RE: question about college
Based on what you read in the book, come up with two elderly openers for each and then I'll rate them. There is no "good" opener for different environments without testing on your part.

RE: question about college
in a college type or class room setting the personal questions tend to come quick, maybe even right off the back, especially at the start of the year when everyone is trying to get to know new people. does that change the whole day game strategy? often girls will ask "whats your major" or something almost right off the bat but would that count as a personal question?

RE: question about college
I usually ask them where they got an item of clothing or accessory they're wearing. They'll respond and I follow up with "I bought one just like it for my sister when I was abroad." Most girls will bite and ask where you were travelling. Proceed to tell a DHV story/ramble from there.

A situational one that worked for me last week was student IDs. My school recently started issuing student IDs that included a photo; previously they were just a card with your name and ID # on it. A chunky girl and her cute friend were standing in front of me in line. Chunky girl had one of the new IDs on a lanyard around her neck so I asked where she got it. She was happy to explain. I said "those new ones are nice but they're still not as cool as mine" with a smirk while I showed them my old and faded ID. They both started laughing and I was able to number close the cute one shortly after without the porker cockblocking.

As an ending note, some of the openers that I initially thought wouldn't be successful have been the most fruitful for me. Try out anything that comes to mind. You'll be surprised what works.

RE: question about college
You're right to notice that asking about your major is a personal question. However, I would wait for a second one if that's the first one. It's usually a polite question college people ask just to fill space. It's also boring, like asking what your job is in the post-college world; move conversations away from it, or come up with an amplified answer ("cross-functional study in interpersonal psychology and Greek epic poetry.") I think it actually shows a lack of strong interest if that's the best she can come up with, although sometimes it means "please tell me about yourself."

Now asking if her book is interesting is usually a good one, but in the case of studying in the library, she may not give a shit about inorganic chemistry or late-classical philosophy, so trying to get her to talk about it associates you with boring academic hodgepodge.

You want to be the one guy who DOESN'T try to chat her up about her major/class/dorm, it's like asking "do you come here often?" Overplayed and not interesting.

The whole idea of the elderly opener is a combination of approaching indirectly and getting her to talk about shit she is proud of or interested in, and getting you an opening to ramble. What are college girls interested in? Hot guys, sporting events, tailgates, drinking, parties, social dominance, new experiences. Every girl who goes to college is getting a fresh start and wants to take advantage of it - be the guy who can open her world up.
