The pain of checking a low kick is better than taking it on the inner thigh. THAT SHIT HURTS!

I don't know that age, wear and tear, or anything like that was the reason. He just caught it on the right spot, at the right angle and it went. Just bad luck.

RE: Any of you guys MMA fans?
Weidman is the champion now and that's OK. His wins over Silva weren't legitimate you say? Well this is why it doesn't matter.
Vitor Belfort
Lyoto Machida
Jacare Souza
Heck I'll even throw in Chael Sonnen after his Wanderlei fight.
If Weidman beats Belfort and Souza and Machida he can lay a claim to the GOAT title. Simple as that. For my money though, the Champion of the Middleweight Division hasn't yet been crowned. With Silva's apathy, weakened chin and slowing reflexes, any of those guys would have been a tough out but Weidman happened to get there first. Belfort is my pick, Machida, however, is a monster at Middleweight.

I dont care what Weidman does in his next new fights. Its gonna be a long time until he can consider himself the GOAT. He would have to be pretty spectacular in his career to have me believe he was better then Anderson Silva in his prime.

I didn't say I agree with it but an argument can be made that Weidman dismantled the GOAT twice and after that, if he beats the top contenders, took apart the best the UFC middleweight division could ever offer. Right now the division is as dangerous as it has ever been and if Weidman takes these guys out and holds onto the title for a year or two then that argument can sway a bunch of people.

Weidman fought a good first round, but if he can beat Belfort I will give him credit.

Rumour has it that Silva threw the first fight as he had money riding on it, which I have no doubt he did after viewing the fight.

Let's be honest, no one would have watched that card if it wasn't for a rematch.

Sad to see Silva go out like that, Theisman ended his career the same way.

Jesus Christ. Silva didn't sit there and get the shit beat out of him and then get knocked out to throw a fight to win an illegal bet. This guy has Burger King and Nike advertisements that he got for being the champ. You think he's going to throw a fight?

I personally dont think that he threw the fight because he had money on it but I do think that promoters and UFC prefer he lose in order to make money on the rematch and ultimately the tie-breaking third fight. If he destroys Weidman in the first fight he banks money, but why not bank money x3?

Weidman isn't even close to being the GOAT. That talk is ridiculous. It's also ridiculous to say Silva threw the first fight. You think the second fight was a work too?

I just think that these guys are businessmen and if they have to take one step backwards to take two forwards they will do it (lose first, win rematch, force third fight).
Regardless, very unfortunate to see that happen to Silva. GOAT in my opinion and from all the time ive spent living in Brazil ive become especially biased. Watched some interviews and documentaries and Silva just seems like such a cool dude.
What's he going to do now? hes 38 and going to be recovering from that terrible break... from the interviews and documentaries ive watched it seems like he is kind of fed up with UFC/Dana White and just wants to spend more time with his family....ele tem saco cheio...

RE: Any of you guys MMA fans?
Here's the initial prognosis post-surgery for Silva...

'The Spider' is eager to return to action after his devasting injury at UFC 1

Anderson Silva remains hospitalized on Monday after surgery to repair a fractured tibia and fibula suffered during his fight at UFC 168 on Saturday while delivering a kick to opponent Chris Weidman.

Silva's surgeon, Dr. Steven Sanders of Las Vegas, detailed the nature of the injury and subsequent operation to repair the damage during a conference call held on Monday.

According to Dr. Sanders, Silva's leg was actually stabilized and realigned inside the Octagon, which may explain the tormented look the fighter had on his face as he was carried via stretcher from the cage to the MGM Grand's examination room.

From the arena, Silva was transported to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas where he was counseled and then chose to go into immediate surgery to repair the damaged leg. Dr. Sanders said the procedure took about an hour with an additional 30 minutes to close the wound and insert an 11.5 millimeter titanium rod into his tibia to help stabilize the bone and promote healing. The fibula was not set in a similar manner due to a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was that to do surgery on that bone, doctors would have had to operate directly at the site of the break and that could have caused an infection.

“When the fracture heals, the bone will achieve its original strength.”
--Dr. Steven Sanders, Anderson Silva's surgeon

Dr. Sanders explained that Silva's bones will now heal on their own while the rehabilitation involves rebuilding the soft tissue and muscle damage that occurred and will continue to happen while his bone is setting back into place. Muscle atrophy in the calf will begin almost immediately as Silva's leg remains immobile. The former middleweight champion remains on bed rest with his leg elevated while taking medication to relieve the severe pain he's suffering.

Silva is expected to make a full recovery, especially in the bones that broke from the two fractures that occurred. He will be able to start putting weight on the leg in the next few weeks once the pain subsides. The bones should not lose any kind of strength from the break, which means if Silva chooses to return to fighting he's not in danger of the same injury occurring again.

"When the fracture heals, the bone will achieve its original strength," Dr. Sanders explained. "In addition to it achieving its original strength, he'll also have a titanium rod that's 11.5 millimeters in diameter shoring up that area as well."

The titanium rod can safely stay in Silva's leg for the rest of his life, as the doctor explained the human body rarely rejects the metal when placed into a bone.

Dr. Sanders stated that a pre-surgery check of Silva's x-rays did not reveal any evidence that his leg was damaged prior to the kick that caused the break. While Silva has been a professional fighter for several years and delivered other kicks during the fight with Weidman, the doctor says that there was no proof in the scans he observed that the Brazilian fighter suffered any other fractures, breaks or stress in his leg before the break occurred.

"As an orthopedic surgeon when any injury occurs we like to know that it's from the trauma and not some unexpected or unsuspected underlying condition. So from the x-rays, when I looked at the x-rays besides obviously seeing the fracture in the bones moved apart, I look at the character of the bone to see if there was any pre-disposition to that bone why it would break," Dr. Sanders explained.

"The nature or character or quality of his bone was completely normal. There was no predisposing pathology in that bone that would have led to this particular event occurring at this time."

Silva will now begin his recovery in the hospital for a few days under his doctor's supervision until he can be cleared to return home. While there is absolutely no confirmation that Silva has come close to a decision about whether or not he'll fight again, he's constantly inquired with the doctor about getting back in the gym after his leg heals.

“I would say the fracture healing in three to six months, and attempting to train in six to nine months.”
--Dr. Steven Sanders

"He has spontaneously mentioned, obviously that's not something I'm questioning or curious about in the immediate post-operative phase, but he asked me in the pre-op area saying 'when can I train?' and he asked me every time when I see him on my rounds he asks 'will I be able to train? When can I train?' and I always indicated to him that he should be able to train," Dr. Sanders stated.

Regardless of fighting, Silva's outlook seems positive given the nature of the injury. Dr. Sanders is still hesitant to give any kind of timeline for a return for Silva, if he chooses to fight again, because the surgery was just two days ago. Silva is probably looking at about six to nine months off before he could potentially head back into the training room.

"We are not even 48 hours from the surgery and tibia fractures, though we can get them to heal, can have slower healing. So in general my prognosis would be a fracture healing somewhere in the nature of three to six months, but there's also soft tissue components that have to heal and then of course a rehabilitative process as well," Dr. Sanders explained.

"If I had to make a guess less than 48 hours from the operation, I would say the fracture healing in three to six months, and attempting to train in six to nine months."

For now the main concern for Silva is allowing his leg the proper time to heal and ensuring that he's given every opportunity to rehabilitate and recover. Dr. Sanders said that Silva is already using crutches just 48 hours removed from the surgery and he expects the former champion to make a full recovery.

"The best kind of pride is that which compels a man to do his best when no one is watching."

RE: Any of you guys MMA fans?
I am very excited to the news he may have a fairly speedy recovery and wants to get back in the ring. I'm also a little worried about what if he comes back and he is not the same fighter it could really tarnish is legacy in a lot of peoples eyes when they see him back and not the explosive exciting confident Anderson Silva they know and love/hate. I really hated seeing Chuck Liddel get knocked out 5 times at the end of his career... I'm sure for some people they don't look at him like they did before they saw him get knocked out 5 of his last 6 fights. The same thing will be true for Anderson, people will remember the last Anderson they saw not the dominate GOAT champion he was.
Maybe this whole thing will really light a fire under his ass to train even harder and really take his game to the next level. I imagine its hard to push yourself to train every day to the top of your ability when you win every fight you have easily for years and years.

RE: Any of you guys MMA fans?
If I was Anderson Silva if (and thats a big if) the injury healed correctly and didnt cause an issue I'd want to come back because I'd rather have my last fight being me getting my ass kicked and me truly knowing my time was past and I didnt belong there then have it end the way it did. Watching that fight I felt cheated because I was looking forward to seeing those two determine who the champion was, and I was just a spectator, I didnt put months or years of my life into preparing for the fight.

I am trying to understand the appeal of MMA a bit more (my brother is a big fan).

I am a big fan of boxing. But I know that the sport of boxing has mostly taken the piss out of the fans for the past 20 years.

So - I just want to ask about MMA. When the fight goes to the ground (which it regularly does). Do you find it a bit boring? And can you follow the fight easily? Since it is often difficult to tell exactly who is winning when they are rolling around on the floor.

No way Silva threw the first fight.

If you want to see a real fixed fight check out this video from the old Pride days.

How do you know he didn't throw the first fight? He was begging the guy to hit him, which he did and he didn't exactly protect himself.
This is a business and he is out to make money, especially this late in his career when he has so few fights left.
He earned $600k for the last fight, paltry to what the big name boxers can earn. Look at the revenue the UFC generates.
I normally wouldn't care about a UFC PPV, I was curious to see if Silva would destroy the guy in the rematch.
UFC is on a downward decline, all the personalities have retired and there is no one left. By that I mean fighters I would pay to see.

Well nobody knows 100%, we're all speculating here. But from watching MMA since the beginning of the UFC to now, through all types of organizations, I've seen my share of suspicious matches.

In the case of Weidman vs. Silva 1, it just doesn't seem to qualify as a work. Silva is known for those types of antics during his fights and the combo that Weidman threw was unorthodox to say the least. It's perfectly reasonable Silva got caught. Also before that fight a lot of people were calling for Weidman to win. I don't think the odds were hugely in Silva's favor, (maybe he was a 2-1 or 3-1 favorite) why fix a match for a small payout?

Silva has endorsements, fame, and is one of the best fighters of all time. He makes enough money that he doesn't have to throw a match for financial gain.

Works have mostly happened in Japanese organizations. Pancrase had a few back in the days when they still had the pro-wrestling rules (ie. rope escapes). And when it comes to working a fight, the guy who is on the losing side lets himself get caught with a submission. I can't ever think of a work where the guy was supposed to lose let himself get knocked out.

RE: Any of you guys MMA fans?
Didn't watch the fight, but Silva's leg break looked brutal as you all have said. I've trained a bit of Muay Thai and I can say that I've had my round house kicks checked and it hurts like hell, sometimes even when you're wearing shin guards. I've never experienced getting a kick checked full blast without shin guards, but I can only assume the pain would be excruciating. I did throw a round house once and I wasn't in the proper range, my foot landed on my sparring partners knee and I instantly dropped to the mat in pain.

I thought that I broke my foot, it swole up really fat and had a black, blue, and purple bruise running the entire length of my foot, I was hobbled and limping around in pain for a full week, and it took about 3.5 to fully heal. Muay Thai/MMA fighters condition their shins and apparently calcium deposits develop that hardens the bone which is why a lot of them can take the abuse and punishment. A lot of traditional martial arts style also do this with forearm conditioning as well. To be honest though, I am surprised that more guys don't break their legs that way.

As much as I enjoy MMA as a hobby and like having a bit of extra confidence that I can defend myself, I realized pretty quick that I'm simply not tough enough to delve that deep into MMA to the point where I would want to partake in cage fights, maybe that makes me a pussy, but I don't need to endure elbows and knees to the face. I ate a hard knee from the clinch once in training and I wasn't wearing a mouth guard and I am very thankful I didn't get any teeth knocked out, although I did get a very bloody and swollen lip.

Personally I think UFC is on a down slide and I fully blame Dana White, the dude is a fucking asshole and acts like he is God, and acts like he's a tough S.O.B., but in reality he's just a megalomaniac businessman.

I think Bellator is where it's at and I think Bellator will eventually rise up to overshadow and become more popular than UFC, even though UFC has better fighters and there is no disputing that. From the tournament style to the marketing, to the fact that Bellator fights are free on Spike, Bellator takes the cake IMO.

NorCal - great insight to what the training is like. I did Muay Thai training for 2 months and it was brutal. I have received a kick to my thigh and my leg went dead, the pain was not nice.

Agreed, UFC is on the decline. Although I will be watching to see that chick Rousey lose.

After Jose Aldo's solid victory over Ricardo Lamas, the plan for his next fight is move up and fight Anthony Pettis.

http://espn.go.com/mma/story/_/id/103867...ardo-lamas

Quote:Following Saturday's win, Aldo deferred any final decision to the UFC -- but made it clear he prefers Pettis next.

"I'm ready," Aldo said. "I've always been ready. Everybody wants the fight. If the fight was tonight, I'd fight him. It's up to the UFC and [president] Dana White."

Immediately after Aldo made the statement, Pettis' manager called UFC officials to inform them his fighter also wanted the bout. Pettis is currently rehabbing from knee surgery and hasn't fought since he won the belt.

"Sounds like we got a fight," White said. "Got that deal done."

Sounds like a kick-heavy match between two quick fighters. But I wonder about how well the UFC will publicize it. Aldo gets less press than Ronda Rousey's perpetual bitch face. Most people would rather watch Alistair Overeem slug it out against Frank Mir than to watch Aldo put on a clinic.

I thought the Overeem/Mir fight was more exciting then the Aldo's "clinic". Aldo had some good combinations but he was not very aggressive and never had Lamas in any real trouble. The best fight was Jamie Varner vs. Abel Trujillo.

Overeem damn near fought the perfect fight, IMO.

Aldo/Pettis is a fight I'd pay for. When Aldo opens up, it's nasty, but his gas tank is his problem. I think he's not aggressive like he used to be because he's trying to save his energy to go 5 rounds. Even with him pacing himself he still gases in the 5th round.
