RE: Your Thoughts on Video Games
These are all interesting thoughts on the matter. It sounds like some of you are able to control your amount of game time. I guess that's just not me. Maybe I'm just too easily addicted. I was going to limit myself to games that I could play socially, but even those might suck me in. I think the only reason I've been drifting towards playing them again is because I'm getting bored. It's an indication that I need to do more fulfilling things. Maybe I should pick up an instrument or something.

I think having simple games around for chicks to play with is a good idea though. Definitely something I will keep in mind.

Do what ever you like bro or what makes you happy. Life is too short not to.

Dont go playing the trumpet or violin because it looks better or supposedly enhances you as a person if you have no interest in it or dont enjoy it.

Me personally I enjoy playing video games.

Along with traveling, gambling, working out, clubbing, playing/watching sports, going to concerts ect.

I incorporate EVERYTHING I enjoy in my life!

RE: Your Thoughts on Video Games
I love RPGs, and played them at an early age, but I think they've warped my approach to life. Whenever I've accomplished something, I immediately start thinking about what's next, just like how you 'level up' in every RPG. When I play games, I have a burning need to 'level up' even though I know it makes no fucking difference to real life. My latest example was trying out Khan Academy, a site for online learning, and blowing through most of the math practice lessons, even though they were all very basic and hardly taught me anything, just because I'd get some meaningless 'badges.'

That is a promising technique though. It's called 'gamification,' and it's becoming trendy. The idea is to make tasks or goals have video-game like reward structures to motivate people to perform.

You'll see people spend hours upon hours on a game, just because you made a "top scores" leaderboard. Not criticizing those people, but it's just a facet of human nature. Games of course are new, and it's hard to anticipate the long term effects on people, especially when they pick it up at an early age.

Here's an article from the famous evolutionary biologist Geoffrey Miller, author of a couple books recommended by PUAs. According to him, videogames may explain why we haven't met any aliens.

Quote:Basically, I think the aliens don’t blow themselves up; they just get addicted to computer games. They forget to send radio signals or colonize space because they’re too busy with runaway consumerism and virtual-reality narcissism. They don’t need Sentinels to enslave them in a Matrix; they do it to themselves, just as we are doing today. Once they turn inwards to chase their shiny pennies of pleasure, they lose the cosmic plot. They become like a self-stimulating rat, pressing a bar to deliver electricity to its brain’s ventral tegmental area, which stimulates its nucleus accumbens to release dopamine, which feels…ever so good.

It's funny you bring that Southpark episode up, my buddy Tristan Pope is the guy who shot, compiled, and edited most of the in-game footage. WoW was a life sucker for me, never again.

RE: Your Thoughts on Video Games
I haven't played a video game in years, but when I played I loved first person shooters on PC. Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, Rainbow Six. They can definitely be addicting. If I ever got back into them, I'd probably grab a couple of shooter games and get into those.

Very true. Whenever I think of video games the first thing that pops up in my head isn't very pleasant. I totally forgot about things like Wii

When I was a kid, I had Sonic! Good days...

Now I have a Wii, which I barely touch it. I still like videogames, Street Fighters, UFC, Guitar Hero thing, but I have tons of other things to taste it before is too late. I may like play, but there are tons of others that I still don't know if I do, and I want to experience them also. Most of the players takes it too seriously.

RE: Your Thoughts on Video Games
I love RPG's--they're like books, cartoons, and movies only you get to control them. The Squaresoft games of the 90's and early 2000's are classics that current game companies struggle to follow.

Action and adventure--same thing. Mario series, Metal Gear series, Mega Man series, Resident Evil series, etc. etc.

Fighting games -- a safe way to release aggression without hurting another person physically. I will kick your pussy, fireball-throwing ass as Zangief in Street Fighter 4.

The above 3 game categories made me appreciate Japanese creativity

In RTS games like Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 -- I love the mind games involving builds and unit choices and kicking ass because you outsmarted and overwhelmed the enemy. My Orc Blademaster will harass the shit out of your workers and my Zerglings will overrun your base as I mine more resources than you.

But at the moment I choose not to invest time and money in them as much, so I can focus more on developing the kind of "game" we talk about here and myself so I can truly live my life.
