I have a friend that had to get rubber band litigation, to tie off a hemorrhoid he had. Apparently , the hemorrhoid looked like an eye staring out at you from his inners, that caused him bleeding. Way genetic, so you don't have to be lifting weights, or straining, to get them. I thought the finger was bad..... They push a gun in your ass, then shoot the rubber band out, to tie off the hemorrhoid, essentially choking off the supply. Oh the things I look forward to....not!

Had to go to a urologist one month ago. I looked for a female doctor. She was blond. Hot. And young.

Best part when she told me: "ok, let me see".

In my mind I though "this is just awesome".

Back when I was about 11 or 12 I was having bad abdominal pain and my pediatrician thought it might be an appendicitis. One of the ways they tested for it was to do a rectal exam. At 12 years old, having a man's fingers up my ass was the most disturbing experience of my life. Hell, I am 34 now, and I still don't think that I have experienced anything more disturbing.

I remember leaving the examination room and not wanting to talk to anyone. It felt like I got molested. That shit fucked me up in the head for about 6 months. It is funny because this was a TOTALLY LEGITIMATE medical procedure. He wasn't doing anything pervy, it is just that there is no way to be comfortable with another man's fingers up your ass for the first time, unless you are gay.

I had an exam done when I was 27, it was hilarious. The ER doctor was trying to figure out a medical mystery (later turned out to be a giant kidney stone...a story for another day, I have no sympathy for bitches and childbirth) and he made his way through the diagnosis flowchart, got to the end and says "ugh darn, sorry I'm down to prostate exam for diagnosis." Silence, glove snap, discomfort "nope, nothing wrong there either" and I replied "yeah and you didn't even buy me dinner first". He released me shortly afterwards.

I didn't find that procedure that traumatic, just uncomfortable, like I felt like puking when he was poking around in there. Also, if you are worried about awkward, go see the urologist who did my vasectomy. While sitting on a chair in front of me, while I was standing and he was juggling my balls during a pre exam he kept on saying "oh perfect, perfect anatomy, this will be a very easy procedure" That was more awkward than a prostate exam and later having my balls sliced up was more painful than a finger than my butt too.

A digitial rectal exam becomes an annual event. They need to verify your colon lining is smooth and undamaged. They can potentially find polyps and all sorts of stuff. Prostate cancer is very common; my uncle and a friend had it. It is also very slow-growing, so they don't operate in older men. But in younger men they can definitely spot it early and save your life.

DRE (digital rectal exam) is meant to feel your prostate.

a finger can't assess the health of the colon/feel polyps as it starts after the small intestine and is god knows how many feet long. The colon can only be checked with a colonoscopy (camera) after taking an enema the night before. That test is recommended annually AFTER the age of 50. Perhaps earlier if there is a strong family history of colon cancer.

There is no reason for an annual DRE in a young man whatsoever. Even in older man, prostate cancer screening is highly debatable as it's typically very slow growing and often times no treatment is warranted. If symptoms develop, that's another story and get checked out. But healthy young guy, I wouldn't.

High fiber diets will help to clean out your colon and prevent the growth of polyps and cancer. So you shouldn't need to have a digital rectal exam very often.

In fact, that could be a good tagline for Oatmeal to help drive sales.

Prostate cancer is no joke,guys! Until there's another way to screen just go with the digital exam-I've had mine. My neighbour died by rectal cancer that spread to his stomach;offhead I can name 5 older guys who checked out that way.

So much fear and misinformation on this topic. My brother DIED of colon cancer in his early fifties. He was slim, ate right, plenty of exercise - he just got unlucky. The doctors thought it was Crohn's disease and he wasn't diagnosed properly until the cancer had reached stage IV - terminal. A DRE would not have saved him, because it's looking for a totally different cancer. Paying close attention to changes in his bowel habits, checking for blood in his stools, and making sure that his doc was super-switched on and thorough, MIGHT have saved him.

Prostate cancer, on the other hand, is often slow-growing (though some forms are aggressive). If you have urinary symptoms of BPH (google it) then that would merit a DRE at any age. It's not gay, it's a precaution that could save your life (and your sex life - try blasting all over a woman's face after you've had your prostate removed).

Yep 40 seems to be the 'international' standard.

However I think that proactive prostate protection needs to start once you hit 30. This is the protocol that I use.

-50 mg of zinc (optizinc is great) keeps dht out of the prostate
-DIM 200 mg - Reduces E2 (bad cancer causing estrogen) in the blood and stops it from entering the prostate
- Pumpkin see oil - 1 teaspoon per day

It is also very important to keep your testosterone level at the upper end of the physiological range. If you guys want i'll make another thread outlining my TRT (testosterone replacement therapy) protocol.

This forum is pretty epic with its level of machismo, so it's no surprise to me to see all these fearful posts about a prostate exam.

Really guys? It's YOUR body. Take a shower, soap up your hand, and touch yourself there and you'll find it's not the end of the world or that you become gay as a result. Heck, you're missing out if you've never let a girl do this to you while getting a BJ.

A friend of mine is a urologist. You have to realize doctors have seen everything, and a prostate exam is something akin to a looking in your ears or throat to them. If you're old enough to need one, or have one for any other reason, you really don't need to act like a homophobic 13 year old about it. It's for your health and there's far worse things you could have going wrong in your body than your doctor's finger in you for a few seconds annually.

PSA is a poor test - lots of false negatives and positives. PSA is better than nothing but a DRE allows the doc to feel the size and texture of the prostate.

When I get fourthy I happily have an exam. I think many nurses do the exams here.
