Figured I'd ask here since I know a lot of you guys have been to Brazil. I'm looking at going in January and was hoping to stay a month, but have been having a lot of trouble finding a furnished rental. I emailed around ten agencies, got responses from two and they offered me apartments for $5k that I wouldn't spend $1k on. I know these are tourist rates, but anyone have any other suggestions at getting an apartment (not room) in a safe area? How much should I expect to pay? I'm considering just getting an apartment in Buenos Aires for a longer period of time at this point and taking a vacation to Rio.

I rented an apartment in Rio short term for a decent price.

Thanks, I've heard mixed things about Cocacabana, but it seems to be more in my price range. Would you recommend staying there? Have heard its better because there are nothing but tourists in Ipanema, but also that its not as safe.

Copa is better imo. Its where I stayed. I didnt like Ipanema, to many bitch shields and stuckup females.

It is safe. I walked all over Copa at all hours of the night and morning and never had any problems. Just stick to the main roads and use common sense and be observant of your surroundings.

Copa all the way. agree with dashck 100%.Leme is a good call also.

just don't do stupid things that will put a target in yr back (like an american last month who was shot 4 times in Copa after withdrawing 14 grand in cash from a currency agency in centro,and refused to give the money to the thugs)

I saw some on there for $50-$80 a night. Could probably get a deal on a whole month. You also didn't post a budget so it's really hard for people to help you.

If you can, try avoiding the high season as prices go up significantly. In January you'll be right in the middle of rip-off season which lasts until the beginning of March.

I've seen this site: http://www.aluguetemporada.com.br (brazilian version from the international homeaway sites), perhaps it can be useful. Private owners post there.

By the way, a friend of mine uses home-exchange programs, he lends and apartment of his in exchange for places to stay in Europe, perhaps this could be an option too, who knows.

There is a cheap place, however, in Rio, the Island of Paquetá, where your budget might go a long way. I thought about posting a thread about this place a while ago as it is practically unknown to outsiders. It's very scenic but in decay, plus you'll need the ferry boat (about 50 minutes) to go back and forth and you'll have to stick to their timetables.
