The rule for Americans is 16 OR the local age of consent rule if it is higher. So in most states you'd be fine.

I don't have any idea how girls react to a guy being American, probably wont make a difference. They like Europeans better for sure though except for Brits unless you have a posh accent.

No clue on the Latino question, but Australian girls like girls everywhere love Brazilian guys so you could pretend to be Brazilian. The Latin "look" isn't exotic at all here though because of Southern European immigration.

The best thing to relate this to is for where Michael Moore becries the faults of the U.S. as excess corporatism, Australians will instead extrapolate this as nationalist virtue.

My own experience I can pass on was that when I visited the U.S., I visited one of the clubs that play Australian football. I got a shirt of theirs, then back in Australia, wore it to a dance venue. I faked an American accent and said I was an American in Perth for two weeks on a football training exchange.

I was rather active on the dance floor, and when I would say to some bitter attention whore I was American, the response would be denigrating along the lines of 'well that explains everything'.

African Americans won't however, they viewed as a somewhat oppressed minority. They instead get coveted for their 'urban cool'.

There is no large scale narrative on latino Americans in Australia, maybe some views regarding drugs as a cross over from news over Mexico, so you can frame your own latino story.

1. Australian politics is more left-wing then the U.S, but on the whole we would be more conservative than the North East, California, Canada or the social democracies of Scandinavia.

2. Perth is pretty conservative, along with Adelaide. Labour/Greens perform pretty poorly in your parts. If you hate on Perth girls for being liberal then you need to spend some time on the East Coast. Hipsters can be found heavily in Melbourne, but Perth is not a hipster stronghold at all nor is it a liberal bastion. People in Melbourne and Sydney make jokes that Perth is where white middle class racists move to escape Asians. So I don't see what on Earth your ranting about.

For Americans:

American troops on shore leave can get bad raps in Sydney, Perth and Darwin because they go absolutely ape shit and scare the shit out of girls in their hostels etc with their antics. But overall girls won't turn up their nose if your American, they don't really care. If anything they might dig your accent.

I may currently reside in Perth, but you make the mistake of assuming I am a Perth native. I was born in Sydney and moved away when I was 24. I have spent time in the 10 largest Australian cities except Geelong. I am speaking from a more generalised Australian perspective than Perth. W.A's conservatism is a national outlier, being less than 10% of the countries population and all.

i love melbourne but i'll be honest - the nightlife is not ideal for scoring with hot chicks. why? this is my experience:

1) most hot chicks will be in the clubs. the clubs are notoriously competitive and the guys are fairly macho and physically well built, particularly jocks and those of southern european descent (hence i rarely go). this can make for a sinister vibe depending on where you go (e.g., most of chapel st). there's a guy on youtube called zyzz who died from roids at 21yo last year but is idolised by many clubgoers here - his persona replicated by large packs of young men is what you're frequently up against. i've never been to CQ, boutique or alumbra but i'm sure there's plenty of hot girls hiding away here in the top end of town.

2) the inner-city bars are top rate, really cool, but not huge, and the quantity of quality girls is limited. this is where i usually go on weekends. there are hot girls here but not many to target, and even fewer without boyfriends. places i'm referring to: transport, the toff, emerald peacock, miss libertines, lounge, carlton club, prudence, eurotrash, the croft institute, section 8, crazy horse bazaar, workshop, cho gao, bimbo's

3) uni bars are scummy and have almost non-existent talent. almost every quality chick has a boyfriend, particularly if they go to a residential college and it's not week 1 or 2 of the semester. PA's, rochester, perseverance, pugg's, public bar, turf club

this might sound likely a slightly odd observation but i've always considered the average guy in melbourne to be better looking, and with more going for him, than the average girl, who does not have a good body or face and probably does not play sport. the average well-dressed guy in a melbourne bar has game. i actually didn't appreciate this until i went overseas and found a pleasant lack of competition and could game the top girls at will - and there were more of them too. if you come here, don't expect it to be easy.

so those are the negatives.

as for the positives, this sort of competitive environment makes your game tight. i improved my physique, my attire, my knowledge of music, bars and culture in general to get ahead and it has been paying dividends for the past 7 months. melbourne is ridiculously well stocked for daygame and dating girls. there's a big daygame scene here and i wonder how it compares internationally. there would be an average of 10-15 guys per week daygaming around bourke st, fed square and melbourne central and probably many more during summer. all those club girls are in the city during the day. many of the hot ones are, unsurprisingly, european backpackers. the vast crowds of asians are really average (30% of melbourne CBD's residential population), and i say that with an appreciation of what asian quality looks like here in bangkok.

hypergamy is awesome because you know to tick the boxes for what women want when you chat them up: well educated, good career prospects, inner-city location, well dressed, confident, add in rogue personality for good measure, and you get dates quite easily. are they single? do you seem like you could be a catch? good work, you get dates.

a healthy appreciation of the local music scene and intimate knowledge of inner-city bars and events means these dates typically lead to sex, within 1-2 dates. i always set the meet up time for around 8-10pm.

melbourne also has some really cool hip hop places: miss libertines on wednesday and crazy horse bazaar on thursday, brown alley weekends, most notably. these venues lack the aggression you find in mainstream clubs, very cool, laid back, lots of dope east africans (mainly somalis) who are easy to get on with and happy to share/sell you weed.

so that's my contribution and own unique perspective. of course reasonable minds may differ but it will be agreed by all that it's a pretty classy city.

They start drinking around midday and most of the women are pissed off their face by 4pm and are right to go. Plenty of 8s and higher on offer. Even someone with complete rubbish game can pull a 7 and I speak from experience on doing that from a decade ago. Will set you back around $50 to get on course but well worth it.

Thats 2 of the best from Melbourne.

College Lawn is a sports bar. Its well known as the place to watch rugby in Melbourne. Gets ridiculously packed for Super 15 finals and any tri nation match. You cant move when the mighty All Blacks play the pitiful Wallabies.

Not a bad list but a few omissions from this list. The Belgian Beer Cafe (Bluestone) on St Kilda Road is missing. This place packs out on a friday and is loaded with your corporate types. Its the place where bands like ACDC, Inxs, Split Enz, Crowded House, Powderfinger and other big name Aussie/NZ bands started out. And its a pretty cool place just to chill and have a few beers in the afternoon as well being right by the St Kilda foreshore.

List also seem to focus on Chapel St, the Eastern Side of the city and St Kilda. There is a hell of a lot more to Melbourne than this.

One area of Melbourne not mentioned is the Docklands. This is the new boom area of Melbourne. Lots of bars and restaurants in this area and a few night clubs. There is a whole strip of around 20 restaurants in the Docklands by the water.

Couple of bars to mention are:

Docked - Spanish tapa's bar. Small bar - always has a young crowd, mainly corporate types from the banks nearby and people who live in the many apartment blocks in the Docklands

The Nixon - Named after the infamous US president. Sports bar which has an ever changing crowd being located very close to Etihad Stadium. Meals are awesome and well priced here. Best time for crowds are 2-3 hours before a game and pretty much straight after a game until closing.

Waterview - place packs out with corporate professionals after hours. Located on the ground floor of the NAB building.

Alumbra - The best nightclub in the Docklands area. Located on Central Pier. Very pricey. A lot of channel 7 and 9 celebrities drink there.

Docklands basically has around 25-30 bars/restaurants all within close walking distance of each other. Has plenty of high rise apartment blocks as well. Has a mall although its not too popular. Has what is going to be the Melbourne Eye (same as London and Singapore ones) but it broke 2 weeks after opening (3 days of 44, 45 and 46 degrees celcius buckled it). Its currently being reconstructed.

Cant disagree with you there. Melbourne Club Scene can be a very angry violent scene. Some people just go to the clubs looking to pick fights. Nearly every week you will read about some 20yo knocked out and left bleeding on the street. The amount of violence related arrests with city bars on a weekly basis is not pretty (around 20 a week). Stopped going to clubs myself a long time ago for this reason.

For Americans reading, gun crime is negligible in Australia. It's all king hits (getting KO'd in the face with the chance of your head hitting the concrete) or getting stabbed. Funny thing is though that while Melbourne's CBD and South Yarra (Chapel St) get a bad rap down under they're still safer than Surfers Paradise in the Gold Coast and both cities by far have a lower crime rate than comparable American cities. Our definition of dangerous is very different to yours.

Its the aggressive nature inside the club thats the problem in Australia. Outside the club, sure the only thing you need to watch out for is a king hit but when 2 guys go for the same girl in the club usually results in an aggressive mexican stand off

There is bugger all discrimination against Indians in Melbourne. None more than you get in most cities. Indians or other minority groups might find it a little harder getting into a club for example but most clubs around the world screen like this anyway. Some of the bogans and rednecks in the lower class outer suburbs have been known to do a few racially motivated bashing's of Indian's but nothing more than that. The Indian press likes to sensationalize every little incident like this and blow it out of proportion but it happens rarely. Last one they blew out of proportion was when some Indian guy was run over by a car. They spent a few weeks screaming for blood, claiming Melbourne was dangerous for all Indian's and how racist the city was. They even had a rally with a few thousand Indian's at Federation Square. Then they arrested the culprit and it was another Indian guy who was driving the car.

For the record, I look Indian but I'm actually Sri Lankan. What LifeBeginsAt40 said is 100% correct. Asians and Indians aren't discriminated against at all. We have a pretty harmonious racial atmosphere here. The people who don't like Indians the most are there fellow Indians... Because the ones who were born and raised here hate the FOB (Fresh off the Boat) arrivals for making them look bad. A girl will occasionally assume you're a nerd sometimes, but you'll just have to overcome that with basic game, muscles or good dress sense. Or all three. Same goes for Asian dudes.

Also, the whole Indian students getting robbed thing was bullcrap. Dumb foreign students were playing around with their shiny laptops at train stations known to be dangerous. The people who robbed them were either East African refugees or South East Asians. Both of which are the main ethnic groups along with Indians in the part of Melbourne where all this happened (Dandenong/Springvale/Noble Park).

Young women here just like everywhere else love Hip-Hop and there are few Black dudes here. We probably have the same amount of girls with "jungle fever" as everywhere else but unlike the US, London or Toronto there are very few black dudes around to satisfy those girls. At the same time though, black dudes do get some hate here. The only time I've ever been racially abused in my life was when I was out of with an Ethiopian wing.

Also, hot brown girls here often try and be wannabe ghetto with their snapbacks and talking as if they were hood calling everybody n*gga as if they didn't eat rice and curry for dinner. Black guys visiting would do well to tap that particular niche for all it's worth.

- he has the biggest social circle i have ever seen
- most of his social circle are fashion/indie girls.
- his mates are all pretty cool
- he has exceptional people skills

if someone asked me where is the coolest place to go i could name plenty of venues - not just bars but also cafes. a lot of them exclusive or hidden away, etc.

but if they asked where they could go to meet people that love having fun i wouldn't know what to recommend. probably some venue with lots of internationals who aren't from melbourne.

bangkok by comparison has buzzing rooftop parties with 1000 people once a month and it just gets hectic. it also has khao san rd - trashy but frenetic and wild.

what does melbourne have in terms of epic parties (outside of festivals)?

Gambling is my major vice, so I love the horses and the November Spring Racing Carnival is an international draw-card, culminating in the world's greatest horse race, the Melbourne Cup.

For non-Melbournians, checkout the end of thr bridge of the left hand side of the picture. That's Federation Square, when it's nice outside and especially in Summer you have a very very high chance of finding a European tourist or an aussie from out of state sitting on the steps bored.

I think it's because we're so hipster. Sydney pulls off the fun big party vibe better than we do, especially their NYE beach parties if you don't mind a lot of cops and drunk teenagers.
