Beirut is one of my favourite bands, I play many of their songs on the guitar, "chicks dig it" hehe

Empire of the Sun is cool,

Mana is mexican, right? Haven't heard them in a while...

Gotta check those that I don't know.

An old time favourite of mine; another heavy badass Japonese band: Dir En Grey

If you like Ratatat, you'd probably like Starfucker. I think they are out of Portland.

Other relatively less known bands I like are:
-Seabear (Icelandic, but they sing in English)

-Tinareiwen (hard to explain...think psychedelic Touareg blues...kind of)

-the French Kicks

-Pinback
(San Diego, I think)

I reallky liked Seabear, I have a fondness for bands from Iceland.

This here is a Welsh singer who became "famous" for his song on the opening of the Mushishi anime:

Dj screw. Experimental dj who slowed down songs. Completely changed my city. I forget that some people don't know who he is outside of the south.

I think you already know about old punk since u mentioned black flag in a thread.

Fu manchu are good stoner rock. Fugazi with ian mckaye from minor threat have some real good shit out.

ha, never thought i'd see screw mentioned on this forum. brings back memories though... the weekend blunt rides while bumping A.B.N., swisha house, the jun 27th freestyle, etc. miss those days when i was an up and comer, hell i never thought i'd be saying this, but i legitimately miss houston.

anyways my contribution to the thread for all the hip hop heads....

Alpha Blondy. Big star in Africa and pretty well known in Europe, but less so in the US. Amazing in concert. (the genre is reggae/afropop, hip-hop)

This last year I've really been loving Erland Oye aka The Whitest Boy Alive:

For those of you that loved that Boards of Canada track above(as I did), you have to check out Ulrich Schnauss. He's in my list of top 5 artist ever. A fucking musical genius. The video and music is even a bit similar to one above:

He also does a lot of remixes. I love this one he did for Coldplay. A propos, the visuals somebody stuck in here don't go well with the song.

Dead Kennedys. I love that raw punk. Of course they sound a lot more clean and polished on cd's but there's something about that live energy Heart

@ Speakeasy

Boards of Canada (which is a Scottish duo) are quite something. Their favourite album of mine is Geogaddi, which is considerably more experimental than the one the song from the video was taken from.

I liked Ulrich Schnauss, good find!

If you like that vibe, I can also reccomend the following:

Christian Fennesz, an ambient/glitch/noise composer from Austria. Here in a piece from his great album Cendre with contribution from Japanese pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto:

Gui Boratto, and acclaimed Brazilian DJ specialized in minimalist trance.

And if you have some taste for noise (I do) and ambient, I'd reccomend October Language. Spacy trippy white noise.

Great thread! A lot of cool alt rock comes out of my home town of Halifax, Canada.

Check out these bands: Sloan, Winter sleep, Matt May and El torpedo, Joel Plaskett, the Trews, etc.

Back in the mid 90s, Halifax was said to be "the next Seattle", (in Rolling Stone or Spin) not too sure what happened, but it didn't blow up like some predicted.

I listen to 98% hip-hop and I like to find underground guys to listen to. Childish Gambino is good, he raps about being a nerdy Black guy and sexing Asian girls. I like Immortal Technique, he's a Peruvian socialist rapper from Harlem. He has real good content: gentrification in NYC, how cocaine gets from S. America to your local dealer, etc.

Are you into the Montreal alternative music scene? I'm into some great bands from there, I even mentioned some here before... If you know something from that region, let us know!

Will be checking the bands you mentioned.

If you guys are into death/black/thrash metal, I compiled a list of the best metal albums of 2011. Check it out:

@Pusscrook - Chromeo is awesome. Those guys write great 80s pop throwback songs. Haven't seen them live yet but I heard they're a blast.

@Houston - Love that old school punk stuff. DK, Misfits, Minor Threat, Black Flag, etc.

Bronan I read your dead celebrities list. Seth Putnam died at the ripe old age of 43. That's totally normal...

That guy was so fucked up. Half of Anal Cunt's songs are about smoking crack and shooting heroin, and Seth definitely walked the walk. The picture of him getting blown by the groupie while shooting up is awesome though.
