostels and meet some cool people in the process. I think the general advantage is it forces you to break out of your comfort zone and interact more. Couchsurfing is an example of something great that came from people being cheap or broke.

Of course, I'm not saying its truly more advantageous, just playing devils advocate. Comida Tipica for thought

I've done both. Last time i did the hostel route to see as many places as possible. This time I rented a room in a nice part of town. Both have their pros/cons, but i have many more stories from the cheap route.

I think you can have fun traveling on a low budget and a higher budget. You are traveling for pete's sake.

My original point (that people took offense to, or really just our little buddy Brian) was that $3500 for 3 weeks is not "rolling heavy".

It is not. That is $166 per day.

For hotel, meals, nightlife and whatever else.

BA is kind of cheap, but on $166 per day, you are coming light. Real light.

I stand by that.

I have money to travel via flying and hotels, but by far my most memorable experiences were when I took buses and stayed in hostels.

I don't think anyone, given the option, would choose to travel on a small budget as opposed to a large budget. You play the hand you're dealt; if you've only got $2000 and want to make a vacation out of it, you've got to stay at hostels and cook all of your own meals. The way I see it, the option to travel in opulence -- staying in lux hotels and eating at world-renowned restaurants -- will always be there. But I can only travel like a vagrant, enjoying all of the accompanying experiences, as a young man.

Everybody has their own threshold of comfort level when traveling. Some people simply cannot travel anywhere without staying in a "nice" hotel. So everyone has to do whatever their comfort level is. I've stayed in posh accommodations and I've slept in hostels so nasty I literally didn't want to touch anything and was afraid to turn out the lights for fear of roaches. Like the others I can say my most interesting times came from budget travel, if for any reason because you meet people, and the type of people willing to throw on a backpack and fly off to some country alone by themselves are usually some of the more cool and interesting people to talk to.

I'll tell you one thing, when I got sick for a few days in Thailand(don't know what it was but the symptoms felt like Japanese encephalitis), I was never felt so glad to be staying in a luxury hotel. I imagine being sick in a hostel bed with people constantly opening and closing the door, turning lights on and off, and talking and no privacy to be pure hell.

Anyone staying for more than two weeks in BA should just rent an apartment. You can get something like a furnished one bedroom condo in palermo for $800 per month. Anyway, that's for another thread..

the best advice i can give is this: if you are going to be in one place longer then a week try and rent an apartment. its cheaper then a hotel and will give you the feel of living like a local. secondly, if you are going to be city hopping dont preplan everything months in advance, especially if you arent flying. see whats open and available. stay in a hostel if you're going to be somewhere for a day and only gonna sleep there. if you need a day or two to chill or feel run down go upscale and stay at a nice hotel. take it as it comes, dont try and preplan it or micromanage your trip.

What is "within your means" is not a permanently set figure. It is under your direct control. Everyone here puts a lot of time, money, and energy into traveling, talking about travel, researching travel, reading travel books etc. If we put a piece of that into making money, we would be able to travel more and better.

Example: Roosh. He created a whole online community via his blog, forums, and travel guides. He has created a lot of value for all of us, and that value is worth money. There are a number of ways to monetize on that value (sell ads, sell products, sell information). Roosh has chosen to sell an eBook. Roosh, I hope that book is creating shit loads of money for you and allowing you to travel longer and better.
