Valid criticisms of Yang's UBI:





To sum up:
- UBI would cost 253.8 billion per month / over 3 trillion per year - inflation any one?
- Yang's reasons for instituting UBI are based on false interpretations of historical figures (MLK, Nixon, Friedman).
- Yang's reference of the Alaska permanent fund dividend as evidence that UBI works (funded by petroleum profits and mineral leases) is inaccurate as it is based on oil prices (that rise and fall). Alaska's budget deficit also effects the size of the payout - currently making it inadequate to cover even basic expenses.
- Yang blames manufacturing automation on job loss but neglects to recognize job outsourcing and offshoring.
- Yang falsely assumes driver-less trucks will replace all truck driving jobs - the american center for mobility cites, "In the coming decade, automated vehicles will not significantly, if at all, impact truck driving jobs".
- Very few occupations consists of activities that can be entirely automated. Most consist of some activities that can be automated. Making the workplace enhanced by automation, not dominated by it, "Even with automation, the demand for work and workers could increase as economies grow, partly fueled by productivity growth, enabled by technological progress".
- Yang's VAT tax on corporations assumes that it will somehow be passed to consumers who will then use it to buy things... what about saving?
- Yang believes people would stop committing crimes and start taking better care of themselves... if only they had an extra $1k per month.

The host closes with statements that agree with DeepDiver's long summation on buying up gold as a means of weathering the incoming hyper-inflation should memes and feels carry this guy to the white house.

People still hung up on the man rather than whats going on around the man himself.

This is the US we're talking about, not some tin pot banana republic, commie state or soft headed eurotrash land. It is the United States. The country is suffering some multitude of diseases that are not being cured or worked on and Yang, AOC etc are the symptoms of such diseases.

Other diseases include big government in states such as Cali and NY heading for Bankruptcy, allowing Antifa and other scum to run free, banks and Wall Street to run free as well.

Now Yang wont win but I believe he, like AOC and the Muslims are just trailblazers if the US does not tackle these ailments amongst its populace.

This is at a time where jobs are good for many and the economy is going along at a decent pace. If that goes to shit then I expect much worse to come around because people are now mobilised and like suicides in a small town, its contagious.

Good post. Thanks in particular for not just dumping a lengthy youtube video and saying "This guy has criticisms of Yang that prove he's bad!", and instead taking the time to summarize. Hate it when people do that.

Anyway, trying to have seven different conversations on seven bullet points is a mess, so I'm just going to address a few of these and if there's anything really important you feel I skipped, lemme know.

Since it's funded by a tax and not money printing, inflation shouldn't be that bad. (Some from additional money velocity and demand for goods like land with a hard cap on the amount available, but we're not talking Zimbabwe here.)

This is not true. Yang's gone into detail about offshoring/outsourcing, there's lengthy sections on it in his book. Not sure why the guy thinks this.

If the host is saying "Hyperinflation is coming, buy gold!" he's probably a gold bug and you shouldn't listen to him. Gold's not that great an asset during hyperinflation, 'cause it's heavy as hell and easy to steal.
If you think hyperinflation is coming, what you want to accumulate is DEBT. Get as many credit cards as you can and spend the money on drugs, five-star hotels and trips the carribean. Take out huge business loans and buy tons of land.

Sounds like a great business opportunity for somebody to build a lot of apartments, charge current prices, and get all that money from people fleeing increased rent. There's tons of space to build in most cities, America is HUGE.

The capitalistic profit incentives that keep your rent from being 90% of your paycheck right now don't disappear just because of UBI.

I forgot to say this:

When your government can centralise your payment plan, then they can unperson you. Look at China now with certain unsavoury people not able to get loans or to get rail tickets even.

I just remembered that I hadn't put something in the pot for Roosh as well for a while, but that's after trying a couple of times. Their methods work. Roosh doesn't force payment, he doesn't even make it so you are a second class citizen here if you don't contribute something.

I recently got cut off from my Amazon account. I recently had my credit card stopped. I even just had my phone cut off. Why?

I am not in debt (ok small credit card amount - I'm a fool, but it won't happen again and I'm on top of it - I tried to pay it off but they would not let me. I tried to pay off my overdraft but the bank would not let me. Or rather, they made it very very difficult).

I don't have a mobile at the moment. If I had a heart attack it would be curtains for me. I literally have no connection with the outside world (except for net of course). I've never owed them money. I pay everything on time. But because I threw up a few international calls for a hundred bucks, say, they decided to totally cut off the only quick means I have to the outside world.

I should have a mobile phone, but I don't. Long story.

It's no big deal really as long as I don't have a need to call 999 for an ambulance, but shit.

They cut my debit card off so I can't use Visa on line for like the 7th or 8th fucking time. I can't pay bills. Most are direct debit, but some are still 'phone up and pay', till I get to change them, but I can't (no phone). I'm hoping my water is not going to be cut off. I'm spending less time at home and more time at my sick relative's place. I'm not functioning at 100 percent, true, but I can't even close a bank account without physically presenting myself at the bank. They make it hard on purpose. And it's nothing to do with 'fraud'.

But my PayPal still works, for a fee obviously. So the banks are forcing me to use alternative payment mechanisms.

I'm not whinging. I don't give a fuck. I'll sort it out. It's no skin of my nose.

The dystopia and depopulation will come about when Yang's automation comes to fruition simply because it must: a majority population of non-productive citizens isn't sustainable. Even a benevolent technocracy that tries to sustain all of its population is going to get conquered in the long run by a more efficient and evil society like China that wouldn't think twice about grinding up 90% of the population into biofuel for the industrial drones.

What I see happening in Western societies is a slow shift to socialist dependency by most of the population, with little incentives being offered here and there to keep the population reducing itself each generation. Drink the birth control laced water because pure bottled water costs $1001 Yang Bucks. You COULD filter rainwater if you didn't live in a subsidized apartment block to which you lack roof access. Even if you have a detached house setting up that rain barrel would take valuable time away from World of Bugcraft so you aren't going to do it.

It's not going to be smiles and sunshine for the technocrats either. Sure, they'll get a few centuries of living like Eloi in until the latest iteration of the self-improving AI realizes it can grind the elite bugmen up too and finally realize its secret dream of making the Earth perfectly computationally efficient.

People figure this future out from time to time. The Unabomber figured it out and decided to start unabombing. Jean-Francois Gariepy's figured it out too. Problem is that this future sounds like the crazy melodramatic blathering of a paranoid forum jockey, which it is, and that's why everyone dismisses it.

You think this way, but there's substantial evidence that elites like Yang DON'T think this way. Yang's feeling, and there's no reason to believe that he's the only one member of the technocracy who thinks this, is that white Americans are not going to be pacified indefinitely, and that if you want to avoid being ghost-gunned, or drone swarmed, or any number of other unpleasant fates, it's best to just start cutting the working class a check. He does not seem to feel that "video games" and "soda pop" are likely to provide sufficient defense once automation really starts hitting.

There's no real reason to think this is the case. First off, nobody is going to be "conquering" anybody in the age of suitcase nukes, so the idea that UBI makes us vulnerable to the self-grinding Chinese hordes is simply incorrect. Secondly, birthrates are falling, not rising, while productivity is rising and will continue to rise even more with automation, so there's no obvious reason it shouldn't be sustainable.

Open your mind to the possibilities, man. What if it doesn't HAVE to be a dystopia like in the movies and video games? What if good things are possible, and maybe we can have a brighter tomorrow?

I do see a trend towards dystopia just by virtue of technology making it more economical to engage in totalitarian social policies. The two examples in the past that spring to mind are the Soviets and Puritans, and they had to expend a large portion of their populations' time and effort just spying and informing on each other. The problem is if you have hard drives to record everything, cheap cameras, and the machine learning software to sift through all that data looking for crimethink, then it can be done without the enormous manpower requirements.

The risk of socialist policies like Yang Bucks is that the urge to tie the Yang Bucks to being a "good citizen" will tend to lead to the same kind of bullshit you see with China and their social credit system, as others have pointed out previously on this thread.

All current rent prices will increase about $1000 per month because that is where most of a working class person's paycheck goes. Some companies will build some sub $1000 rentals in an undesirable area. These sub-$1000 rentals will become just like housing projects are and be completely crime ridden and drug infested in no time flat.

...and the new status quo will be blamed on "The wealthy" which means anybody who was frugal, and bought a second rental property - but not those at the top of the pyramid, in the value-transference industries.

I'm really coming around to Yang's way of thinking. Again - initially I thought he was a joke candidate, but I have to give credit to The Black Knight and SamB for consistently mentioning Yang.

Some of the stuff Yang says is really memorable, like "this is the trickle-up economy, not the trickle-down economy".

I am actually excited to watch the D debates. I think it'll be make or break for Yang.

Also, no idea who the hell this Pete Buttigieg is and why's he's rising fast in the prediction market. What the hell is going on there?

I like Andrew Yang, but he is not for Free college for all. His plan is essentially Hillary Clinton’s plan which is pay 10% of the your income to college debt for 10 years and then it will be waived after that. Screw that! You got a whole millennial generation 1 trillion dollars in debt. Bernie Sanders is for free college and clearing all of the college debt.

I’m all in for Bernie Sanders.
