What do You Guys Over 30 Do To "Stay Current?"
I noticed in a lot of the threads talking about game and aging bachelorhood, people mention the need to "stay current." Obviously it's important to be somewhat in touch with mainstream culture as you age if you still want to vibe with and bang younger women.

But with the world changing so fast these days, it's very well getting harder and harder for older guys to stay tuned. Not to mention all the noise these days. So what do you guys do to consciously keep with the times?

Social media has gone a long way in helping address this problem. As it has been said, 30 is the new 20. Follow the right people on twitter, maintain contact with friends that are slightly younger, use Spotify and connect to it with Facebook so that you can see what music your younger or more "cultured" friends are listening to. Stay on top of the forum, follow the right news, and keep traveling. It's important to maintain a web of contacts of all different kinds of people so that little gets by you, at least compared to the next man or average joe.

I'm not 30 yet, but I think this matters much less than you'd expect. Feigning an interest in teeny bopper music or something will probably look really incongruent.

Can you think of a time when "not being current" costed you women? I can't think of any stories like that or this site or any related game site.

Although I'd imagine if you take a girl back to your place and start playing music through piano rolls or listening to ragtime on 78rpm records it might weird her out a bit, but I don't think any of us would try something that ridiculous.

3 things:

1. Bang much younger women consistently
2. Read TMZ at least 1x per month, and susbcribe to RSS feeds that deal with fashion trends.
3. Grab a younger sibling and hang out with him/her more often. I have a 20 year old cousin, who loves bangin' girls as much as me, and he keeps me in the loop with young trends, times and of course - younger women.

Actually, I'm finding that A) as mentioned this doesn't matter so much (particularly if you give off a mild vibe of "eh, that's interesting, but I have more important things to spend my hours on"), and b) right now I'm teaching college, which helps a lot since I'm surrounded by younger people (actually that's an awesome idea anyway in terms of keeping you with a bit more of a "young outlook").

Unless you're a hermit that doesn't have a tv, internet or access to books, magazines or newspapers, what's current is all around you, whether you have true interest in it or not. I love music, but I really don't listen to the radio. I play what I want to play. Sometimes I'm late to the party with what's hot, but I get there eventually. It's not a major concern.

Young musicians are often now really programmers, and can't compete with more seriously and rigorously trained ones, like me. They also have fewer stories to tell, and therefore are inferior as songwriters except for some freak analogous to Bob Dylan who made great albums at 24.

The idea that young people are superior, and thus to be "kept up with" is a conceit of the young. Culture is declining and coarsening except for computers.

A serious and trained thinker who knows history is always ahead of, and to a large extent outside of the time of the pathetic herd.

I'm not current. Just about any celeb could walk into my office and i'd have no clue. The cartoon channel or travel is on at my house 24-7. Reading this forum is about the only thing that puts me even close and still I have to google half the things and people you guys are talking about. I don't watch the news or care unless there's a hurricane which gets me pumped up. I don't read the paper or any magazines either. I didn't know what a hipster was until Lothario explained it me a couple months ago.

I've found that younger girls desire me precisely because I'm "serious."

Ditto that. The younger girls treat me with a sort of reverence and respect and try to keep up with my frame of reference. That said, I do try to peek at the chick crack news item now and then, just to see what the sheeple are up to.

Right on. I appreciated both the comments with tips on staying current here and also the ones that reminded me it's really not something to worry about at all. Nice to have both sides of the coins make sense.

Exactly my experience. And I think it's important to be yourself otherwise you'll be an epic fail.
In my experience, it's not worked when I tried to use a style that isn't natural to me (hair, clothes, conversation).

In the past, I've tried to adopt clothing styles that weren't me and the result was extra clothes hanging in my closet that I never used because 1) they didn't feel right and 2) I couldn't mix and match them with my other clothes because they were such a departure from my natural style. It's like Mark Zuckerberg trying to dress in suits every day. While he could learn how to wear a great suit, it wouldn't be natural so he would look clumsy and uncomfortable.

I've tried to hold conversations with dumb women but it never lasts. I don't know how to keep the conversation going about superficial topics in which I have no interest (gossip, etc).

As an older guy - older being 30+ - I have yet to meet a 20-something girl who thinks it's bad that i don't know the latest reality show on Bravo. But I am in the DC area where the average woman is angry and bitter. I know a few women in southern cali and they are much more colorful and into the latest celebrity gossip and fashions.

And speaking of style and the DC area, I pay attention to what other men wear so I can make sure I dress differently. Look at any of those DC pics from the other threads and all the guys dress the same (button-down shirt untucked with jeans, or v-neck sweater over button-down shirt).

"The idea that young people are superior, and thus to be "kept up with" is a conceit of the young. Culture is declining and coarsening except for computers."

This is a function business and media. The younger members of our society are continually catered to. American society doesn't hold reverence for the mature/elderly like other cultures do. If you're a parent, you need to know what they're up to. For the rest of us, we can be selective about what we choose to pay attention to. I generally stay immersed in culture, so I'm continually aware that much of it is complete nonsense. You really have to dig to find value.
