This is a good question and although routine is a partial answer, there's probably deep genetic causes too. I've read in monkey tribes, young males that get exiled usually die. Going to another culture where you have no place there except to the degree that the culture protects travelers is scary. Plus until you've got an independent income, for every week you leave Murka using up vacation time and not earning more money, you're just delaying whatever freedom you might eventually earn.

I know I saw Eastern Europe in my 40's, realized it was the "happy hunting grounds" and then didn't go back for like 8 years while I established an independent income-- I didn't want to waste resources going there unless I was going to be able to NOT COME BACK.

Men are trained not to admit being alone is anxiety inducing, but it is for me-- being really alone, not knowing the language, having no proven reliable contacts...

What Mixx says here touches the core of the issue IMO. If you decide to lead your own life instead of allowing yourself to be guided by the system/culture or your fears, you'll probably try to look for greener grass elsewhere.

If you want to get more out of life you will tend to go wherever (according to your own standards) you can get higher levels of satisfaction.

I'm sorry however for those who never left "the cave", those who don't know there's a whole wide world out there. I also feel for those who have to pay for a bad marriage and past mistakes. My condoleances to all of them. A minute of silence for those who have fallen on the eve of action.

P.S. Yes, Bulgarian women are great! The country is rather underrated, isn't it? The city of Varna was especially generous to me, so to speak.

I think the biggest thing is fear. I haven't traveled abroad YET but I have been to almost all points of Canada. I made an effort to try and see as much as the country as possible. Most of the journeys have come solo, I enjoy the nomad vibe of it. Our generation is to comfortable, and way to complacent. Our parents and grandparents had to move around to seek better opportunities and its foolish to think we won't have to do the same now. When I tell people I plan to bail on Canada they get this gassy look on their faces like I'm nuts and ask.. "Well..why?". Well why not. This place seems like yesterdays news to me. More action and opportunities exist elsewhere and I would feel like a fool growing to be old and not taking a chance at them.

Fear of losing what little they actually have. Most guys are afraid of losing their lousy job and their ugly girlfriend. Some think their family and friends will disown them. And then there is the language barrier for all to many people. And then there is the legal system at work in foreign countries. Residency visas vs tourist visa or investor visa ect.

It is hard work to re-establish one self in a foreign country but once done it can be great. All it takes is a little propaganda and the masses stay home. But is that a bad thing for those who do travel?

I have traveled a lot in my life and lived in a couple countries as well. I just felt it was a life experience I needed, so I did it. When I was young enough to really go all out. Staying up for more than 24 hrs and what not. The one question I got from alot of my friends and what not is "Why are you doing it/did it?" I often counter with "Why didn't you?" or "why haven't you?" because I don't understand the non desire to go out find new things and meet new people. I guess its just a personal thing obviously... The original question/poster in this thread can probably never be answered.

Haha this is spot on, I think it's cultural. In America it's not popular for people to do extended travel. In the UK or Australia for example it's very normal so lot's of people do it. Nobody will be that impressed if you tell them you've just done a round the world trip.

The costs aren't that much either, you could easily backpack for several months in a cheap destination for the average price people drop on a two week vacation.

I am also surprised that more people don't move overseas, what with the economic disaster the Western economies are facing. I'm making more money than I was doing in London, and i'm now living in Ukraine. I spend my time with beautiful young girls,hanging out in cafes/ bars, taking Russian lessons, Yoga, Boxing. I now have a maid who cooks for me, goes to the market, cleans for me. I am better off and happier than many millionaires.

It's never been so easy to make a living online, there are so many options.

-raise a family
-or travel the world


By the time most people have the financial freedom to leave their country for an extended time, they are at the age where you need to start a family (if that is the path you choose)

bottom line is you are not buying a house that has had 3 owners already. Which is what 90% of what people do.

Even when you buy from a developer, unless you are buying his first 10 units, you are losing out.


Ground Zero (dirt), foreclosures, slum houses are truly the only way to make money in real estate..and then, you have to BUST YOUR ASS to make money off of it as you said.

trust me man, I owned 4 beach condos and 2 family homes. I got rid of all of them, and did not make the Donald Trump money society leads you to believe you will make from real estate.

I don't agree with this, I think this is the mindset that you need a large amount of money to travel for six months to a year, you really don't.

In the UK a very common term is to take a gap year, this is usually before university or after university, so this is late teens or early 20's. Most people who do this don't have that much money and look to supplement their income by doing some work along their travels.

I think this is a great age to travel, you're young with no responsibilities, the only downside is after a year of this it's hard to face starting a career.

I guess what is holding people is lack of balls, lack of initiative and fear of the unknown along fear of what others around them will think of them. What most don't realize is the people who are telling them that they are crazy, lost their minds or wasting away their careers/life etc...are doing so because of envy and jealousy. You can't imagine how many people keep telling me "to stop wandering and settle down and start becoming serious, be a man." Which is always hilarious hearing those words coming from people who are miserable, at a dead end job, in an unfullfilling relationship, sinking under crushing debt, not to mention loud and irrespectful kids.

Also, lack of knowledge or straight up ignorance is rampant. A lot of people, specially in North America (Canada and the US) have this skewed and false impression that it's a wild, crazy world out there where as soon as you leave the peaceful limits of North America, you're on a war zone.

Each time I return from a long period overseas, I have the hardest time understanding the world around me and each time I go overseas, coming, I understand less and less why men are willing to sacrifice so much for so little. As mentioned, specially fear of the unknown and social pressure to do as "they" say and expect him to do. Truly a sad state. But on the other hand, a great thing for those of us who have seen the light as we don't want the world to be overrun with those too many people going to these places that are still good.

There is a huge difference between traveling around europe with a UK passport and traveling anywhere foreign from Canada/US (excluding mexico and the border states)


For starters, it is almost impossible for North American travelers to work legally while traveling. UK passport allows you to work anywhere in the EU with no problems. It's also considerably more expensive to fly anywhere international for us. Cheapest flights to europe from N.A return are going to be $600+, and easily into the thousands the farther east you go. Even flying to S. America is expensive compared to flying within the EU.

A lot of travellers under 30 years old go to NZ or Australia and get a one year working holiday visa. Americans can get this to, but very few Americans do this for whatever reason.

And while getting from the US to other places is more expensive generally than in Europe, it's amazing how many Europeans and Australians you'll find in places completely on the opposite side of the planet. A Aussie in Brazil, or Brit in Indonesia. I meet more people abroad from small European countries like Switzerland than from the US even though Switzerland has like 7.5 million people, versus 300 plus million in the US.

And it's actually pretty cheap to get to South America from the US. Much cheaper than from Europe. You can fly Spirit Air from Florida to Colombia or Peru, often for dirt cheap. And yeah, I known there a shit airline but they get you there in one piece for cheap.

I agree with the 1 year working visa in Aus/NZ (As well as most of asia) I have many friends working and living in Aus right now. But you don't accumulate money doing this, you earn enough to survive and that's about it, which doesn't really help after the year.


And it's not cheap to fly from the US to S.A, yes flights from Miami are fairly cheap, but anyone not living in the southeast need to travel across the country to take advantage. With a quick search, it's over $100 one way from LA and Boston and a little less from NY, not every expensive, but like I said earlier if you do not live in a border state you are looking at $500+ to leave the continent
