Any sort of fighting when it comes to conditioning, they are in EXCELLENT shape come fight night. In terms of skill, I guess something like Golf perhaps, but really at the top level, all sports require skill.

RE: 3 Hardest Sports?
skiing has to be up there

i have friends/family members who have broken their back, destroyed their knees, shoulders while skiing. i also have realitives and friends who have gone helicopter skiing and reported about members of the group dying from avalanches when they went slightly too far off bounds.

not to mention other skiers who can come flying down the mountain out of control and really hurt or kill you. ive almost been hit by them before. of course basics like falling off a chair lift or getting hypothermia also exists.

while a sport like football might seem more violent and it is, skiing can definately fuck you up.

I don't know what defines the "hardest" sports, but the shit that goes down in this video below has got to be somewhere on that list.

I've never been rocking climbing before, but this video makes every other sport I've done in my life look like a walk in the park.

FYI: "Free Soloing" is essentially rock climbing without a rope. i.e. if you make a mistake, you die.

Just discovered this Italian sport. It only happens once a year in Florence and is a combination of brawling, football and rugby. Looks pretty tough:

I don't get it. How does he climb those walls with such huge balls weighing him down?

The fact that he is an atheist impresses me even more.

I can't think of any other sport off the top of my head where if you don't commit 100 percent, or make a mistake, you die.

Being a jockey is also tough. You have to cut weight like wrestlers, but weigh in before and after every race. They can have 8 or 9 races a day with sips of water in between each race. So they are dehydrated the whole day.

RE: 3 Hardest Sports?
American football is the hardest IMO. For a linebacker, RB, or lineman they get hit every single play. The speed in which these 240+ guys play with is frightening.
Even with pads and helmets guys careers are ending.

RE: 3 Hardest Sports?
NHL Hockey has to be up there, because the prerequisite to be the best in the world is not pure athleticism. You have to have the vision to know where that puck is going to be, and that is a gift given to far fewer than is genetic athletic superiority.

When Chris Rock said black guys would dominate at hockey if given more access to it, because of athleticism, I laughed out loud for ten minutes.

Wayne Gretzky is 5'11 and 160 lbs and was the best player in history. If you put Lebron on skates and taught him to play, Gretz would humiliate him today at 54 years old.

RE: 3 Hardest Sports?
1. Rugby Union: The fact that these guys have to pretty much continuously run for 80 minutes, and sprint 5 metre dashes all the time, is testament to their physical fitness as well as their size. The hits that get put in are crunching at times, and there are heavy restrictions on the tackling due to health and safety (heck people are dying from concussion in the last 5 years!). Pads are optional, and so are scrum-caps (the closest thing to a helmet). These things aren't hard either, just some soft foam compared to the hard protection of NFL players. The game is fast at times too, and you always have to be on your guard - not easy when fatigue is kicking in and your position starts to become compromised on the field.

That being said...

2. American Football: I don't get to watch the NFL a lot due to being in a completely different time zone, but my goodness I love the game. It's so tactical and strategic that mentally, game theory plays a big role in the first couple of plays in a down. On top of that, when the ball is snapped the game goes from 0-100mph very quickly. The tackles are huge, and it's no wonder that the players are required to wear pads due to the positions that they end up in on the floor. RB's, WR's and QB's probably get hit the hardest as the tacklers or themselves are running at a high speed at the point of collision. Didn't put it as number 1 due to the breaks between plays, as well as the long half-time. There's timeouts too, so there are a lot of breaks in play. In Rugby, there is only a 15 minute intermission between the two halves, and very little stoppage in play.

3. I'd probably say Ice Hockey: the small puck travels fast, and I find balancing on ice skates hard and a laborious task on the ankles. It is also a very difficult game and like any sport the dedication required to play is tough. I know one guy who played for the GB team at Under-14 to Under-21 level, but had to quit last year because of his commitment of studying at university.

The hardest sport to become elite level at is the sport that the most people play.

So it's soccer.

Hurling.

If you think ANYTHING comes close to it, spend a few weeks in a small Kilkenny/Tipperary/Waterford/East Cork village and see how the locals get down. No other sport comes near.

None.

Theres a reason why Conor McGregor knocked out Aldo in 13s, and probably won't be touched for a long time...The Irish have been fighting to the death against the Brits and Others for 800 years. We're experienced.

This is how we do it, since Celtic times 3000 years ago..

Nothing about the game below has changed for thousands of years.
Its been that way for rival clans/families to sort out disputes way back then, and this to this day, the same applies in the All Ireland Hurling Championship. Enjoy the last "Alpha Male" sport on Earth.

You want war? This is it.

Fenway Hurling Classic a few weeks ago in Boston..

This years All Ireland..

In no particular order, only speaking from an elite perspective

Football for the mere physical demand

Boxing for the dedication it requires

Baseball, pretty surprised no one has mentioned how mentally taxing the
game can be

Have you ever tried hitting a 98 mile an hour fastball?

RE: 3 Hardest Sports?
There was actually a survey done on this:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills

Ranking in order:

Boxing
Ice Hockey
Football
Basketball
Wrestling
Martial Arts
Tennis
Gymnastics
Baseball/Softball
Soccer

Looks about accurate to me. I haven't played too much baseball, so I don't know how strenuous that gets (seems like there's lots of downtime between a player's times at-bat, between innings, standing in the outfield, etc.) but maybe a baseball player can chime in on that.

This list doesn't include MMA, as it was made before the sport's rise in popularity, but it wouldn't surprise me to see it at or near the top. (The "Martial Arts" in the list I think refers to stuff like Olympic Judo and Taekwondo)

One more thing to add is that these sports seem to be pretty biased towards stuff that is well-known in North America. There are probably some lesser-known foreign sports that could make this list.

Hey look, one of those old threads where everyone's banned...

Well I'd say competitive swimming is rough as shit. Anything where you can't breathe should really be considered.

After the Iditarod...My list would be:
Jai alai
Swimming
Fencing

Obviously the difficulty of any of these sports pales in comparison to cheerleading Nuts
